Thank you so much for this interview Brodie! I never met her, but my Dad ran into Dontrelle’s mom while she was working parking at the Coliseum! He said she was so nice and welcoming!
Brodie, what you're doing now is important work. It helps us heal. Thanks for this interview; I always loved D-Train, and I always wished he would have played for the A's. It reminds me of one time during batting practice, when CC was making big money for NY, I shouted down to him from the right field bleachers something like "hey CC, would you ever come pitch for Oakland?" I didn't expect him to even acknowledge me, but he came back with "hell yeah." I turned and looked at my future wife, the future mother of my children and I was like "wow, what if we got CC?" By the time we had kids, I could not afford to raise them at the Coli like my Grandpa did for me. We went to a few games each year, but it wasn't the same. When I was a kid, my Grandpa would take us to the game at the drop of a hat, and we'd sit in the old bleachers. To bring it back to D-Train, next time you interview him, please ask him if he was ever in conversations to join the A's. With the regional pride aspect of baseball, it always bothered me to see guys like him play for Miami, instead of our A's.
I love how energetic and lovingly he talks about growing up that baseball in Oakland can change paths of young kids. I grew up on the other side of the bay, but went to a game as a kid before Mt. Davis ruined that ballpark. The energy in that stadium was always electric! Disappointed that the classic green and gold are leaving.
I remember playing pick up ball after school with D-train at St. Elizabeth High School with a tennis ball and aluminum bat! He was probably 7-8 yrs old and we were 11-12. Those were the days!
Yeah. I remember when The A's moved from Kansas City and immediately became a powerhouse. That first edition won 4 World Series. All Oakland needed to do was make sure there was a new ballpark. I hope MLB will go back there. NY can have 2 teams. Chicago can have 2 teams. LA can have 2 teams. The Bay Area can and have supported 2 teams. As a fan of a particular team it would hurt me dearly to lose them to a different city. The team I love is mine for life. Good to see you Dontrelle.
I heard Dontrelle was going to transfer to Woodcreek High School in Roseville outside Sacramento to play with his cousin Roney Johnson, who was from Oakland and California player of the year in 99 and 1 of the top recruits in the country. I always wondered if that rumor was true growing up.

I inherited Dontrelle's JV jersey from high school (he didn't need it for long) and he was kind enough to sign it when I mailed it in to the Marlins.
