I most definitely agree it’s an excellent film, but Netflix had nothing to do with the actual making of it. It was made by Paramount Pictures who decided because of Covid-19 that it would be better to sell the film to Netflix. Netflix paid $56 million for the rights. The same situation happened with Paramount Pictures “Coming 2 America” which premieres on Amazon Prime on March 5th.
Shortly after Hoffman "re-emerged" after hiding from the law for years in upstate N.Y., my girlfriend and I saw him at a farmer's market in Watertown, N.Y., with HIS girlfriend. I wanted go over and shake his hand, and tell him what a hero I consider him to be. I was one of those protestors, battling cops and getting tear gassed in Buffalo, N.Y., and in DC. We need to keep fighting for our rights, or they will be stripped away.
I think people forget that great portions of the trial were televised. Likewise the demonstrations. It was a very tense and tragic time. Although I didn't go to the Chicago protests, I was an activist in the city I lived in. And the trial was such a farce, a miscarriage of justice, especially when Bobby Seale was chained and gag. Who in his right mind would do that to a black man? An in our faces illustration of what what was being protested in Chicago. This movie is a very credible rendition of actual events, although a very few of them were not entirely accurate but are altered for dramatic effect.
@Rick Fizdale I appreciate your experience and thanks for the information. I was 20 years old during that time. I am referring to the court drawings, not an actual video transmission. Should have been more clear. The image of Bobby Seale specifically made my father, who had been an attorney for the FTC for his entire career (30 years by that time), renounce his beliefs that the US criminal "justice" system, and courtrooms in particular, functioned as places where justice was meted out. It was one of the few times he and I agreed on anything during the '60s and it was a reversal of closely held beliefs for him. He never spoke about the law or respecting the courtroom again. The convention demonstrations were definitely televised.
ugh, I really loved this movie. I've lived in Chicago all my life, and the message really hit home for me. people complained over the summer about riots and protest, not understanding how truly significant and important they were, not to mention ingrained in our history. I wish I could've gone out and marched, but my family kept me home in fear of coronavirus. I'm sure I'll always regret that, even though it was out of my control. sbc's accent was inconsistent but I really liked his performance, I found myself rooting for abbie the whole way through. Mr. Abdul-Mateen's performance stood out to me, too. the dialogue was witty, the aim is significant, and the characters are very sympathetic. not the best movie ever, of course, but it's good. give it a watch!
Martin Luther King used a message of peace, love, brotherhood, and stoicism to get attention from the world. Abbie Hoffman used wit, shenanigans, comedy, and showmanship to do the same. I respect both strategies.
