Rin was a symbol of purity and hope , something Obito though could only exist in a dream world, and something that needed to be preserved at all cost. When Rin died In his hands , she became an imposter in that dream , snapping him out of it. He then finally understood Madaras "Wake up to reality" speech , how twisted and corrupted the Shinobi world was, stuck in a state of perpetual, never ending hatred. A world where every single person inevitably loses their own Rin. She wasn't the reason he wanted to put the world in a dream , she was just the trigger.
