I agree. And most Chromebooks do not have the specs to run Windows 10 very well. This tutorial may be worth it for someone who is tech savvy and has a higher-end Chromebook with good specs, but unless you are that type of person and willing to tinker, it's difficult to recommend this approach.
verry true, i tried with my old chromebook wich was a normal one it runs like i have 1 byte of ram. but the only worthy chromebook is an pixelbook go. i bougth one and downloaded mac os, a friend did. runs perfect

Hey thanks so much for uploading these support videos. I'm just beginning the upgrade from Chromebook to Win 10 and I'm encouraged that working within a lower budget these days does not necessarily mean you cannot still enjoy the benefits of a more functional operating system. And since I've always been a fan of Windows, it only makes sense to save some overhead by starting low and building my way up. Getting ready to run compatibility check to make sure my Samsung Chromebook 4+ can handle the switch. It's a CASTA C6B-A2B-A4V-46A-A7S. I'll keep you posted if I run into any issues along the way. Hi! I have Chromebook CASTA C6B-A2B-A4V-46A-A7S and I install Windows 10 in it, but I only have a problem with the audio driver because Windows doesn't recognize the audio driver. Did you solve this problem?
My dad called me to get my brother a laptop, budget was around $300. Found the perfect laptop for school and gaming for around $275 (it was on sale). Come to find out my dad went against my word and got a lame chromebook that my brother can’t even use in school most of the time. So hopefully doing this will make things better for him.
Another thing you should mention when your looking at chromebooks. Do some research. SOME of them you can upgrade the ram in, or in the case of my Acer 15" CB5-571 (coolstar supported) you can upgrade the ssd. I've put a 256gb one in my chromebook.

Chrome OS is already Linux. You can use Crouton to install a "normal" distro on your Chromebook.
You can use the mod from this video with Linux too and make a dual-boot system. In theory, in should even be possible to get a Chrome OS and Windows dual-boot this way (would probably require some kernel tweaking).
@@povilasstaniulis9484 I steer well clear of dual boot systems, my friend built one and had nothing but problems with it, also I'm close to being able to ditch Windows for good on my daily driver.
@@AndrewAHayes FYI using Crouton isn't a dual boot... (its hack that adds a Linux distro to Chorme OS in its development mode) But anytime you make a modification to an OS tends add more risk and stability issues.... BTW new Chromebooks have a Linux (Debian) distro built-in into that can be used in its Beta channel... But not all apps are stable on it yet... But the nice thing about Chromes OS is they are by default updated automatically ((until the AUE date) And some older models never get the newest features)... So a new ChromeBook will keep getting better at using Linux apps without any mods by the user.... So its a way for ppl that dont have the time or the knowledge to convert a PC to Linux.... To use a Linux app when they need it...
And its one way more to "ditch Windows" using Chrome OS (but there plenty of the other ways already like native Chrome or Andriod Apps) convert a PC to Linux....
Since "ditch Windows" is always a good thing, no matter how you do it :) So good luck...

Did this once for a friend. The Chromebook was a pretty rare rugged education version of Lenovo Thinkpad X131e (code name "Stout"). Really nice machine, built to withstand significant abuse. Perfect laptop for what my friend intended to use it for (car diagnostics/tuning using the OBD port).
@2:15 Definitely not "much better". Both Acers have entry level low-power chips. Braswell N3060 is much faster single-core wise while the Cherry Trail Atom has more total horsepower due to having more cores. I would personally pick Braswell over Atom because of better software compatibility (Atoms require a lot of custom drivers to work on any OS).

I wont lie, this wasn't straightforward for me. I'm not a computer guy and this is the first experiment of this type I have ever done. I did have some issues with this damn yellow shell screen so took advice from DB Tech and ISO'd an older version of Windows 10 (Version 1803 I think) and it worked. Bought myself a cheap activation key online and here I am - running Windows 10 Home on my very small, very quiet Acer Chromebook...
I've not tried to push its capabilities and I probably wont - no need. Just eternally grateful for your video and links and also DB Tech for troubleshooting some errors.

I always thought you can stick a USB flash drive in any PC and convert it to any os. I did this to alot of random computers and I always had success.

Pretty sure it's RAM the limiting factor here than the CPU itself as you pointed Don.
I have a 2012 Samsung ultrabook with a 3rd gen i5 and when it becomes sluggish and run a task manager, RAM utilization reaches 100%! The chipset with an adequate 4mb cache is powerful enough even for todays standards. Wish those Chromebooks had 8gb of RAM instead and I could live with the restricted storage option. However, it should be good to run any Ubuntu variation. Please do update us as soon as you have tested it as it might worth to invest on it! :)

What u wrote is wrong, How much space Windows 10 takes us depends upon how big ur hard drive is and remember delete all the partitiions before installing Windows 10 or just follow the directions in this video: ua-cam.com/video/SyrNH_qcvJg/v-deo.html then ur good to go
EDIT: Sorry also you can compress Windows 10 by running this script in Windows 10 Command Prompt (Remember to run as Administrator) Script: compact.exe /compactos:always that compacts Windows 10 to take up even LESS space, then ur ready to go!!!!!!!!!!!
I recommend Windows 10 LTSB instead of Windows 10 Home, uses less ram, storage and is generally faster
But it is harder to find a legit product key for Enterprise LTSB or LTSC because both of those are 90 day evaluation trials incase you do not have the product key compared to other non enterprise editions of Windows 10 Home or Pro which you can keep using forever without a product key, just with an Activate Windows prompt

Uhm, start the linux VM, and then install pretty anything you want for remote desktop/VNC. I'm a network admin, and routinely choose my personal Chromebook over my issued MacBook Pro for on-site configuration escapades.
does chromeOS have anything for RDP? and cisco anyconnect vpn? the problem with running a linux VM which i have is that now your technically not doing anything under its own horse power and having to spend more resources running a VM

At approximately 7:01 you mention backing up Chromebook rom to USB. You also mention booting windows from a separate USB. I have looked up videos on how to back up Chromebook to USB and I cannot find anything. Also if you can tell me how I can boot windows from an external drive that would be cool
u can. just go to chromebox script and type 1 then go into the chrome os verify off and click ctrl- L. then it should pop up the bios menu (sea bios) and then boot from the hdd/sdd.

can you powerwash the chromebook still? (mostlikely, but gotta make sure) and if so, does it revert to chrome os? or stay as windows, but delete all files and give you the storage you'd normally have on a chromeos chromebook?

When I'm in chromebook installation helper, at the select model, it doesn't show the exact model on the chromebook I have. The laptop reads 11-v031nr, its a HP Chromebook. But on the helper only two options are 11 G5 EE and 11 G5. Does this mean I can't install windows onto this laptop?
