  • Using butterfly enclosures to raise butterflies is a great educating moment for kids and adults alike, and a very fascinating and beautiful opportunity. But did you know that you should clean your butterfly enclosure after every use? Here robin shows us how to accomplish this and prevent disease, bacteria, OE spores and more from spreading from one to another.

Thank you so much!! Was just the vid I was looking for! A lot more people need to understand that OE transmittes between monarchs and there are other diseases for other butterflies 🐛🐛🐛

Does it have to be bleach? I can't use bleach because I have asthma. Are there any other safe and also non-bleaching alternatives?

You can use hydrogen peroxide instead, or even vinegar. 1 cup peroxide to 2 cups distilled water.

What if there is no sun? I just bleached two of my enclosures but there is no sun expected for a few days

They should be fine as long as they are still in a dry area. Double check for any mildew or mold in creased areas. If you find any, you may have to try again on a sunny day.
