  • Applications for Ralston College's MA in the Humanities for 2023 are now open. Dr. Peterson does not teach at Ralston. www.ralston.ac/humanities-ma
    Ralston College presents the inaugural lecture of its Chancellor, Dr Jordan B Peterson, delivered at one of the most iconic sites of the ancient world, the Library of Celsus in Ephesus. This ancient city was the birthplace of Heraclitus, the philosopher who first articulated the idea of the Logos, and the final resting place of St. John, who uses that same Greek word to name the Divine Word. In his lecture, Dr Peterson argues that the intelligibility of the world depends on the patterned regularities that are superordinate to our immediate perception; this underlying order - which, from the Greeks onward, we have called Logos - is both the horizon that enables human perception and the basis for the possibilities that we realize in the world. Such an account of our intrinsic, rational, and self-determining capacity constitutes a challenge to the assumptions of many prevailing schools of thought - such as behaviorism, rigid empiricism, and postmodernism - and lays the burden of personal ethics, and the formation of a good society, squarely on the shoulders of the individual.
    Dr Peterson's extensive catalog is available now on DailyWire+: utm.io/ueSFn

    Honestly, I don't know how anyone could formulate essential concepts of our civilization with such grace that anyone can understand. It's not even praise at this point, it's mere shock.

      As someone from outside the West I used to be cynical about Western civilization. Thankfully my English is OK enough to listen to JBP.
      Im now in awe of how you the West have individual sovereignty as a foundation of your society (although imperfectly practiced its still damn cool).

    • @Rafael_Fuchs
      @Rafael_Fuchs Рік тому

      @@MasayaShidaA lot of western philosophy is based on the individual experience and how society impacts us. The meaning of society shifts when the individual good is placed above the greater good. In full swing, it can be idealistic as everyone is important and aware of eachother's individual wellbeing. It can also be horribly twisted into hedonistic destruction quiet easily. It's built on the concept of true freedom, and all the dangers that come with it. We're currently witnessing a major challenge to that balance now in the west. The sense of community, individuality, and purpose are under attack and being eroded at. It's why figures like JP are becoming so popular. The rift is forming as so many non-western values are being forced into their society, as the traditional values are being treated as extremism by those in power.

    This idea is brilliant. A person Picking one thing to pursue in life and understanding their “Why” for that goal is one of the most meaningful things to do in life. That’s because what is most valuable to that person is incredibly important to pursue. It makes a persons life way more meaningful than pursuing the multiplicity of different goals/values at the same time because YOU ONLY HAVE TO FOCUS ON ONE THING. Instead of worrying yourself to death and feeling like you’re missing out on everything else in life.
    We do become more productive, feel more meaning in life, and become more creative while “constrained” to one goal because we have to be disciplined and creative within those parameters. Like the saying “you can only break the rules once you’ve mastered them”. Then you become unstoppable because of the momentum you have created and more comes your way in life.

    I've never liked the idea of motivation because there are a myriad of reasons that you can generate to attempt to excuse yourself from taking action on something, whereas discipline forces you to get these things done despite not feeling like you want to because it's built on habit rather than emotion.

    • @RichardHarlos
      @RichardHarlos Рік тому +7

      Fortunately, motivation and discipline aren't mutually exclusive. Machines are disciplined in that they're designed for a specific task, process, outcome. Humans also have the capacity for emotion, and that can move us into areas beyond the constraint of 'a machine designed for a task'. I think the most actualizing humans manage to leverage both their emotional parts and their disciplined parts into a coherent whole, of which we also might say that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

    • @thelongnguyens
      @thelongnguyens Рік тому +3

      Interesting take, thanks for sharing. I agree with your view on being disciplined, doing things even if you're not feeling like it, such as getting up early everyday. It's the foundation you're building upon. To me, motivation is the drive that keeps you going above and beyond to achieve goals in life. Motivation and discipline are mutually exclusive, together they transform us into performers to achieve greater things that average people might see as impossible.

    3 kinds of work;
    Production, Maintenance & Prototype.
    Production is the least fulfilling, most boring, but is the most necessary (Pick up a rock, put it over there, pick up another rock...). You must pass through a morning ritual to have the hopes of consistently starting this engine up.
    Prototype is the most fulfilling and the most capricious. No problem starting this one up. Good luck monetizing it to fill your belly. No prob
    The ticklish one that can drag the whole thing down is maintenance. The secret to doing this is scheduling. Daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, yearly, etc... Once each item is safely ensconced in the schedule, you can clear your memory of it until its turn in the schedule comes up. Waking up in the morning is far easier.
