I was there, 17 years old. Outside the Kop in the crush trying to get in, someone told a policewoman her horse looked knackered. She didn't miss a beat, "you'd be knackered if you'd been between my legs for two hour." YNWA

Every year on March 16th I remember this unforgettable match. I remember the day well. Leaving my office in the city centre early. Getting to Anfield at 5.30. The gates closed at 6pm. Keegan scored after 72 seconds. 51 mins, Bathenay with a magnificent leveller, Ray Kennedy scores 59 minutes. 84 mins, and Davie Fairclough runs 30 yards and those of us in the Kop virtually sucked the ball into the net. Pandemonium ! Bedlam ! The ground exploded ! Greatest game ever seen at Anfield ! 16.3.77.

It was the Greatest game ever seen at Anfield for many, many years, but I reckon it has been joined recently by the Barcelona Semi-final and The Dortmund game in Klopp's first season.
I watched the St Etienne game on a little black and white telly on Warwick Street in the South End. My brother had gone to the ground but it was a lock out. He came home about 5 minutes before the KO.
Most exciting 90 minutes of my life ever. I hope to God my wife doesn't ever see this. ;)

Worth mentioning the reaction of rocheteau when his goal was disallowed for offside. It must have been close but neither he nor any other players surrounded the ref in a threatening manner as we see so often today. What a great team St Etienne were in every sense.

    • @danilosantana991
      @danilosantana991 Рік тому +2

Rocheteau lives just down the road from where my wife grew up in South West France. He is seen around by people in the local area. He has always been on the left as a strong socialist, which definitely meets my approval and I would imagine most of Liverpool.

Their equaliser really did swerve all over the place giving clem. little chance on it, it sort of boomeranged. The singing celebrations afterwards will always herald in folklore of this great club. The whole paddock side was even "up" and in a frenzy singing YNWA.

This game is was the best game of football EVER at Anfield. I went to the final in Rome and have seen many a glorious night at Anfield, but nothing compares to this, it was something special. I was one of those who bunked into the Anfield road end after Keegan had scored! My knee was deeply cut but i didn't care. The atmosphere was truly unimaginable, ask anyone who went. Faircloughs goal and what followed will live in my memory until i'm dead. Wonderful magical night.

Forty years ago today. March 16th 2017. What a day and what a night. Greatest match ever seen at Anfield. I must have commented on this about half a dozen times since You Tube was set up. This time on March 16th 1977 I was wandering around the streets near Anfield in a daze, having forgotten where to take the bus home, such was the drama and emotion of that match, especially in the final minutes minute when David Fairclough scored the winning goal. I got home in time to watch on the television again, totally drained. Anyone who was there knows what I am talking about. Simply unforgettable !!

I was at the match standing on the Kop, there were 10,000 outside the ground who couldn't get in. Each time Liverpool scored, we were launched forward feet of the ground to land near a crash barrier. The atmosphere was incredible, it was like every supporter's next breath was dependent on a tackle or an interception, or a pass being made. When the winner went in, the wave of energy was beyond belief. The noise was deafening.

People in France don't realize how great Saint Etienne was back then
    (Marseille fan here)
We just don't know squat about football history
    From Wikipedia
Liverpool's opponents in the quarter-finals were the previous year's beaten finalists Saint-Étienne of France. The first leg was at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard. As in the previous round Liverpool lost the away leg 1-0. The return leg at Anfield is considered one of Liverpool's most memorable European matches.[6] Liverpool scored in the second minute of the match through Kevin Keegan to level the tie. Early in the second half Saint-Étienne equalised through Dominique Bathenay. The goal meant that the tie was 2-1 in the French team's favour and due to the away goals rule, Liverpool needed to score two goals to progress to the semi-finals. Liverpool scored again midway through the second half to make the score 2-2 on aggregate. With 18 minutes remaining David Fairclough replaced John Toshack. After 12 minutes on the pitch, the "supersub" had struck... again. Liverpool went on to win the match 3-1 and the tie 3-2 to progress to the semi-finals

The shot of the Kop in the background when Fairclough scores is just so classic... what atmosphere! That's the biggest drawback to all-seaters, you don't get that massive concentration of people in one spot so you'd never get a scene like that today
