The wires I have oming into my present three way switch has pnly 4 wires, red, black, green, and red. There is no corresponding traveler wire (brown wire). What do I need to do with this configuration? I am trying to install the same switch as you.

How is your Amazon Basics Smart Switch working? Great demo!

I installed amazon basics 3-way dimmer and it results in the light staying on continuously.
The dimmer is on the load side. I followed the wiring diagram in the fold out instructions. This means that one of the traveler wires ends up not being used. The dimmer indicator lights function. Tried factory reset. no luck. I tried attaching the dimmer line wire to the unused traveler. Now the lights can be turned off from the dumb switch but the dimmer still does not control the lights other than by keeping them on whenever the traveler is energized.

My issue with these smart switches, they’re so large in the back. Hard to fit flush against the wall. You didn’t show how you were able to get it flush. Maybe I have to remove all switches to tuck wires to create space. 🤔 …I wish they could make a slim design smart switch.

Great video! Question: I installed it just like you did, but my issue is when I turn off my “dumb” switch, my smart switch is no longer able to power the lights back on. I need to always leave the dumb switch in the on position. Any suggestions?

I had the exact same problem. I switch around the traveler and load wires but had no luck. I tried switching the smart and dumb switch and neither switch would work. If you find a solution, I would be interested to hear it.

@@AdamJohnsonFamily I’ve been doing a bit of research, and it seems the Amazon switch needs to be connected on the LOAD side, not the LINE side. What they don’t tell you is that the switch needs to be always powered on, which is not typical for a 3-way. What I’ve read is that you need to use one of the traveler wires to jump power from the common on the dumb switch. Then connect the other side to the LINE wire in your smart switch. So that gives it constant power, along with being connected to the neutral. Then the smart switch should be able to determine current level through the single traveler wire.
I haven’t tried this yet, but will tonight when I’m home. Hopefully it works!

      @@AdamJohnsonFamily confirmed this worked :)
      1. Set the smart switch on the load side
      2. Use one of travelers from the dumb switch as a jumper from the common line. Connect the other end to the LINE side of your smart switch. This will give you constant power that’s needed to run the smart switch.
      3. Connect all the remaining wires as needed
This should work! The smart switch only uses one traveler to determine voltage:

Sometimes the dumb switch doesn’t work. As in I keep flipping it and do NOT touch the smart switch or the app. I can stand there and turn the dumb switch on and off 3 times and it works, but the 4th it doesn’t. Have to flip a bunch more times for it to work again. Strange. I have 2 of these switches side by side controlling 2 different sets of lights (and on the other wall have 2 dumb switches, each one connected to a different smart switch)

I am so mad right now I paid $45 for smart switches and this one is only $18. I am a huge leviton fan, however half the price you just can’t argue with and it’s all the same tech underneath the hood.

I have black, red, and ground.
It says neutral required but is there a workaround if I don't have a neutral?

    • @justadadtips
      @justadadtips  2 роки тому

Not that I know of, you need the neutral for the switch to work.

not quite sure if you yourself understood what you're doing...on a 3 way switch, your line and your load aren't on the same switch, one switch contains the line and one contains the load

I have a weird issue, my smartswitches are powered properly when in both positions (the nightlight yellow indicates when other switch is off and I can dim when it's on.) I can also turn off the lights fine with both switches. However when the smart switch is off the other switch cannot turn the lights on because the smart switch turns out all back off with its dimming animation.
