    - On treading very carefully in translating, interpreting the Prophetic narratives and other Islamic texts- ‘it’s a type of blasphemy’, ‘this is a crime’ (thankfully this has greatly improved in the last twenty years, we now have some stunning English translations)
    - This kind of translation requires analysis and familiarity with classical Arabic (lisanul ‘arab) -which would extend to the study of Jahilliyah poetry, very advanced nahw, sarf and balagha
    - Recognition, admonition that Muslims have always relied on holding onto the rope of Allah as the indefatigable weapon against enemies of Islam, as the Companions of the Prophet i.e Umar acclaimed
    - Brief discussion on the difficulties of seeking knowledge in the Arab world- (this was twenty years ago and long before the destruction of Syria and other places)
    - Preservation of the religion is of paramount importance to the ummah- we have to be much more nuanced in our discussion on scholars who do not publicly challenge or attack Islamic/Arab rulers- we need to respect their ‘firasa and basira’ i.e. their inner eye/wisdom or recognition of complexity in these very complex matters that a layman usually has no clue about nor are they in a position of power/responsibility
    - Very Prophetic to highlight the nuance, complexity and layering of the human experience- in all its forms- we are not Manicheans (we do not look at things in a binary, black and white way)
    - Dr Murad (Winter) highlights the difficulty for traditional religious institutions in capturing the minds and hearts of young people (this was twenty years ago- come and see how difficult it is now!)
    - Islam is really not ideological, wrong to compare it to Marxism and Liberalism and other ideologies
    - Dr Yusuf highlights the feebleness of some of the Islamic sects that have caused fitan on the fringes of the orthodox, middle path of the ahl al Sunnah
    - All Muslims should seek basic, fundamental knowledge of the deen i.e. Quran, aqidah and seerah- not everyone must be a scholar
    - We need Islam accurately and beautifully represented in all spheres of public (+private) life
    - We are not a religion of pamphlets- we are a religion of Alhambra Palace, of Andalusian Cordoba, of the Taj Mahal- we must reflect on our glorious past to make a glorious PRESENT- our present will be our future- and it needs to be much more vigorous, we need much more leadership and excellence- going beyond fitnah, cantankerous in-fighting and the laghwi of modern discourse (God help us with social media!)
    - Muslim clothes are beautiful clothes- they are ‘khalifa clothes’- Adamic and respectful in their appearance- they carry a certain dignity and heeba which we must not lose to Western customs/clothing
    - The West really needs Islam- Christianity (in a postmodernist, post-Nietschzian 'God is dead', post WWI and WWII world) is failing people and is a moribund religion- Islam can replace this huge, continental, Atlantic sized spiritual hole- this is on us as Muslims to relay the deen with taqwa, truth and beauty
    - 'this is the deen of the fitrah', 'we don't have time to bicker'
