  • We spend our last day in Ireland railfanning the trains of Dublin. We start with action on the Dublin-Belfast main line capturing the DART EMU’s at various locations plus some DMU’s and the Enterprise trains to/from Belfast. We then head west of Heuston Station in the mainline at a few commuter train stops getting numerous DMU’s and the Cork push pull expresses. We finish the day getting more action on the Dublin-Belfast main with those classic Class 8100 EMU’s among other trains plus a steam finale on a special Dublin to Dundalk train. This capped off a fabulous visit to Ireland.

Answers to a couple of your questions and a couple of bits of information for anyone interested.
The Dublin - Belfast services are operated by formerly De Dietrich Favourvaire now Alstom push pull set + 201 loco.
The body of water beside Malahide station is Malahide Estuary and the line runs north out of the station across the Malahide Viaduct to the other side of the estuary.
The DART line from Dublin Pearse to Dun Laoghaire was the very 1st suburban rail line in the world, as the Dublin to Kingstown Railway. Making Dublin Pearse the 1st suburban rail terminus too, then called Westland Row.
The non powered cabs on the Cork and Belfast trains you compared with Amtraks cabbages in Ireland are known as DVT's (Driving Van Trailors).
For anyone in Ireland looking to rail fan, the booklet the driver who gave the info about the steam train was holding is called the weekly circular, as special train movements (steam, maintenance of way trains, railtours, extra services etc) are listed in this booklet, if you know any Irish Rail employees ask them to let you know when interesting movements are published in the circular.
    Irish Rail loves GM's!
This all stems from the very 1st diesel loco's Irish Rail ever bought, the Metropolitan Vickers 001 or A class loco's, which were fitted with the infamously unreliable crossley engines, these were so poor that after only 5 years in service Irish Rail began to refit all 001's with EMD power plants, the reliability of these ment all Irish Rail loco's since have been EMD's. These being the 121, 141, 161, 071 and 201 classes.
121 class was an EMD road switcher, 141 class were GP9's, 161 class were GP38's, 071 class are SD40's and 201 class are F59 PHI's all regauged and regeared for mixed traffic operations.
As for you seeing the class 8100 EMU's running again, they are approaching catch them while you can status, Irish Rail currently has an order for 195 Dart+ (Not classified yet) coaches as part of the DART extension taking over the Dublin to Drogheda/M3 Parkway/Hazelhatch services. These new DART units will replace the 8100's and also free up the 29000 and 22000 DMU's currently operating the Dublin Commuter services.
As for you being the only trainspotter for the steam train, most Irish trainspotters would have been at either Connolly or Dundalk where they would get a chance to photo the stationary loco up close.
If your ever back in Ireland, a good website for special trains in Ireland to keep in mind is 'Railway Preservation Society of Ireland' (RPSI). They operate all steam and diesel railtours of Irish rails and all scheduled tours are listed on their website.

You know what’s good to see? The discipline and respect throughout the system. Well maintained equipment. Well maintained and groomed rights of way, and the absence of trash and dumping along the tracks. Freedom of movement is something we take for granted, yet abuse, while others respect. Sad.

Well us Irish are known for being welcoming and friendly, also most Irish Rail staff are true railway people and love to chat with other railfans. Its not just with the staff either, the company itself is very media friendly and welcome the cameras.

@@3985uprr i watch a number of US railfans including yourself and alot of the train crews seem friendly and wave or say hello to rail fans. I do agree with you that the freight railroads themselves only care about profits, in my opinion they are happily destroying the american rail system in the name of precision scheduled railroading thats not schedualed or precise lol.
Precision scheduled railroading is supposed to be what you seen in Ireland, regularly scheduled services that operate to the timetable schedule which is why the driver you met was able to let you know the Freight was coming through at a certain time. Hope some American rail road execs see your video and see a friendly outward public image benefits your staff and company.

I loved the trains, the friendly drivers, the scenery, and how clean the stations were. I thought you would have visited Limmerick Junction. At the horns sounded like actual horns as opposed to British rail where the horns sound like a moose with a head cold. I'm not surprised that no one turned up for the steam train viewing. But there are trainspotters who love to go clagging.

I only noticed one. With the steam train, I saw no hint of expectancy for this. Unlike the USA where it’s a madhouse for steam, it was nice to have the space all to myself.

    • @AlanKSimulations
      @AlanKSimulations Рік тому +1

Railfanning is popular in Ireland and growing in Ireland but generally tends to be mainly done outside of the congested DART network and most photos are taken between stations as trains running through the Irish countryside make amazing pictures.
As for with the steam train, its not as big a deal in Ireland as steam regularly runs on the mainlines, the rarity of steam on US mainlines creates the madness you guys are used to, any rail fans out for that steam movement would have been at Connolly to get it departing, Dundalk to get arriving or along the north Dublin coast north of Malahide to picture it moving along the Irish sea coast. The main catch to an Irish rail fan for that steam train would have been it crossing the Boyne Viaduct north of Drogheda.

@@3985uprr they usually run out of either Pearse and Connolly which makes it easy to see them in the leap card zone which is very handy. Fair play to the driver letting you know about it and the freight train.
For yourself or anyone reading that would like to see steam on mainline rails, the RPSI run steam 'Santa Specials' for kids and families in December, the easter bunny specials Easter weekend and it usually runs 2 summer steam weekends during the summer. They also run diesel railtours which is usually a 22000 or 201 + MK4 set which tour different historical rail location.
There is also the 'Belmond Grand Hibernian' which is ran a number of times a year using preserved Mk2 coaching stock and 201 loco, eagle eyed viewer will have noticed the 1st 201 class seen in your vid, number 216, was a different colour to all other 201's, 216 is in the Belmond livery.

A lot of Irish rail stock requires heavy maintenance and mid life servicing. You will have picked up that with some of the diesel engine noise. We have sweated the assets beyond most countries especially the 29000 suburban stock. The Enterprise stock is due for complete replacement and is entering the tendering process. Another UA-camr posted a good overview of future investment around Dublin. Might be of interest: ua-cam.com/video/con3UmkWiA8/v-deo.html
