I wish I could go back to the kid I sold my 92' ford explorer sport to....and buy it back and drop one of these in it. It was a great little truck...it was a tank in the snow/mud. I put a lot of repairs and TLC into it, then a mechanic broke off a spark plug in the cylinder head and goofed up the engine.... I would have kept it, but I inherited my dad's full size chevy truck (he could no longer drive due to his health). My "dream" rig with this engine would be either an old 60's/70's Ford Bronco or an International Scout. I had both as a teenager....the Scout was a rusty piece of crap.....but man was it a fun 4x4 to have:-).
Does this r2.8 use the same adapter plate from a 5.9 & 3.9 cummins diesels? What 5.9 parts work on this engine? Is this engine manufacturered to maximize profits on adapters & mounts?
The 2.8 is a completely different engine architecture from the 4BT and 6BT. It has already been used in construction equipment prior to being sold to consumers. Cummins does not sell motor mount swap kits, so I don't know where you would get the idea that they are trying to nickel and dime you with mounts and adapter kits. It’s a great engine you can put in whatever you want, but like all engine swaps, you need to make or buy the mounts to make it work in your vehicle.
cardesinr the problem with this new engine is the soaking one takes after they buy it with the add-ons ... not worth buying when it's a blank check. The 4bt is far cheaper to build a do any conversions with.
I would like to see an example of a common automatic and manual installation. Maybe recommend what options would be good if you went with all new stuff. Adapters, torque converters, installation and such. I struggled with that a bit on my last engine swap. first one. I love that you made such a plug and play diesel engine and I would have used this in my last project had it come out in time.
I would love to see the biz analysis that said "lets make sure its NOT a GM or ford bell housing. That will sell so much better." This engine is only missing 2 things: a sane bell housing pattern, and more widespread Ca or EPA approval. I wish cummins would care about either one.
Company suggestions would be helpful...have you guys had any experience with Axis Industries USA? Looks like some pretty solid solutions, but confirmation could prove helpful from anyone who may have had some hands on experience with some of their equipment. Btw, thanks so much for sharing these vids along with knowledgeable experience.
This engine is mated to a JC538, 5 speed manual transmission in a Foton Tunland overseas. As Getrag is one of the world’s largest suppliers of passenger car and commercial vehicle transmissions, we’d have to assume they have multiple bellhousing designs.
CumminsEngines could one source a getrag trans for it? I know forf has been using getrag for years.. Starting with the lincoln ls i think.. And now mustangs..
Well after talking to some prick at Cummins today to find out what to do in a situation where the alternator or p/s pump goes out .... can I get at local parts store etc. basically if I’m in bfe which is where people in the Offroad community usually are a Cummins store might be a little harder than a auto parts store to find. His answer... basically read what’s offered and I’m screwed on the rest! (In a number of words) 😡

I remember first hearing about Cummins' R2.8. I'd like to eventually see this engine offered on small trucks and SUVs.
As soon as the prices drop there will be one replacing the LS in my 87 s10 blazer 4x4. Funny the stock engine in it was a 2.8.

I am looking to put one of the r2.8s in a 72 chevy c10 . Is there any info on this adaption to the r2.8 to the 72 ?

What type of motor mounts are recommended? Sema approved is great but would motor mounts like the ones from Advanced Adapter be an ideal solution?
What was your motor mount solution on your earlier Jeep project?

Can the flywheel housing be removed, and replaced with parts sourced from a 1st Gen Ram 6BT to install your engine in an '85 Ramcharger?
Not compatible with 4bt or 6bt parts
you'd do better to use a 5.9 under the hood of a Ramcharger.
