who are the 68 who gave a thumbs down? it is a crying shame that we live in this country that people have prosperity and wealth (compraed to most other countries) and enlightenment, and knowledge and animals do not get good knowledgable owners, but get uneducated, uncaring or stupid owners. sad sad sad. it is a good thing that there are people who do care and will do what they can to help those who cannot speak and help themselves.

Man, reminds me of the Horses we rescued. My sister leads an organisation which does almost the same. But in a much smaller scale. We live in Switzerland by the way. And yes, Horse abuse also exists over here. Sadly. But between all of this misery, there are stories like this. I thought I`ll share mine here too. Almost seven years ago, approximmately, Zaphira came to us. A Friesian Mare. Before she came to us, she had eleven previous owners. Eleven. In the end, most of them said, that she has a uncontrollable temper. She is dangerous and all that stupid shittalk you get to hear if people don`t know what they are doing. Matter of fact, they all did things that she didn`t want to do. Abuse. BUT, Zaphira is very strong in her mind. She fought back. In the end, she killed one of her previous owners. A man. I point that out for a reason but more to that later. After this owner ended up competing in the room temperature challenge, she was brought to the slaughterhouse. A last second call, literally, saved her life. My sister saved here. But my sister has al ready horses so, she was looking for an owner. Shortcut here, my mother took her. Now the funny part. At least for me. Before my first encounter, I had no idea that she killed one of her previous owners, so my sister warned me. "Be careful. She absolutely hates men." And here I am. A clueless dude that walks up to a mare that absolutely, positively, hates men. The thing is, I really didn`t make a lot of it. I said to myself "I`m going in there and I`ll have a look. Just a glance of what lays ahead in the future." I was curious. I wanted to know what I am dealing with. So I walked into the stable, and there she was. Beautiful horse. Really beautiful. She looked at me and I looked at her. Nothing happened. Her ears weren`t pinned back. She was curious. Like me. I stepped towards here. Nothing happened. In the end, nothing. Absolutely nothing. No aggressive gestures on her behalf. Really a calm horse. I have to add here that, at that time, seven years ago, I didn`t have the knowledge about horses that I have now. I was a complete newbie. Clueless. But it was her, that really brought me into this. Horses. She was my teacher. Showed me what is right and what not. She never bit me, she never kicked me. I struggled a lot of times because I didn`t know what to do. Zaphira wants a leader. She is looking for someone, that she can trust. That she can depend on. Somebody who goes ahead and takes over the lead. Like pretty much every horse. And I wasn`t anything of that. So I started to learn more about horses. Behaviour, especially in the wild, structures of a herd etc. And then I started to understand and see, what mistakes I have done trying to be her leader. Now, seven years later, you wouldn`t believe it. Just a few weeks ago, my sister told me "You do realize that you are the only man that she trusts. And that you are the only man, that didn`t get hurt while being around her." I finally achieved what I`ve been looking for. She accepted me as her leader. Took me a long time to figure out but in the end, the result is what matters. A few days ago, my mother rode her through the forest. Sometimes, I join her and walk in front of her. At an intersection, I said to her, that I`m going to take a shortcut and we would meet on the other turn. As soon as I started walking, I heard my mother struggling with Zaphira to go the other way. And after she finally did, she neighed through the forest. At the rendez-vous point, as I cal it, I saw her in the distance. Running. After the reunion, she calmed down. I was blown away. I remember looking at her and say "I really got you now don`t I." What did I learn in all those years? Horses are not what many people make them. Yes, she killed one of her owners because he sneaked up behind her, hitting her on the back. The response was fear. She kicked to get that predator of her tail that attacked her. But she became a fantastic horse. Really fantastic. Well, men she doesn`t know are still a problem. But I`m working on it. Maybe this is the wrong place for a story like this but, she sufferd aswell. The circumstances were very similar. And my sister still saves horses on a daily basis and I help her with that where I can. Either with money or with work. And I love it. Giving those horses something back that they always wanted. Someone who cares. I hope I don`t bother anybody with this. Most likely this comment will stay unnoticed, my guess. But I thought I`ll share that. I want you people to know that, look at a rescued horse, work with it, and see what result you achieve. It`ll blow your mind away. Props to the Humane Society for doing what they do. I have big respect for them. Cheers.

BlackFoxFalcon God bless you. Now tell that story all over the horse world. So many ignorant people are out there that end up ruining perfectly good horses. Tell them how to do it the right way. You learned, now teach others. Young people most of all. They simply don't know and they're being told all the wrong things by people that claim to know it all but who are full of horsecrap. Take young kids to ride and groom your horses, teach them to respect them and how to treat them right. Start with the local school. Get 4 or 5 kids under your wings every year and send them out to other barns to spread the message. We can't change the old ones, who won't admit they are wrong, but we can prevent the young ones to believe them and become like them.

BlackFoxFalcon : I just read your story from A to Z...& I loved every word of it! ღ.¸¸.✿Amazing story! It should be documented on UA-cam! Some-one should look you up & make a small Documentary about you & your Frisian mare...I think what we (the readers of your story) can learn from this, is that with sincerity, RESPECT & true love anything can be achieved! Bless you for saving her! It is scandalous that horses are sent to slaughter when they become "useless" for owners! It is an outrage! When men did not have boats, trains, busses, cars & airplanes this noble creature allowed them to travel ...It should become illegal to dispose of old horses like if they are garbage..I found your story searching for an interview about the horses in New York...From today they are safe, parked in the shade in Central Park, away from the traffic of the city! It took years of signing petitions & fighting for the well-being of these sensitive beautiful creatures... Bless you & your sister for saving Zaphira from slaughter ! ღ.¸¸.✿I will share your story on Fbk!

Called vet as soon we got her home. mane was full of ticks and lice. She was expecting colt. Lots of love and vet brought them both thru! Followed with years of love and pleasure.

Y’know, when I was around 9 my riding instructor held a protest against a woman who went on holidays and left her emaciated horses for two weeks. The RSPCA (I’m in Australia) took 2 horses. 2. 2 of the 23 horses that were being starved and worked to death. 9 year old me stood there with that sign in my hand for 5 hours non-stop. The lovely person next-door to her let us in his back yard and we were throwing small handfuls of grass over the fence into the 10m x 12m yard all the horses were in. The woman’s husband was filming us and yelling, saying we were trespassing and everyone stepped back except for me, my instructor and a few other kids determined to save these poor animals. The husband called the cops and instead of turning up for us, he was arrested and 10 more horses seized. I’m not sure if the rest got out but with our small protest we saved the lives of 10 horses. Do what you can guys, even if it’s donating a few dollars. That’s like the cost of a sandwich. C’mon.

When i see things like this on the internet, my heart bleeds my soul cries. These wonderful creatures do not deserve this happening to them. We have used and abused horses for centuries yet the old ways of dealing with these majestic creatures is dying. the old school ways of treating these animals are finally going the way of the Doe doe. Yet we still see things like this happening to horses more often than we should. we still see truck loads of horses shipped off to slaughter. These horses are so beautiful. I had rescued a horse in conditions a little worse than this i renamed him Phoenix He was a Quarter horse Paint and it took months of feeding and a little more exercise as he got stronger. I bought everything he would ever need in his future life with me I had him almost a year before he died of a neurological episode in the early hours of the morning and had to be put to sleep. I miss him every day. So when i see people volunteering their precious time and money to help horses that need help as bad as these do, it restores my faith in humanity it warms my heart and restores my hope in the world around me. These horses deserve better. If i had a property big enough, i would buy all of these horses and give them a permanent home with me but unfortunately i don't and boarding such an amount of horses would be an expense i could not cope with right now. I have the time i just don't have the land here in Canada. I hope all these horse found loving homes with families that would take care of them forever. because they deserve that at least.

Breaks my heart that there are such cruel people in this world that have no feeling for God's precious creatures. There is a special place in heaven for these good and caring people who are helping these horses. God bless each of you.

Back when California had their terrible North country fires, I volunteered in helping feed and water the horses at the Del Mar Fair stables. I want to do more now.

I gave my precious 16 year old paint mare my love of my life cause I was too heavy to ride and 3 months later, he called me. I went to get her and found her totally in skin and bones. she could hardly walk and the left hind leg was retracting. so she was walking on three legs. it broke my heart. I took her and helped her get back slowly and I lost my 179 lbs to ride again. then I stored her at a friends place and they took her trail riding and gave her away to people in Oregon and never found her. She was my life friend to do that to me tore me to pieces. I would never trust anyone again. because of that I sold everything and got out. its been years now and still feel that way. I love horses. now I just donate like so man good people do...I love you lacy...

I wish the Humanr Society of the U.S. could also get involved in stopping the horrible abuse of the Tennessee Walking Horses at the "Big Lick" shows. Those horses are severely abused as they are "forced" to perform in the show ring! It tears my guts to watch the videos! The owners, trainers, riders, and venue personnel all need to be arrested, prosecuted and do prison time. While in prison, each and every one of them need to be forced to wear heavy cement shoes, have their ankles blistered, wear heavy painful chains and with electric cattle prods, be forced to trot around the exercise yard each and every day of their incarnation. In one video I saw a trainer, zap the horse (reluctant to enter the ring) right smack on the bit which caused the horse to rear in PAIN, all the while wearing massive lift boots and heavy chains! And thus the horse, beaten into submission entered the ring. The "soring" of their patterns is done behind the scenes in their stalls, .....a if a horse goes down due to severe pain, stable hands beat it with boards/sticks to force it back to its feet. "All this for a piece of colored ribbon!" It's sad, ..... it's sick! I hope the State of Tennessee is proud of itself for turning a blind eye to this HORRIFIC TERRIFYING CRUELTY! - ACD. If you don't believe what I have stated, watch some of the videos on youtube about stopping the Big Lick abuse....that is if your stomach can take it!

When I graduate high school, I want to own a rescue barn for horses and get them to trust humans again by gently working with them and not forcing them to do things they can’t do or aren’t willing to do until they are ready. Then I’ll hopefully find them good homes. They are my favourite animals and I don’t ever want to stop working with them.

I owned and worked with horses and I am sad and angry that people treat horses like this. I hope the owner got charged with neglecting them. Horses are beautiful creatures and have a loving , unconditional soul and love to give to anyone who gives love and compassion to them. I would help these horses so much if I knew how. All these horses are in my hearts to get back to normal health and to heal from their pain and suffering that they have gone through. Way to go everyone who assisted in helping these horses and making them feel loved again.
