The idea of *not* sacking, pillaging and slaughtering a conquered city is a very modern idea. Better logistics and more organized fighting probably contribute to this greatly. In our time, of course, war crime tribunals and media coverage help as well.
@@kohinarec6580 Not necessarily. Cyrus of the Achaemenid empire, the first Muslim Caliphs etc all spared the cities they conquered. Not that Muslims or any other civilization (they certainly did) didn't engage in destruction and plunder, bu that it was not uncommon for conquerors to spare the conquered.
It was possibly not unique for Europeans, but sent shockwaves throughout the Muslim world, who have not encountered such violence before. It was a common occurrence for a city to change hands, as Jerusalem changed hands just months before the Crusaders arrived. Arab and Turkish historians of the time describe the event with disbelief and disgust. Muslims did not exert the same amount of violence against Crusader states in the two centuries after, and they spared everyone's lives when they took back Jerusalem. I learned some time ago that my ancestor and founder of my family, Yaghi Siyan, was the governor of Antioch under the Seljuk empire during the first crusade. He died during the sack but his family survived in Damascus.
2:50 Alexios had heard that the Crusade was over from Count Stephen of Blois, who was marching back towards Constantinople with his army after the food had run out in Antioch. Stephen made it all the way back to France, where his wife Adela (a daughter of William the Conqueror) demanded he go back and finish the Crusade. He made it back in time to get killed in a different battle where Godfrey's brother Baldwin left him to die. 🤷♂️
Brillant, The Crusaders were Brillant! I This an amazing content. And a major response to Islamic brutality and agression. Fellow Christians, here lies our glory past. Amen
I find it interesting that many are commenting on your “pro Christian bias.” If anything, these videos are biased in the other direction. The first video spends mere seconds breezing over the fact that all of these places were conquered by muslims for hundreds of years prior to the 1st Crusade. (which was a response to the rapid Muslim conquest of the territory) You don’t need to be a historian to do the very simple math. Christianity is older than Islam. Christianity was founded and spread for over 600 years without Islam existing. These videos start by saying these two groups were at war, while showing a map of basically 50/50 percent ownership. How do you think the Muslims achieved that territory in the first place? Offers of milk and cookies?
Like everything now you need to suck the Muslims if you don't want to be labeled as "Islamophobe" and lose all social life (at least in the "woke" world) and it's very easy to get that status.
@@whowoulge1256 It is all about commitment. Sending soldiers thousands of miles away without any commissariat whatsoever it is a feat in itself. Crusaders fought relying only on their faith. Deus Vult!

Ah ok I understand, looks like every video could take a bit of time to make especialy if you have a full time job to work around. Alexander the great eh? Awesome, I cant wait :)
great video thanks a lot I'm so sorry to see all this wars and slaughters in the name of religions and all conflicts because land and lust I hope we can live together in peace in the end it's our planet
Not bad, but this video leaves out a few key aspects of the capture of Jerusalem during the First Crusade. Historians now believe that the massacre at Jerusalem was exaggerated in the Latin sources to make a good story for people back home. The Muslim sources contemporary to the siege (like Ibn al-Qalanisi) say almost nothing about the capture of Jerusalem in 1099, passing over it as a rather minor event and a typical capture of a city.
Yep, but it might've been helpful to clarify that point a bit further. I also think we need to be careful about describing this event with phrases like "orgy of slaughter", since we really aren't sure to what extent the massacre reached. People were killed, yes but we're really not sure who was killed, nor how many people. I also think it's pretty important to point out how indifferent the Muslim chronicles from the actual period are toward this event. Ibn al-Qalanisi is possibly our only contemporary account, and he's extremely laconic about it. Later sources at the time of Saladin inflate the capture of Jerusalem and make it out to be this big horrific event, but that appears to be more a product of story telling and legend building over time.
I know you know these sources well, so this is genuine query rather than argument, but Christopher Tyerman does use the phrase 'the ensuing massacre shocked Muslim and Jewish opinion'. (p.23, The Crusades, A Very Short Introduction, OUP). He is referring to other later sources?
Tyerman is a great historian, and I would never question his credentials. I have of course read the comment to which you're referring, and all I can say is it is a rather vague and general comment. I would be interested to know exactly what Muslim and Jewish opinion he is talking about. He may very well be referring more to the legend of 1099 that grew over time as leaders like Saladin and Nur ad-Din created new jihad rhetoric to fuel their war against the Crusaders. The fact is that the actual contemporary sources we have for the capture of Jerusalem, as recorded by non-Christians, are rather vague and brief, and don't show much interest or moral outrage, if any at all.
Have you heard of Neutrality? I mean in your vids all you do is finding sources to justify the shit crusaders did...And you often take the pro-catholic side of the factors...

Thank you, glad you enjoyed it!
I learned some time ago that my ancestor and founder of my family, Yaghi Siyan, was the governor of Antioch under the Seljuk empire during the first crusade. He died during the sack but his family survived in Damascus.
how do you know that?
dani mouver Yeah exactly
dani mouver My ancestor was George washington
Vlady Boi no he’s mine
my ancestor was ngolo kante
Bohemond: look at me I’m the prince now
😂😂
2:50 Alexios had heard that the Crusade was over from Count Stephen of Blois, who was marching back towards Constantinople with his army after the food had run out in Antioch. Stephen made it all the way back to France, where his wife Adela (a daughter of William the Conqueror) demanded he go back and finish the Crusade. He made it back in time to get killed in a different battle where Godfrey's brother Baldwin left him to die. 🤷♂️
this channel is pure gold
The best history channel I have come across...
I would love to see this as a legitmate movie.
Soon saladin vs lion heart. thanks for the good vid, i hope to see more soon :)
That map of Antioch, Jesus Christ. I never thought about its scale and complexity
Amazing videos. Loved it. Subscribed. Hope you upload more in the future.
Superb work guys.. Great graphics and narration. Plz keep making more such history videos
Brillant, The Crusaders were Brillant! I This an amazing content. And a major response to Islamic brutality and agression.
Fellow Christians, here lies our glory past.
Amen
Deus voult cristianity si back
Christhans people are now converting to islam or atheist
@@shabeer9669 Nope. Only Protestants do that
man this is top notch, ty.
wow I really impressed by your video's quality
Hi! your videos are just amazing, I could watch them a hundred times and never be tired of them! good work men! Greetings from Argentina
Thank you Juan!
Your work is awesome!! What a fantastic video!! Cheers.
I find it interesting that many are commenting on your “pro Christian bias.” If anything, these videos are biased in the other direction. The first video spends mere seconds breezing over the fact that all of these places were conquered by muslims for hundreds of years prior to the 1st Crusade. (which was a response to the rapid Muslim conquest of the territory)
You don’t need to be a historian to do the very simple math. Christianity is older than Islam. Christianity was founded and spread for over 600 years without Islam existing. These videos start by saying these two groups were at war, while showing a map of basically 50/50 percent ownership. How do you think the Muslims achieved that territory in the first place? Offers of milk and cookies?
Exactly! Well said.
Well said
Like everything now you need to suck the Muslims if you don't want to be labeled as "Islamophobe" and lose all social life (at least in the "woke" world) and it's very easy to get that status.
@Dara atleast we don't behead those who disrespects our prophets, and we also don't threaten anyone to convert in christianity on this modern times
The Muslims didn't kill everyone and had more discipline.
I haven't watched the video yet, but i know it's gonna be a great one!
Keep up the good work, guys.
Blessings!
I could listen to you narrate anything
This is a good sleep time series, hope you're stilling making these, very knowledgeable and interesting
Great job! Love your channel from Greece!
Great work! Could we expect more of these 3D style battlemap layouts, like in this video?
Thank you! 3D maps come from Osprey, so it depends on future topics and what they have.
Nothing but nothing can withstand true Faith! Deus Vult!
except the fact that every crusade after this failed to accomplish anything and the muslim forces recaptured everything in the end.
@@whowoulge1256 It is all about commitment. Sending soldiers thousands of miles away without any commissariat whatsoever it is a feat in itself. Crusaders fought relying only on their faith. Deus Vult!

Glad to hear it, thank you!
If you want to know what happened from here, the movie "Kingdom of Heaven" pretty much starts where this finishes.
recently found this channel and its just fantastic! I've been searching for a channel like this for years, theres so many things i'd want you to cover, WW2, Hannibals campaign against Rome, various battles in Chinese and Japanese history etc. Its a shame it appears you dont upload often which is a shame, not sure what the reason for this is but i eagerly await your next video. Keep up the awesome work :)
Thank you! Yes, I don't get to make as many videos as I'd like, each one takes quite a bit of time and things are very busy at work. Hope to do this full time one day though. Now working on an Alexander the Great series..
Ah ok I understand, looks like every video could take a bit of time to make especialy if you have a full time job to work around. Alexander the great eh? Awesome, I cant wait :)
Absolutely stunning job. Well done, man!
Thank you!
you guys are the only UA-cam channel deserves support , i wish you all good luck :)
Thank you!
I love your voice so much! It's like your melting the English language into pure gold.

Finally part 2! Thanks Jesus
Imagine having this Guy as your history teacher in School
Best history channel on youtube alongside Kings and Generals! I really hope you do this for all the crusades :)
Great Video. I like how there isn't much bias and you stick true to the history as much as you can within the time limit.
@4:31 Note: The Shia have always colluded with the West against Sunnis.
Who gives you this information.. don't you ever think that you should probably talk with THE SENNIS AND THE SHIA PEOPLE FIRST ????!!
today other way round. The Sunnis are best friend of the West, and the Shia of Iraq and Iran are enemies!
Lmfao like the Turks didn’t conquer all of Suni islam as an outsider
@@joeroganstrtshots881 You can't be an outsider when you're a Sunni Muslim.
Keep lyfao fool.
Which is why I was keen to point out that the massacre was not unique for the age. But glad you thought not bad overall.
Well done! Crazy history that illustrates how "government" is and always has been the root of almost all of the world's problems. The Pope and the sultans were forms of government back then.
World class documentaries!
Please do an American Civil War battle (Gettysburg, Antietam, Fredericksburg) the casualty numbers in the battles alone are worthy of an epic history episode! Keep up the great work, I enjoy donating to you, and look forward to every new episode of Epic History regardless of topic.
