Driving to Toronto via Highway 401 (about 300 km)

This is a video of driving from Rockport (a small town about 300 km east of Toronto) to northern Toronto (specifically the 401/Allen Rd. interchange). Rockport offers cruises on the St. Lawrence river in the 1000 Islands area.
The drive begins on a local road called 1000 Islands Parkway, followed by a drive on the short Highway 137, which connects Highway 401 with the US border, after which it continues as I-81. Then, we merge onto Highway 401 (westbound) and go all the way to Toronto. Finally, we exit to Allen Rd. (northbound), which is part of an urban expressway whose construction was mostly canceled, although a small part of it is still built to motorway standards.
This video covers around 300 km of Highway 401 in several sections that I filmed, sped up, and joined together (my camera's battery would not last through this whole trip if I were to film it continuously). This should be sufficient, since most of the drive on the 401 is quite monotonous.
This video also captures quite well (albeit in the dark) the collector-express system of Highway 401 in the vicinity of Toronto, which at some points makes it one of the widest roads in the world. It is quite interesting how it slowly grows from a 2x2 motorway to the monster that it is in Toronto.
This video was actually made at about the same time as my "Driving to Ottawa/Gatineau via Highway 416" video (it's from the same trip), but I was just too lazy to get to it in time. As a result, it is also somewhat poorly made and has some camera shake issues, since I didn't have a mount for it. The dirty windshield problem is made worse by the fact that there is permanent spray paint on it, which only becomes visible when the sun is shining directly at it.
The music is:
September - La La La
Bob Sinclar vs. Fireball - What I Want
Bob Sinclar vs. Craig David - World Hold On vs. Hot Stuff
I've been on this road in 2004. It was a great video, Thank You for bringing back the memories.
thanks for this - you're good driver! I drove this route long time ago and your video helped refresh my memory for some writing I'm doing just now. Cheers
It looks great in the dark seeing the stream of red lights ahead and then having them zoom off at exits etc.! Great work.
You'll have to get that section during the day as well one time!?
Love the 401 east of Toronto!
Thanks!
Thanks :)
I will try filming this section sometime during the day. I was actually thinking of doing the "Toronto ring" (a system of 4 highways that together form a ring around the city), although I might not get to it soon.
401E right outside T.O three lane pitch black...so dark even the side markers on my fender feel so bright...01 E38 255kms so far..well only once..just wanted to see how it feels...it feels awsum lolll.....but yah my favorite highway especially at night!!! GO highway of heroessss
That was pretty cool! You flew right past where I live(Kingston) and then my hometown(Port Hope)!
Great video(music sucked though, just not my kind of music). What the heck is in Rockport..lol!
Thanks for the great video!
Six flags is in Queensbury that's we went there and it was so much fun riding rollercoasters and water slides.
Thanks, the ones coming up will hopefully be in HD quality :)
Thank you :)
Thanks :) The names of the songs are at the end of the video's description.
I usually use Ulead VideoStudio to fast forward the video. It can also be done with Sony Vegas, but it's not as straightforward. Thanks for the comment.
It's somewhat of a problem in North America in general, but then again, 120 km/h is fine for the left lane in a 2-lane setup, because the right lane is flowing at around 100 km/h, which is the limit. If the right lane is flowing close to 120 km/h then you're right, you have no reason to be in the left lane. As long as you overtake in the left lane and come back to the right lane (if there are only 2 lanes), it's fine.
lol stupid me the songs were on the Show More button on the Video Description, never mind all :x
After six flags, we took interstate 81 north continues onto Hwy 137 north and took the Hwy 401 West exit toward Toronto. It was six years ago before Civic Holiday.
@jland904 Thanks, the song is "September - La La La". All the songs are listed at the end of the video's description.
Heh what you see here is not so bad :) The 401 has a lot of traffic (one of the busiest in the world in some sections), but this is why it's also so huge (widest in the world currently, AFAIK). However, this video was done on a weekend. During regular rush hour times - it is very difficult to drive through Toronto on most freeways. The 401 hardly moves. Although, it is still not as bad as many other big cities.
highway 401 parking lot! i spend at least 2hours/day commuting to work and home on the 401
Love the video. Love the song. Couldn't find it on iTunes Canada though. Where did you get it?
We did have one break, but also I split the driving with my dad. I was only filming when my dad was driving. It's not such a long distance though. Maybe 3.5 hours or so.
I think the person making the above point counted ramps too, in which case I believe the maximum is 22 lanes? You are correct though, the 401 maxes out at 18 through lanes with a 4+5+5+4 setup.
Great!
Whats the name of the songs?! I like it!
Great Video im supose to drive to Toronto from Chicago in a few months great city. By the way what song is that the very first song?
Thanks :) Just expand the video's description, all the songs used are at the bottom.
@onemanband08 Thanks. Several videos are indeed coming, with much better quality (1080p), but I have to find some time to upload them :)
what are all the songs that are in the background? they sound cool :D
High traffic like on evening :) Is it difficult to drive in Toronto on high times?
Great video, I like time-lapse videos very much. Could you tell me the name and artist of the song that starts at 3:15 in the video, I wanna buy it.
really nice video...what program do you use to edit the video and put music on it ?
Yes, indeed. Where have I claimed that this is a video of driving fast? The intent of this "trick" is not to create the illusion of driving fast, but to fit a 2-hour footage into a 10-minute video :)
See the video description.
could someone tell me the name of the song playing in the begining of the video please !!
It's east of Gananoque.
👍🏻
@ProWrestlingProvider They are building new rest areas. There are like 2-3 open for now but they're totally rebuilding all of them.
