      I agree with you totally. It's special to camp out with the animals. Also, I got to see so many shooting stars that I never would have. And just being a team with them. They appreciate it when I'm around when they are at work. And I enjoy being there with them.

    I had a ginormous half-breed Pyrenees and he was the Security Guard of our family. You didn't have to lock anything with him around. I got him for $35 at the dog shelter. He was a therapy dog reject, reduced for quick sale. He was a diamond of a dog.

      Mine was a rescue dog And specials were running for $40 including being fixed.. I used to train Dobermans for years but this dog takes the cake! I also got another dog with him because I didn't want him to be alone which is a bully/pitbull mix and they are best friends! It's like they both compliment each other and loving both of them... they give back loads!! Can't go wrong with the guardian dogs unless of course you can't stand to hear a dog bark LOL

    Bear!? Yikes... Your dogs are gorgeous and amazing. I freaked out one morning when one of my senior guardian dogs didn't show up for breakfast. I frantically ran around the property and then to the back pasture where I saw him standing between the alpaca girls and an angry coyote who got his leg caught in the fence. I was so proud of our sweet dog. I had to run back to the house to get my boys and everyone followed except the coyote who was stuck. Whew... we usually have at least 2 working dogs but we were in transition as our dogs were all older. We've been adopting them from rescues and finding a good fit takes a little bit more time. We've been so blessed with such amazing guardian dogs and they are worth their weight in gold and then some. And like you, ours is family and we love on them a ton. Thank you for sharing how incredible your majestic dogs are!!! Hugs, Keiko

      There's a very good reason that it is so rare- look up littermate syndrome, its a horrible thing that many siblings kept with other siblings experience. It often makes for miserable lives for the pups involved and awful behaviors, theres very few people who have the ability to combat this and keep the pups separate enough so they dont experience that

    • @BigHornMountainAlpacas
      @BigHornMountainAlpacas  3 роки тому +2

      I will have to disagree with you Vic Toria, and I'm educated on what some people call littermate syndrome. Many, many keep families and litters with no issues. Also, if what you are saying is rare, almost the whole sled dog industry wouldn't exist. My two before this pack, where Great Pyrenees littermates (they also were part of this pack for 2 years), They were sisters who worked, played, slept and ate together into teenage years which is when they passed. It is not rare to have a bonded family pack of dogs who get along. It is not rare to have siblings get along. That is my opinion, so I decided instead of delete this comment, I would write back. But I don't want this to turn into a debate. Thank you.

I would have went that way if I'd had the breeding stock, but I am happy with the Great Pyredanes. The hybridization gives them much better health and lifespan than either breed on it's own, you have the size and intelligence, fantastic with kids, even better if possible with animals of all types and sizes, tend to roam less, don't bark incessantly at leaves, and like the Pyr, a coyote stands no chance against a Pyredane pack. Great guardians! My sister and brother in law have 2 Maremma (part pyreneese) guardians for their sheep and some smaller critters. Fortunately they don't have to deal with bears (it's not impossible) , but lots of coyotes, wolf, and snakes. They take their job very seriously besides being beautiful dogs.

    We have a couple of female Great Pyrenees on 5 acres. Unfortunately, we have neighbors who don't like the barking at night, so... we lock our livestock up at night and bring the dogs into the house. I envy your situation. Enjoy.

    maybe one day could you share a tip or two on how to "train" pyrs or do working dogs train each other or both? Could you share even one tip on what is most important humans help dogs understand that they need to do or not do and how to show them that? For instance licking ok, biting not ok. I got tackled by a pyr today and though it was the single most wonderful moment of my entire day I am supposed to be helping them learn to behave so that they can be adopted into family homes. How should I respond when 1 yr old pyr keeps mouthing my forearm and hand . I tried to calm, disengage and not reward with pets until he stopped but at some point this dog learned to mouth people...he is a rescue dog
    they follow your lead and listen to your cues so well

      Hello. I believe these dogs are such independent thinkers who just know how to do their job so we need to just support them in that. I use a lot of positive praise and just tell them what a great job they are doing. Lots of love, group play, and just letting them be who they are. It's nothing I could train them to do. And for me, I'm fine with my dogs mouthing me. They know to never bite down. I have a few that love to take my hand and it's an affectionate and playful thing, nothing that bothers me or nothing I'd want to stop. It's just how they communicate.

      @@BigHornMountainAlpacas thank you kindly for your time and attention !
      this is priceless your perspective. I find your answer fits what my intuition has been telling me about these dogs. I think in the life you provide them they can be themselves. So they dont have behavior problems. Also yes, the biting was never actually biting down. I am asking myself how this applies to the adolescents with emotional regulation problems I used to work with. Thank you so much.

      Hi. The livestock guardian breeds really just know what to do when the right environment is facilitated. They need fencing to keep them safe and also introductions to the animals that they will be guarding. It in their breeding to know what to do. I recently made a video called "Introducing New Animals To The Guardians And How The Bond." Once they bond to the animals it's very easy.
