Nice work Alex. I used to work in a transmission shop and remember that we used to put extra fluid in the older Taurus's too, otherwise, they would slip in the middle of a corner from all the fluid sloshing to one side of the pan.

I used that exact same pump yesterday to fill a differential in a 2006 F150. I was helping my grandfather with some maintenance and that pump exploded all over his back. He still smells like that fluid, terrible but it was hilarious.
Absolutely love the 1 min explanation of direct injection, and also my 2013 5.0 Mustang has a stock 0-60 of 4.3 seconds so you’re easily just as fast as a gen 1 5.0 out of the box
You realize that the one you removed is a junk yard part ( painted numbers on the PTU). So it's already been replaced now you just have to hope the cheap one lasts as long as the used one.

34:49 Alex says "7251" when writing the part number on the PTU case, but actually writes "7551", lol. I wonder if that's going to screw up a future owner or their mechanic years from now 😆
Alex my guy! We come from very similar backgrounds. During night trade school, started as a lube tech at Ford, worked my way up to heavy line, dipped for MB of Loveland CO, master certified and changed careers flyin planes internationally. Sitting at a hotel watchin you dig into the show and me just chuckling over all the things I've repaired 100 times. You got it figured out my man! I could slam a PTU in 2.5 hrs 😂. Don't miss flat rate AT ALL. Especially under warranty. Anywho, leaking/ lack of gear oil, then burned bearings were 100% the cause of all ptu failures. Had many that welded the bearings to the races.
I have a 2013 FPIS 3.5 EcoBoost, Essentially a SHO. Had to replace my PTU a couple weeks ago. I got a used one from a local auto recycler aka junk yard for around $250-$300, it only had 18,000 miles on it. I pulled the drain plug out to drain any residual oil out of it and the oil was pretty clean. So it in went. Works great, no problems with it yet.
I love the fact that the SHO seats are heated and cooled. A pleasant surprise one day was that the seats in the front both have massagers in them for the lower back and lower seat. My PTU is still doing well despite being a 2010 with over 204k miles. I love seeing the mods you've been installing on your Taurus SHO. Have a great Memorial day weekend! 😎
That appeared to be the same PTU I installed in my friends 2015 explorer that he uses as a work truck, AWD 3.5 turbo so I looked it up and it’s the same part. He bought it salvaged and I fixed it, had about 100k at the time. It was wrecked but just body damage. The original PTU failed soon after he started driving. No surprise to me, he uses it for work and drives a lot, well over 50k a year. He also doesn’t check fluids and goes thru vehicles often. In any case, he paid $500 for the jdmspeed PTU. I did put Amsoil fluid in the PTU as I knew they weren’t the best, but they’re not the worst either. It’s been two years and that PTU is still quiet. That explorer is ran wide open daily, goes off road often. It’s been a good car. It has nearly 250k on the original engine and transmission. tldr: I’m surprised at how durable this eco boost explorer has been and the jdmspeed PTU is still quiet with over 100k on it and the same Amsoil I put in it when installed. I’ve told him to change the fluids, but he doesn’t listen.
@WRBWRXWGN I made up a similar excuse years ago, when I first bought an air hammer. Compared hand hammering rate, vs air hammering rate. Totally worked 🤣
When you’re using the piston press to push the brake piston into the caliper, I usually put a brake pad between the tool and the piston so I know the pressure is being applied to the pistons evenly.
Alex they also have a cooled version of the pto and you can add the cooler lines and external cooler and pump or tie into the original cooling system. All bolt on.
I love to release all over the garage too. Makes me feel so good when I'm releasing it. I love the pump, you pump it and then releases with euphoria into the tightest of space 🚀
Alex, from someone who lives in the Philippines 🇵🇭 and a gearhead everything I do and get for my cars and motorcycle comes from China. In my experience China has gotten a lot better with their machine parts. I look forward to your videos every week, I am from Northern Illinois and living here you're videos give me a touch of home, keep it up dude and thanks for a great video 😂😊
My normal shop attire includes shorts and sandals. Broken toes are very possible from falling parts (guess how I know that), yet I still wear sandals. My broken German cars are also my favorite cars. Almost took this episode personally 😉
Well done, messieur! I have two SHO's: one PP and one non PP. Both with tunes on them. Latest upgrade is PU bushings on the subframes FR and REAR and PU bushings for the FR and REAR sway bars. Makes it track and drive way more precisely at speed. No increase in vibes.
Look at the g meter graph on the draggy to see if it’s shifting into third before 60. If you a slight plateau or dip, it obviously is. You make a great start to my Saturday mornings. 👍🏼
My experience with PTUs (Fleet services ten years ago) They fail for two reasons primarily, assymetric tire sizes, which you wouldnt think same size same brand can do that, but its as easy as fresh set on the front/rear and 50% on the other axle. That causes lash bias where the worn axle set is ALWAYS under trailing stress which creates alot of heat, breaks the fluid down and it either breaks the seals down and starts leaking until its out of fluid and fails OR it retains the fluid and wears all the components until the gearset is so sharp its like razors. Then teeth break off and destroy everything. Second reason, loss of fluid, almost always related to the first. Moral here, dont mix and match your tires on edges, explorers or tauruses. Now that said, I've seen police explorers with 240k miles, factory PTU.
Legit the best automotive channels there is, always informative and a great diversity of cars, honestly, it gets boring seeing nothing but broken supercars, but learning more about these types of cars etc is refreshing!
I would have loved to see you take apart both PTUs and compare the internals before installing the new one. Also the call-out to other UA-camrs clothing was classic.
There was a guy on NASIOC that used to buy cheap ebay turbos and diffs and would take them apart and fix all the QC issues before using, they'd be just as good as stock
I worked at a Land Rover-Jaguar-BMW-Merc dealership and one Land Rover Technician wore shorts EVERY day! Even some days in the winter up in Upstate NY. He was hilarious. I loved all the Techs I worked with at that dealership!

I like that mechanics write all kinds of stuff in sharpie on work they do. The wife thinks I'm crazy putting sharpie notes on everything these days (like purchase dates, install dates, etc) even on paint cans, electronics, inside of house repairs, appliances, etc.
Alex, my PTU failed on my Edge around 60K. I replaced with a cheap online unit. I installed a drain plug and change fluid once a year. I now have 150K and absolutely no issues.
Fix Or Repair Daily That car looks like so much fun as a daily driver. Alex is right. The quality and reliability of a brand like Ford can vary quite a bit depending on the model/year.
Not a job for most shade tree mechanics either, timing this engine is a pain, specialty tools are required, and with the tranverse engine position you basically have to pull the motor. Source: my 2016 sho modded just about exactly like this
When replacing pads and rotors easiest way I use to compress a caliper piston is with a flat screw driver. Before removing the caliper stick the screwdriver between the pad and rotor and simply pry pushing the piston back in. Makes a brake job really easy and faster.
You are correct about the reliability. I happen to be a Ford guy, but this Flex (Taurus SHO wagon essentially) is the third most unreliable car I've ever worked on. That's pretty bad because I've worked on a 1989 V12 XJS, which might be the most unreliable car ever made. I've replaced the turbos once, the whole engine once, the transmission once, the torque converter 4(!) times, the CV axles on both sides, the intermediate shaft, the trans cooler/AC condenser coil, it completely destroys even expensive high wear rating tires in less than 30k miles, and tires are *really* expensive because it's on 20s, the brake sponginess thing has literally plagued this thing since the beginning of my ownership, and everything in the braking system has been changed at least once except the ABS module (it does stop pretty well for such a heavy car though), wheel bearings all around, it eats a set of pads every 20-30k miles, the right rear caliper failed and froze up twice now, I replaced the front seat which had a rip, the center console lid broke off. the heater control/entertainment screen thingy failed twice, I've replaced the blend door actuators multiple times and I've just given up on them because the AC and heat still work with the click-click-click, the rear evaporator core sprung a leak, I'm sure I'm forgetting some things. Yeah. It's a big old pile of dung this car, but when it's working right, it's a blast. Accelerates quick, stops well, handles surprisingly well for a 5k lb SUV, it's comfortable, gets okay highway mileage compared to a proper rear drive body on frame SUV. FML though. I didn't buy what I wanted, a BMW, because I wanted something reliable. Nope.
Goood morning Alex and team!! Was waiting for the Saturday morning video before I go and detail my E55 and my friends 89 Mustang GT Convertible that he's getting ready to put up forsale. 32k miles on that one. Then we have to do his 89 Trans Am GTA with 2,600 miles it! Also for sale. All 3 are getting buffed & coated with Avalon King and LSC clay mitted. Got my W211 shirt on, so they'll turn out perfect! Lol Thanks again for the great videos and motivation and also for the products & links!!! Release is in the mail, but seeing that I live in Wisconsin, it should be here quickly! 😆
Alex, to prime the HPFP you hold the accelerator pedal to the floor for 10 seconds while cranking. It disables spark but allows you to prime the hpfp without having to crack the lines. It's the same on the mazdaspeed platform and i have a speed 3 2nd gen or known here in Australia as a mazda 3 MPS
Alex I have a 2017 Fusion Sport AWD Twin Turbo! The motor has been highly modified Turbos are Garrett’s I change the PTU every 15,000 miles because it doesn’t hold that much fluid. No problem’s over 130,000 on it.
Been hoping to get a SHO one day, strange but it's probably my dream car honestly. Good to see a lot of the attention points on it and see the innards in ways I haven't before! Awesome video.
I can picture the confused expressions when you said that. "LSC???" I never thought of talking about hypothetical dangerous cults. Hypothetically, of course. That would be an interesting experiment. Usually, I'm just nice to them, especially if it's a teenager. (I feel badly for them, having grown up in it without much choice) Instead of going door to door, they could... I don't know... Make friends with neighbors and actually form relationships? I suspect that's frowned upon, though, since neighbors are "of the world" and, therefore, a bad influence. The one thing I have little patience for is thinly veiled condescension and judgment, though. "We know better than you."
Gotta agree with them being a maintenance nightmare... Wife has had hers getting close to 180K and we replaced the steering rack with a FoMoCo one and it went out 2 weeks later. Quality cars are a thing of the past.
Oh, regarding DI, I have an M276 motor in the 2013 C300 4Matic Sport. When I needed the shop to replace a leaky cam position sensor which I could get to without removing the intake manifold and I had no gaskets at the time, they peeked inside the intake ports and discovered that at 123k miles, the M276 (with original injectors, etc.) was not "carboned-up". Good to know. I guess my regular oil changes at 5k miles with Liqui Moly and using Shell 93 octane fuel most of the time really helps out. I have also begun to use the Liqui Moly DI fuel additive as well. Great mileage and power... 36mpg at 75mph and it seems more powerful than 247hp. Also, the 4Matic transfer box is in great shape, as I had the shop change its oil at about 65k miles after I bought the car. The fluid out of it was okay, as well. So, I guess there is a huge difference between M-B and Ford. 🙂 Keep up the great work, Alex/Mark.
I know that flat rate experience. Started flat rate in 2008; the worst time. There were no pay guarantees, either. Rent was due, student loans, everyday bills, etc. So glad I left that (after 11 years) and now working for a logistics company working on their vehicles and equipment for a ridiculous hourly wage. It did get me a house, some cars, and I own all my tools, but flat rate is like the Unions, needs to be done with.
I had a Flex with the police package and the PTU had a drain and a fill plug. I changed the fluid every other oil change and it lasted 160k miles with no problems. I don’t have the car anymore, but it’s still running around with more than 200k miles on it.
Fitbit advice, as someone who has owned 4 generations of Fitbit, but this would be smart watch advice in general, you should disable auto wakeup, so that everytime you rotate your wrist it doesn't just turn on.. you'll get a lot more battery life this way, a double-tap manual wake is the way to go imo.
I for one appreciate your honest assessment of the Taurus SHO. I was tempted to look into buying one but not with the list of possible issues you have mentioned since I would be at the mercy of the Ford Dealership for repairs. As Always, May God Bless you and yours! 😇
Man I was a Honda tech for a few years and yes sirrr them days were horrible in terms of only having 12 hours for the week on Thursday because I keep getting warranty jobs. I had to get out of it and now an Appeals Analyst for a major insurance company. Stress free!!!
23:26 There was a TSB for the PTU regarding a vent valve that would clog and/or allow water in the unit. They solved it by extending the valve off of the unit with a tube and mounting it with a zip tie higher up.
Yep I was a flat rate tech at a Nissan dealership and had that same dream. The shop foreman would take all the quick service work and give you the squeak and rattle warranty work. I barely made any money some weeks. So I quit and decided I just wanted to work on my own cars, and went into a different field to make money best decision ever. I went to Lincoln tech in Alsip IL for auto tech I should have stayed in the extra 6 months for diesel certification, and got a job working on semi trucks that's where the money is.
I remember the SHO 30 years ago...and it was a cool car then. Its to bad that its plagued with so many issues but I cant blame you at all for wanting one because it really is a nice comfy car that....Really can go!.
Hey Alex you can use osfo to clean up your stainless exhaust pipes pretty well! Then I would rinse and coat with wd40 and let heat and keeps your exhaust looking good!
Going to be following along... I myself have a Michigan own Sho. with 250K on it and hardly no rust. I recently replaced both turbos and added the SCT Tuner with a A0 tune from gearheads. PTU seems to be solid so far, however I discovered a slight small, tiny trans leak developing at the bottom of the trans, looks like it's from the gasket where its split down the middle. I could use some advice on how getting it all apart because I'll most likely be doing it all my self :)
Detroit Axle is perfectly fine. I've never gotten a bad part from them and all 4 of the wheel bearings on my Impala have over 45,000 miles on them so far and still ride like new. I'd DA over most of the stuff sold at the Auto Parts store. At least I'm confident I'll get the right part.
Would love to own my own SHO as I’m a big Ford Fan most of my life but everyone should at some point in their lives own a Corvette, just because it’s the most Iconic vehicle ever made and it symbolizes the American Car Culture.
Watched a recent VINWIKI video with some youngish guys doing a NY to LA Cannonball run on a budget ! They bought the SHO for $6000 if I recall, with 100,000 miles on it. With a bigger gas tank, and bugger all else done to it (apart from cop rims), they did the crossing with 3 stops, in under 32 hours !!
I have the original factory PTU in my Flex and we just clicked over to 215k miles on it. It's been modded for about the last 90k and some of that is cross country towing. My guess about why they're failing is people removing the underbelly shield (or tearing it off and not repairing it) and not changing the fluid. This shield is a crucial piece with ducting for cooling both the PTU and the rear turbo. You'd think it would stay pretty cool when open to the air, but not so much. Anyway, the trick is to drop the oil and change it every 20-30k miles with high quality 75w-140 synthetic gear oil. If you track it, you may want to do it every oil change. My car is proof that they're strong and that they can last longer than the intended life of the car.
2002 w210 E 55 AMG 4.8 SEC 0 TO 60. NONE N/A LOVE them. The only difference is Ford 3.5 ecoboost be easier to tune it n get more power with bolt on parts. Good luck to everyone. God bless us all.
I’m so happy you are making this content! I just tuned mine as well. The transmission is so much better now. I’m hoping you do a brake deal. I know there are calipers that will fit it, but I feel no one knows about it. Great vid my man.
PROPS for actually taking the time to explain things to your inquisitive son!! My sons were that way all through childhood, and I (a lifer design engineer) always tried to take time to explain things to them... even at a very young age. One graduated from MIT a couple years ago with a Masters in Electronic Engineering, the other is making superb grades as a Sophomore at Brown University in Aerospace Mechanical Engineering... both on scholarships they earned. Parents... don't ever tell your child "you wouldn't understand"...!!... that's a LAME way to treat an inquisitive mind! Instead, respond to their curiosity with good explanations... IT'S THEIR FUTURE YOU'RE BUILDING! Your taking time to explain to them may spark something in their mind and spirit... it may plant a seed of something that sets their direction for the rest of their life!
I 100percent agree that some cars are better and more reliable than others that is just facts but I'm a massive believer that no matter what car you have if you look after it treat it correctly with proper regular maintenance and services that car will be relatively reliable
PTU looks like everything is fine other than bearings. If you pull some numbers on the bearings you can easily replace them with Timken, FAG industries, or Nachi brand versions. Rebuild it with the better bearings and seals, and likely add on some kind of remote expansion chamber to keep expanding oil/gases from blowing the seals out, you’d likely solve the underlying issues.
I put JDMSpeed Coilovers in one of my VW’s. They were super super cheap but they have held up great for over a year now. They’re not as good as my name brand on my other VW. But you can barely tell the difference in ride quality. And I driver on crappy roads. So I think you will have good luck with the JDMSpeed PTU

Yesssssss this is the video I needed. I’m having leaking PTU issues on my 2018 Ford Explorer Police Interceptor(basically an SUV SHO) and this answered all my questions! Thank you so much Alex 🥂
Considering how legendary the Panther platform interceptors were for reliability and robustness, this sub-par engineering seems embarrassing in a police vehicle. I'll bet it's a blast to drive, though.

LMFAO! "Ford PTU, meet Chinese PTU. Are you guys exactly the same? Man I hope so." Classic.
part numbers are off thats how you can tell the chinese one apart
The excuse that you're upgrading the car "to get to work faster so I can make you more money?" is genius. I can't wait to try that one. 😂
Don't forget thought that you're trying to make more money "FOR HER" LOL.
@WRBWRXWGN
I made up a similar excuse years ago, when I first bought an air hammer. Compared hand hammering rate, vs air hammering rate.
Totally worked 🤣
i tried that on my wife, she pointed out that i work from home, so i am back to square one.
The performance pack/interceptor both had that as well. It can be added to any of the puts.
I love to release all over the garage too. Makes me feel so good when I'm releasing it. I love the pump, you pump it and then releases with euphoria into the tightest of space 🚀
Alex is a good guy. There was so much potential for Innuendo in this episode, and he skipped right over all of it with a straight face.
@@Dwigt_Rortugal i'm sure the sponsor wouldn't appreciate that 😂 say goodbye to your brand deal
thank u for doing this. no one really does vids like these for SHOs
😆 40:39 @Tavarish, @Samcrac & @RichRebuilds catchin' strays for their attire!

@@ryandoyle4344 Alex is friends with them
He forgot Sleeperdude.😂😂 but yeah they are! 😂😂😂😂
My normal shop attire includes shorts and sandals. Broken toes are very possible from falling parts (guess how I know that), yet I still wear sandals. My broken German cars are also my favorite cars. Almost took this episode personally 😉
It seemed like a hard hat area under that PTU
“Pre ignition and knock/detonation are different things” I knew I liked you.
LSPI is what really hurts DI motors.
@@StrongmanTaylor well to be fair, they both can. LSPI is just more immediately fatal.
@@JordieG8 it is the dirty little secret in the DI world.
What else should l do to the SHO? Should I leave it alone now?
3D print a badge to put before the SHO badge that reads "FO".
90s kids will get it.
Big spooly boi 😅 , maybe even some twinzies, some NOS , maybe some meth (bad for ppl great for iat's 😅) and a 6 speed manual , and that would be a good little start lol
Go get a built motor and look into a Honda AWD trans swap with a billet transfer case lol. The other guy with the world record SHO car got a bullet adapter for his car to use a Honda trans
Bigger turbo for sure
@@02honeydewbro I was litterally right b4 he pulled the t case and your comment pop up , I was like no shit if this is the same gear drive like Honda, and bam sure enuf look exactly like a Hondas.. minus that big ugly usless ptu ... I like that mechanics write all kinds of stuff in sharpie on work they do. The wife thinks I'm crazy putting sharpie notes on everything these days (like purchase dates, install dates, etc) even on paint cans, electronics, inside of house repairs, appliances, etc.
This Ford is such a Sleeper :) Who else does think so?
As in boring I agree……
Some things just can’t overcome their looks, no matter how fast 😂
Yeah if you fix all the 💩 Alex fixed! 🙏
Agreed. One of the beauties that are great. Get a Lincoln platform and have some more luxury to boot!
It’s a great sleeper but man it sounds like a pain to deal with due to the PTU and water pump.
Alex, my PTU failed on my Edge around 60K. I replaced with a cheap online unit. I installed a drain plug and change fluid once a year. I now have 150K and absolutely no issues.
"More servicing . Thats what your ford needs" . .🤣🤣👍 thats so funny . . Gold 🍻❤
Fix Or Repair Daily
That car looks like so much fun as a daily driver. Alex is right. The quality and reliability of a brand like Ford can vary quite a bit depending on the model/year.
Also, I don’t want you to forget the fact that many of us want you to do a series on your father in law’s car!!! He deserves it!!!!
Please replace the water pump, it would be great to see the logic of its placement, another great episode Alex
It was replaced by the previous owner
Not a job for most shade tree mechanics either, timing this engine is a pain, specialty tools are required, and with the tranverse engine position you basically have to pull the motor. Source: my 2016 sho modded just about exactly like this
@@716monk thanks for the replay, I appreciate you giving me a better understanding of its difficulty
Nope.
I really enjoyed Kamala-Alex explaining what a center support bracket is with such precise detail! Kudos.
Lol
Thanks again for the great videos and motivation and also for the products & links!!!
Should have written FauxMoCo
Better than ZXCFY, SereneLife, or MANUSAGE brand. 😆

Jehovah's witnesses just woke me up. I told them LSC is my savior.
YMMD Dude!!!!
Another clue if they return: Tell'em U once was part of this highly dangerous cult!
U'll see them running from U fast....
I'm disfellowshipped and don't understand the purpose of Jehovah's witness comment
Gotta agree with them being a maintenance nightmare... Wife has had hers getting close to 180K and we replaced the steering rack with a FoMoCo one and it went out 2 weeks later. Quality cars are a thing of the past.
Ecoboost Saturday!
I love Ecoboost Saturdays!
As an owner of a 2013 Lincoln MKS Ecoboost, most of this info is GREATLY appreciated.
Nice new shirt! I’m glad you got your name on it, as it must be hard to remember the names of all 2 employees in the shop! 😂😂
Keep up the great work, Alex/Mark.
You should rebuild the old PTU, seals and bearings, and keep it for replacement if the chinesium PTU fails.
I was thinking the same thing. "I wonder how much quality bearings go for?" It doesn't look difficult to rebuild, but what do I know?
Rebuild is best option ngl
30:25 haha that storm just hit me in Cincinnati Ohio while watching this. Once again the best video on UA-cam this week. Good Job Alex.
I've been using detroit Axel since before they moved on 8 mile... Never had a problem with anything I've gotten from them.
I put that upgraded PTU with heat shield in my MKS A LINCOLN badged Taurus and other than a seal issue I fixed it's worked flawlessly last 20k miles
Alex you are going down the rabbit hole with this 0-62
Keep it simple
Keep it clean
This is after all dad's ride.
Sleeper to the core
Would love to own my own SHO as I’m a big Ford Fan most of my life but everyone should at some point in their lives own a Corvette, just because it’s the most Iconic vehicle ever made and it symbolizes the American Car Culture.
for the rear brake cable you can just take the screws out of the spring and hook assembly and knock it off it makes taking the cable off much easier
The PTUs are trash. You just got a Tuesday or Wednesday PTU
When you said a lot of fans can't be real. I felt that. I'm a long life BMW lifer, even I can admit they are not all sunshine and rainbows.
50:23 Max! That was awesome! I had to rewind and watch it twice!
Use loctite to clean up & polish an metals. Rims, exhaust tips ECT anything. Works awesome sauce.
40:18 Which is why we love your vids! You speak the truth and let the chips fall. 👍
Love the LSC uniform shirt 🔥🔥🔥
i like drilled and slotted disc rotors ! = looking great and working xtra well ! = subaru STI 2007 model = 0 - 60 = 4.5 and so your old engine is rather good - nice show Alex and thank you .
Michigan guy here, I think once you get west of Kalamazoo (closer to Indiana) I think they use sand or a brine solution.
I drive an 18 wheeler and I can’t recall ever seeing them use salt like they do in Detroit and surrounding areas.
Alex, you should be checking out the Flex ecoboost, great family hauler.
I live in Michigan and yes we use way to much road salt, I hate it every time we get a flurry they salt. Thanks for the great content !
Ordered my Avalon king Today...hope it rocks like you say it does
The A/C Cobra 427 was considered a fast car with a 0/60 of 4.2 back in the day .. now you have a $6,000 family saloon with the same time - Wow. Great video Alex and nice to see each step concluded in a single video. PS the shirt looks good. 👍
I use brake rotors for weights. Their different sizes allow them to fit inside each other and save span on the bar.
