good video :D hello i have a bmv compact n42, if you are in the mood i answer i have a question in the bey of my n42. Cold Star fires without a problem on the key. It reaches the operating temperature and drives normally, the engine can run without problems for a couple of hours. But when it goes out and then after a few minutes or half an hour it is harder to light, it has to spin more until it is assembled. So when the motor is harder to start at operating temperature.
I had similar issues when chain jumped for 1 tooth on the intake camshaft... You can check my videos on replacing the chain (ua-cam.com/video/Pi9fWWNf0gA/v-deo.html). I would first do a compression test when cold and when hot (when it wont start). You can also check for VANOS position with INPA to see if your intake camshaft is in correct position. Correct intake position is arround 120 deg (+/-5 %). Also, dont forget to check for error with INPA.
yo billerzenn wanna give me some of you're wisdom? so i changed the chain and everything but resently after maybe 1k km it started to sligtly rattle sometimes why do you think this is? also during idle the engine makes some random noices like it changes something witch i think is the vvt but it sort of clunks when it does it and also pretty freqvently i dont recall it doing that before im going to have a look under the cover this weekend but could all of this have to do with the vvt or what ?😅
Sure sounds like VALVETRONIC issues. If you don't have any error codes, then I would suggest you remove the valve cover and inspect everything. Especially the rocker arms, intermediate levers and valvetronic springs.
Well, let's look at it like this: VANOS sprocket has 38 teeth, which means if the chain jumped on the exhaust side for 1 tooth it would result in 9.5 deg of offset in any direction. Usually chain jumps in to retarded position due to engine rotating clockwise. The N42/N46 engines are known to have this issue with the VANOS position drifting towards the retarded position, like in my case where I have my intake at 119 and exhaust at 55 deg. If 60 deg is correct position, then my 55 deg is 5 deg retarded, which means an 8,3% error, which is tolerable (above 11% will trigger a code). I think there is probably nothing wrong with your car. If your engine works without any issues and there are no error codes, then I would not worry too much about it.
@@E90dga Definitely some VALVETRONIC issue. It's probably not the sensor, It's quite smart and it throws other errors when faulty. I would suspect valvetronic servomotor or valvetronic bearings. How did you check the valvetronic servomotor? There is a procedure to test if the valvetronic eccentric shaft has correct tension (www.newtis.info/tisv2/a/en/e46-316ti-com/repair-manuals/11-engine/11-37-variable-valve-gear/1VnYMYhkMF -> free registration required). Did you try scanning with INPA to get more data for this code?
hi again zen :D i recently got my inpa to work and my adap inlet is 121 now i havent recet de adaptations altho i havent done anything but timed the engine when i did the chain . my outlet is 57.9 but i dont know if that is whitin spec. what do you think could be the issue? my cylinders are -0.27(1) 0.14(2) 0.00(3) 0.13(4)
I did some testing and I can reproduce the >120 deg on the intake camshaft by aligning the front VANOS locking tool 0.5 mm to the left (exhaust) (reference point is the edge of the cylinder head). So I think this happens because there are some tolerances in the locking tools and placement. Just keep this in mind if you do the timing again at a later time and try to align the front locking tool a bit more to the right (intake) side. This will probably show up as an intermittent error code in INPA about intake VANOS being too advances, but I don't think it's problematic for the engine. The rough running data looks good. I assume the the max value in your INPA is 200 and if you disconnect a coil you get about +20. So your relative rough values are well under +/-10% which is the point where you have a problem.
@@BimmerZen hmm ok so you think this has something to do with the timing i did? you dont belive the stepper motor could cause any of it ? also i dont get any codes for it but there is a ! ifront of the number. but thanks for the info man!
@@magnus3885 ! in front of the number is because max is supposed to be 120. Valvetronic (DC servomotor) does not play any role in determining the camshaft timing.
@@BimmerZen oh ok btw i read a manual on timing job and chain replacement yesterday and in the manual they removed the vacumm pump and twisted the cams to make sure they were locked could this be an issue that even tho the vanos units are ok they arent locked ? that you just have to turn them abit inorder to lock? if so that could probably have something to do with it i did not check if they acually where locked . I still get ocationally a rattle on a cold start for like 3 secs.

@@BimmerZen I'll take a good look, it's mostly semi-general. Worked cylinder head and compound engine and tool serrated.
The link of the 0.6Nm measuring torque is not lorger avaible... 😅
How to know if these are bad ?

yo billerzenn wanna give me some of you're wisdom? so i changed the chain and everything but resently after maybe 1k km it started to sligtly rattle sometimes why do you think this is? also during idle the engine makes some random noices like it changes something witch i think is the vvt but it sort of clunks when it does it and also pretty freqvently i dont recall it doing that before im going to have a look under the cover this weekend but could all of this have to do with the vvt or what ?😅
Sure sounds like VALVETRONIC issues. If you don't have any error codes, then I would suggest you remove the valve cover and inspect everything. Especially the rocker arms, intermediate levers and valvetronic springs.
@@BimmerZen y gonna have a look
My inlet vanos is 120 degrees
But my outlet vanos is 59 degrees instead of 55 like your , what does it mean ?
I did not find any reason of this 55 instead of 60. But 59 is better than 55.
I have 2a6f code. What could it be? Valvetronic motor, eccentric shaft sensor or something else ??? Car feels slow at lower rpm. Btw good videos :)
I tested valvetronic motor and it seems to be working, but i dont know if it works correctly.
Why did your EIN vanos not lock??
I'm still not 100% sure why. I suspected clogged locking pin so I cleaned the whole unit.
@@BimmerZen Thanks for a quick answer! Awesome channel. I have AUS vanos that was not locking. I dismantled it but found no evidence of that. I have placed a new one. I watched your video when you assembled the head of an engine, but you did not check the valve timings after screwing the bolts. Or I missed it. So after cleaning is it ok? Also did you try to lock in place your old one?
valvetronic dc motor montage ?
Wearing of eccentric shaft at zylinder 4.
Could be... or a bad lifter. I'll have to do some tests:)
@@BimmerZen Sir, have u performed this test with video? -)
@@michaelgerasimov6457 I did perform several test and also replaced the nr. 4 lifters with no improvement. I have the footage, but I would like to solve the issue for the final video...
The n42 vanos looks much less complicated and less expensive than the system on the m54 motor.
In the next two months I’m swapping my n42b20 engine for m52tub28.
This video just made me wonder if this engine is worth a swap 🤔.
Hello. Help me please. I have a problem with the sound of the engine when starting. The knock disappears when the intake vanos goes into operation. Here is an example video: ua-cam.com/video/6SI0tCD_LY0/v-deo.html
