I have been percolating coffee for years in my 1960's 4-cup Corning Ware cornflower design percolator. I find the taste of percolated coffee much nicer than filter or any other kind. Percolating gives a much smoother and richer tasting cup of coffee. I prefer Kenyan coffee beans, which I grind myself. Stovetop percolating fills the house with the wonderful aroma of fresh brewed coffee too.

I love the Starbucks whole bean in the black label I think it is a reserve, I grind just before I use it. I buy it at trade day flea market lol sounds crazy but a bag at Starbucks is about $20 and I buy it for $3 and it is in date .

One of my favourite memories is waking up at my Great grandma's house, sitting at her table and watching the water come up through the little window on the top of the percolator on her stove. The smell of that coffee and of bacon frying will always take me back to that safe wonderful place. Thanks so much for showing us how it's done Mr. Matt & Ms. Tipper! Love from Memphis!~

My mom would brew coffee the same way and I also remember seeing the coffee bubbling through that glass bulb at the top.
I remember asking her if I could have a cup, as I wanted to be like the adults, you know how kids are.
She would load it up with sugar and milk. Tasted like a hot coffee milkshake. 😂
It’s how I first developed a love of coffee. I don’t put the milk and sugar in it anymore, though. 😉 😂

@@richardpowell1772 Leave the sugar out and coffee makes a great treatment for hyper-activity in children. My son is in his 40s now, but when he was a child he was badly hyper. I refused to give him drugs, but coffee, with full caffeine, and sesame seeds that I would put over and in everything possible, worked fantastically! I have recommended it many times and every mom had a great experience using them on their child.

@@richardpowell1772 My Great Grandma would pour a little of her coffee in her saucer and drink it out of the saucer, because it was too hot to drink from the cup. I've never seen anyone else do it like that and she'd give me coffee too! I was probably 8 or so and she'd put lots of milk in it and sugar and wanting to be like her, I'd drink mine from the saucer too. That percolated coffee is really good, the taste is a lot less bitter. Not sure where you're from but I'm from Memphis/North MS (so was my MeMaw).

We used an electric percolator for years and would fly through the first pot before work and often make a second pot. But, we found we were wasting a lot over time and decided to switch to a Keurig. Last year we had a crew in to waterproof our basement. It was very cold that day, so we decided to make coffee for the guys when they arrived. The Keurig only makes single cups, so it would have taken too much time. Therefore, we pulled out the percolator and made a full pot. The one young man couldn't have been more than 23 or 24 years old and he was completely baffled. He had never seen a percolator in his life. We actually had to explain what it was and how it was used.

Mom-mom percolated Eight O'Clock coffe from the A & P store and, in cold weather, served it to everyone old enough for both dinner and supper. I will never forget the day I saw a big white coffee cup and saucer had been placed on the table beside my plate for the first time. Like your daddy, Pop-pop always sat in the same chair before the T.V. in the dining room, with Mom-mom's wood rocker right beside it, and he had sat in rocker in the kitchen when he was in there. I can see those two rooms in my mind exactly as they were so many years back through imaginary tears of longing and loss, but also sweet comfort and joyous remembrance.

We used to have an elderly who had a mobile sharpening business. He had a very old green truck that he would drive around the neighborhood ringing a bell to let everyone know that they could come out with whatever they needed sharpened. We also had a milkman who left the glass milk bottles in the milk box. In the Summer, he would add ice to the box. My husband remembers a rag man who would call out “Ra-aags”, and people would take out their old worn out fabric things to him. Things are so different now.

I’m with Matt on the black coffee. Maxwell House, Original Eight O’clock, or Folgers. Also I prefer hot coffee straight out of a percolator. There is both a flavor and a temperature difference with percolator coffee. Further, Matt and I both are proud to have a custom fixed blade knives hand crafted by Spirit of the Outdoors, Justin Peden over in Mississippi. I bet our knives had origins in the same wood saw blade. I really enjoyed this conversation featuring Matt. Thanks for sharing. - Tennessee Smoky

I appreciate the sharpening demo, Matt. My husband always sharpened our knives with a set like yours, but I didn't pay enough attention. My dad always sharpened kitchen knives across a crock. It works, but I can see why this is a better way.

I remember my Grandma Myrtle using her little metal coffee pot with a clear top. I loved to see the coffee jump up in the little topper. It smelled so good when my sister and I would spend the night. Grandma Myrtle and Paw paw John lived near the zoo. I was always hoping a little monkey might get free and I could catch it. Crazy the ideas children have, huh? I like my coffee like my daddy’s mama though. Grandma Beat and I like our milk with a little coffee in it.🤣🤣🤣 🐒 ☕️🤣🤣🤣

In Cajunland where I live, they used to get up in the dark and roast the beans, then grind them in a wall-hung grinder prior to brewing. An elder lady I know used to have that chore to do when she was a little girl. On her honeymoon, she told her new husband, he'd have to make the coffee because she never wanted to have to make coffee again. I have two white enamel 2-piece drip pots bought at antique shops. They are pricey. I make camp coffee. Just put coffee into a pot of water and bring to boil, then fast pour into thermos to keep it hot.

My grandpa owned a laundry service in the 60s and 70s. Both my parents drove for him and since I was the one that would disappear and couldn't be found I had to go with them to the laundry until they dropped me off at school (kindergarten). Like Matt, I hated school.
As soon as I got to the laundry they would make me a watered down coffee from a big percolator with cream and sugar in a glass kraft peanut butter jar with a screw on lid. I still swear to this day that the coffee had a peanut butter taste even though it was probably washed hundreds of times.
But no coffee from the age of 5 ever tasted the same as percolated.

It’s hard for us old folks to realize that younger folks don’t know how a percolator works as this was our only method for coffee making when I was a girl and young woman. I was probably in my 40’s when the Mr Coffee came along. We now have worn out one Keurig and we are now using a different brand of kcup coffee maker. I did buy a stainless steel percolator too. I used to have the Melitta drip maker, which I did like also. In our camping gear, up in the attic, we have the aluminum percolator! Haha. So we are all set. 😉

I’m from the era of percolated coffee. I always new the “filter” piece as Matt referred to it as the “basket” that the grounds went in. Same thing though. It does the filtering too. It takes knowing how long to perc it according to strength you like it. It smells so good perking! Not everyone made “good” coffee in those days, lol! Thanks, Matt! For the knife sharpening too! I have the old good steel knives, not those stainless steel ones.

Coffee pots are the best. Mine is from a long time ago and is made from aluminum and I love it. I grind my beans and that is what makes the best coffee, fresh ground beans. My bride bless her heart does not like it at all but she tolerates my old timey ways.

Matt - I've been into knives and axes since I was a kid. Appreciate you discussing your techniques. Here's a thought: for years I didn't know the proper technique for splitting wood, let alone using a regular axe for chores around the house. I bet everyone would appreciate watching you demonstrate how to use an axe for various activities. For years I didn't know the difference between a regular axe vs. a wood splitting axe. Keep up the great work. Never saw those hand sharpeners either. Here's to an early Spring! Love you, too, Tipper!!

My husband likes strong coffee and I tried to convince him to get a Percolator and he thinks it would be to much bother. Matt filled the whole basket with coffee for not the full pot of water, that must of been strong. It is good you show these basic teachings on your channel, it amazes me how young people do not know how anything works.

Hi Tipper & Matt, it's definitely cold & windy here in Connecticut ! We had a snow storm last week! This video brought back memories of my parents, aunts & uncle using their peralators to make their coffee. The smell was amazing! My Dad used to sell cords of woods in his retirement years. He did that till he was 80 yrs. old. He had the neatest cords of wood piled up.😊He always had smaller pieces for campers! His customers loved him! I remembered him sharpening his axe & keeping his chain saw in good repair. 😊

Having multiple ways to make coffee is one of my life priorities. Back in 2021 we were without power for three days. This event allowed me to see where my weaknesses were in my preps and a way to make coffee was one area that I identified. I now have a percolator, two press including an aeropress and the Stanley press. I also have a small electric kettle that I can use with the generator power to boil water. I can go a day without food, but my life and the lives of others are at risk if I go too long without coffee 😂
I agree with you about the winter weather. It’s certainly not the same as it used to be. I’m in central/ noVA and our winter thus far has been fairly mild and will continue to be for the foreseeable forecast. I really enjoy the colder weather and snow!

Sorry tipper I got a call didn’t get to finish that comment earlier I was making but anyhow it’s been an awfully rough year, but I know my husband‘s not in pain anymore. He’s not suffering so badly miss him terribly the sweet, godly wonderful husband, father, and Papa but moving on from that with the help of the Lord is the best I can, or I should say moving forward I’ll never move on too much I guess but anyhow I love watching all y’all. It’s really been a big help to me. My mother and father are gone. Makes me feel like I’m going back home and Waze back home and memory. By the way on another note, I seen your video a little while ago, too about different names and Appalachia, one of my sisters was Glema, Faye, named after my aunt Verla Glema . But everyone called my aunt Verlie Verlie not Verla lol I also had an aunt Bertha that we called aunt Bertha Bercy with a Y and Alma that we all called aunt Elmi, so I totally know what you’re talking about with the hours or maybe the A’s and end of names Very interesting video that one to me. Also, I’m the baby of nine children mama and daddy had a large family. Most of my family. Call me Missy short for Melissa but a lot of my family called me sissy some of my great nieces and nephew still do and some of my brothers and sister still call me Missy, I didn’t really care for it when I was younger but you know as I’ve gotten older lost my mama and daddy it’s really become precious to my heart. I love my name and I feel honored when somebody calls me Sis or Missy because I know this is my mama Kind of did and it just makes it more special to my heart for sure I love hearing all of these different names. I could tell you about different names of my family that’s a lot of them passed on, but I have a cousin in Pikeville that her name is Gloria Fern, but we always called her glory Fern just so many different things that are precious to my heart. Anyhow, I could talk and go on and on, but God bless y’all keep doing what you’re doing. It keeps our heritage in our roots and so many parts of the south much love and prayers to all y’all.❤❤ 🙏

Daddy always used a "whet"(?) rock to sharpen knives, scissors, and I think I remember him running his fish hooks over it. I used to help him melt led & pour it into sinker molds...that used to be the only way I thought you could get sinkers!! And the coffee, my mercy, I grew up watching mama fix coffee in a percolator on the stove. I remember she'd pour daddy a cup and he'd immediately start drinking it!! I used to ask him if it wasn't burning his throat and tongue, but he'd always say "naahhh...ain't no good if it gets cold"! I found a camp set with a percolator at a thrift store a few years ago and it came with 4 cups. I have it put up in the kitchen, but I did use it a few times. I kept a percolator for a long time then got a coffee maker. Hubby never liked coffee, so I got a Keurig so I can make me a cup at a time when I want one. Now, since he had his injury, guess what he drinks for breakfast & even lunch sometimes?? Yep, coffee!!! I couldn't believe it!! Y'all, we've had high winds, Temps of 14° but feel like -4°! It's gotten a little bit warmer today, 20's, but we still have snow on the ground. Supposed to get up to 60° by the end of the week! Ain't that crazy??? Love & prayers for the soon coming "curtain climbers", Granny, and all the family from VA! (Don't know why daddy called kids curtain climbers...we never climbed no curtains that I remember! Lol!) Blessings!! 💗
