It was fascinating to watch how you layer the colors and understanding why you pick the materials you do. Plus, the painting is beautiful and Roger is adorable.
Some of the best advice I’ve heard. Wish i had heard this before I did everything you talk about - buy too many watercolour paints, feel the guilt, expect to make masterpieces every time I get a new sheet of paper. One thing I wish I did was spend all the money I spent on mediums on good paper instead. Now I spend the money I used to spend on beer on a very good quality pad at the start of each month and I let myself have a sheet of good paper every day to do what I want on. A good equivalence ☺️
Too many watercolors is less of an issue as you will end up using them. Good paper is important but you can't store it for too long as it deteriorates and is then unusable for watercolors. Sounds like you found the perfect balance! :)
I just found your channel.. I find your art fascinating. You are so right about being seduced by supplies.. it's much harder now with social media and the internet putting anything you want at your fingertips.
I think the problem is also the art studio aesthetic and pictures of ok-ish studies with beautiful art supplies, rainbow paint, brushes on lovely background and so on. It's a bit ridiculous really, but I have t peel myself away from these!
The spots on that octopus are so good! I love how you do tiny textures so well. I hope i will be as good as you some day ♡ I'm 3 years younger than you (i feel so old!) But just started art school. 😅 i havent drawn anything since highschool so its been weird taking it up again. I want to thank you though because i learn so much from your videos plus your art is just inspiring.
You're not old ^^' what would that make me? ancient? XD Never too late to pick up drawing again! I have a successful artist friend who picked up art later in life, around 40 I think, and he's now super successful, so yeah, life is long!
@@stephanie.kilgast lol i meant BUT i feel so old. You have an amazingly youthful energy like camilla d'errico who I think just turned 40 this year. I had thought she was in her early 30s too. Being in class with 18 year olds is probably making me feel older too 😅 Life is long! It just feels short
I just started watercolor last fall.. I'm 47. ;) I did paint in acrylics for decades before that.. I felt like I got a late start being 20. I had limited opportunities in school, and everything started with drawing which I'm quite terrible at, so I thought I had no talent.. turns out painting and drawing are two different things. Thank to US public television at the time for letting us know anyone can paint.. I really wish they would bring back those shows. At the other end of the spectrum my youngest daughter is an accomplished artist at 17, she's been producing art since she could hold a tool. She's much more talented naturally than I am though.. she's like a musician who can pick up any instrument and play it. She has been selling her work since age 12.
@@waymire01 your daughters talent probably has more to do with your parenting style than just natural ability. My drawing teacher had a child psychologist do a presentation on childrens artwork and when they develop certain skills and what creates "artists" vs people that "cant draw". The whole presentation pretty much boiled down to "there is no such thing as talent. Just people that were properly encouraged" because the skills children learn can still be learned, it just might be a little harder like picking up another language as an adult. Being positive about your child's early drawings and not asking harsh questions like "what is that" encourages them to draw more and thus gain the right mark making skills and later better looking skills. Plus if you were doing your paintings at the time she would probably want to be like you. :) Anyway ... PBS! I love bob ross, i have yet to actually try one of his style of oil painting though. I only vaguely remember other painting or drawing shows. There probably are still some painting shows on or at least reruns on the "create" channel. I mostly only see the cooking shows there like americas test kitchen but i know there's also craft shows. I'm trying to get into urban sketching with watercolors atm between semesters. As usual, harder than it looks lol but I'll keep trying.

I was born there, but my mum is French, so I am too. I also went to a French school in Germany. However I grew up bilingual French/German (I speak German to my dad, who is a Finn) ANYWAY, this all explains my weird Germano French accent ^^
@@stephanie.kilgast Oh I see, I have been watching your channel since 2019 so I may have seen something somewhere that convinced me of such. I did do some clay birds inspired on what I saw you doing. :)

I really enjoyed this tutorial. I appreciate the detailed process, seeing the layering of colors and highlights/shadows.
This is wonderful, I think Roger thinks that you’re talking to him because there’s no other human in the room.
exactly!

@@stephanie.kilgast eek I didn’t think about paper longevity. Another important lesson 😅😊
Oh WOW what a gift you have. If i ever doodle it's always sea creatures, but they definitely aren't as fabulous as your octopus!! Xx
thank you! it's mostly practice :)
A wonderful work!! 😲🥰
thank you!

What type of paper are you using?
100% cotton paper, half hot pressed (satin) from Clairefontaine (I live in France)
