- Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress CRASH LANDING
Andy Johnson discovers part way through his flight that the right main landing gear on his B-17 will not lock down. After a couple of circuits he decides to expertly set the model down and does it with minimal damage. Watch how he keeps the model level, touching down on one wheel and only rolling over to touch the right wing on the grass when he runs out of lift.
Filmed at the Large Model Association Cosford Show by Dom Mitchell for the 'Essential RC' UA-cam channel using the Panasonic AG-UX180 4K Pro camcorder.

That twernt no crash! Perfectly controlled and executed minor ground-loop. Bravo!
Skills saved what could have been devastating! Well done sir! I bow to your expertise! 👍🏻
That was an impressive landing. Could have been VERY expensive
_Was it just me or did anyone else have a vision of some scale american actors inside trying to wind down the landing gear on the approach_
I should have edited that in! LOL Cheers Dom (Essential RC)
didactylos4 diddy4 I definitely had that too 😂
had both right engines off before the props could h it the ground, well done
I was thinking that's not the engine nacelle that was smoking must of taken dmg on that side as well. LOL

A little D.B. Sweeney yelling faster, faster!!...and a scale Harry Connick Jr., throwing machines guns down the side.
6:49 Memphis Belle movie beginning... but without the explosion!
How ironic that the real Nine-O-Nine crashed on Oct. 2, 2019. :'(!!!!!!!!!!!
The Nine-O-Nine some years back also had a main gear failure and had to land basically like the model did. Sad that we've lost Nine-O-Nine.
RIP Nine o Nine. I saw that plane in 2019 when Wings of Freedom came to my town. I was one of the last people to take a tour before it took off that day. So glad I was able to
ya this popped up after watching a guy talk about it briefly, and i was like oh crash landing? cool than i noticed it was the same plane RIP
Kool B-17. First time I have ever seen Lancaster's!! Sweet!!
That Lancaster is pretty awesome !
I'm so glad that gorgeous bohemoth wasn't destroyed! When I was in elementary school I went to the Beaver county airshow outside of Pittsburgh PA because a B-17 was going to be there and both my paps were involved in the war with them. My mother's dad was there and we tried to buy him a ticket to go up in the plane but he said he spent enough time in one as a bombardier during ww2. Ironically that plane actually crashed during that flight while attempting to land. I actually took two pics with my 110 film Fischer Price camera as this was happening one when it was leaning to the left with the left wheel down just like that and I even said to my dad it's not going to have enough room and when the right wheel did touch it wasn't able to slow down in enough time before the runway ended! I snapped one more photo right as it disappears at end of runway and crashed over the hillside! Everyone was absolutely shocked at what had happened! They ended up rebuilding that plane at the Beaver county airport with countless volunteers over the next few years and then eventually flew away. Sadly that plane crashed again a few years ago because of poor maintenance by current owners and should have never flown that day! Several people died this time and I actually believe that model is a replica of that exact plane! I need to look at my photo again and see if matches up?
OMG I just looked it up online and that is a replica of the actual plane I saw crash in Beaver county as a kid and just crashed last year in Connecticut killing I believe 7 people onboard as well as several on the ground! I can't believe it I'm actually in shock right now! I actually got to see it fly one other time as it happened to fly over my parents house not far from where I saw it run off the runway as a kid! I happened to be visiting and I heard it's unmistakable sound and we went outside catching it fly over almost like it was circling that airport to make a landing? My brother happened to be at his house about 2 miles away and actually recorded a video of it Flying above and not knowing my father and I just saw it he sent me the video knowing my love for the plane! I'm actually building a replica of "Lil Patches" my paps plane during the war. I'm going off of the few pics that my gram still has in a scrap book unfortunately they aren't in color!
Hey mate, congratulations to the pilot, that landing was really really AWESOME, love the channel cheers 🇦🇺
Very impressive Dom! That's what i call perfect landings! The skill showed in these 3 landings is wonderful. No bounce, no "rock and roll" during rolling. But B17's is a screaming landing!
Beautiful and iconic aircraft - thanks for sharing
That Lancaster buzzing the field was so awesome. Looks like a Dambuster coming in to bust a dam!
I kind of found the urgency of the two guys running out to the B17 funny, as if they had to attend to the injured aircrew on board.
Yeah
Superb piece of flying and a gorgeous model.
Wonderful models. wonderful photography - thank you!
Very nice Dom, scale is my favourite!! Pity about the landing though. Great job once again with a daily video!!
Always great footage
My god what a save. That guy is some pilot.
Nice one wheel up landing. Also fortunate that the right wing props stopped horizontally.
Excellent recovery landing, that couldn't have been done much better.
Excellent !
Great video, thanks so much!!!
He predicted the future, the exact same plane too..
Oh, damn your right
I agree
Of what
A very nice landing indeed, considering, great pilot skill!!.
OUTSTANDING LANDING!!! THE PILOT SHOULD GET A MEDAL!!! Many is a time I've been to the local model RC field and have seen some of the most beautiful planes crack up into a fireball because the pilot just lacked the skill to bring in an unresponsive or malfunctioning aircraft!!! Have built many RC planes with my father and man could he fly them...R.I.P Dad.
Still I'm sure he lost a few as well. With respect from a follow RCer. R.I.P Yummy Yum's Dad.

Perfect Landing...Daaammm!! Great pilot..
Im a CFI of single and Multi pilots. I will mail you your license..
simply amazing!!!!!
Wow, this was great. All the planes are very impressive. The slow motion was really awesome. First time I saw anyone do that on a video. The B-17 in slo-mo brought tears to my eyes with that landing.
That was a very impressive landing! But to be honest, part of me was expecting some RC ambulance and fire truck speeding towards the Fortress...;)
I think this actually happened in WW II. Seen in the original 1976 movie "Midway".
Been flying in 909 over 20 years, magnificent! Her paint isn't as shiny though... Thank you very much.
....
You good?
The funny thing about this, is that the real "909" had a controlled crash landing just like that. I guess the jack screw that raises and lowers the landing gear failed or came loose on one of the mains. I can't remember which one, though. It happened at our Guard Base / Sioux City airport on July 10, 1995. Somewhere around here I've got some really good photos of the aircraft while it was being repaired, including one of me standing on the wing leaning up against the very hot side of the fuselage.
Great job of flying no doubt, especially since it was done on purpose. Notice the skid under the starboard engine? This B 17 was built to mimic the one photographed in Tora, Tora, Tora. Fantastic pilot skill to pull it off!
Perfect landing
Seriously great save , great skill
Great piloting and a beautiful landing! What I find most amazing is how similar this landing is to the real thing. I just reviewed footage of "wheels up" B-17 landings. The way this plane spun to the right is identical to a "wheels up" landing on a full-size B-17!
Lancaster truly amazing model ,and truly great controling.
These kind of landings are far better then the crash video's that make up so much of the videos on UA-cam. Much respect to you sir! Was there a little fist pump and a strong YES at the end?

If it going to happen What a way to walk away with your Head up, And a bommer to still Fly . And a lot of Wows.👍
Love the 2 lancs and that 1 wheel landing. Outstanding. Any ww2 pilot would have been pleased with that...... As would his crew 😀👍
Any landing you can walk away from is a good landing
Spectacular fantástico 😎👍👍
How about some info on the Lancaster, who's plans, engines, weight, for both planes would be nice.
Pretty good safe! Just a bit of damage to the landinggear door maybe?
I suspect so Dutch. Only skill prevented severe damage. A full size pilot couldn't have done any better. Cheers Dom (Essential RC)
A full size B17 was designed to withstand these types of landings without much structural damage. No landinggear doors, and just partially subtracted main gear (like the A-10 has in these days).
I’m surprised the crew’s Engineer could not manually crank the gear down before landing!
I was just watching and them i realize how big it is near them :o
The LMA folks sure have cool aircraft. In the majority of the videos taken at Cosford, they are always fighting a crosswind coming at them from across the runway. Have the wind patterns changed since the RAF field was established?
It was that B-17 landing from Tora Tora Tora
Wow ... Nice ! Wonder what scale that bird is ... *_?_*
Bonjour super pilote !!! Je pense et c même sur il faut avoir la metrise totale du pilotage pour réussir un tel atterrissage. ... Bravo Monsieur
Great piece of flying on all landings but especially the one with only 1 main landing gear. It looked like pilot used left aileron to keep the right wing from hitting the ground.
Pouso excelente. Cortou brilhantemente os motores 1, 3 e 4. Não houve danos nas hélices. Pouso impecável, compensando aerodinamicamente a perda do trem de pouso direto.
The Fortress crash landing in Tora Tora Tora!!!
Very experienced pilot............................
Epic
I have one question. Why is all rc B-17s a B-17G?
after all, it was a great landing !!!
I’ve been in Vera the Lancaster in canada
No crash just a two wheel landing Tora Tora Tora style.
Take off was weird in the beginning. Not in the Wind first go? Not enough Rudder?
Excellent landing. Minimal damage
Did you have a nice time at cosford
It is a vital thing to check wheel operation before flying.
I suspect he did but things can still go wrong in flight. No harm done. Cheers Dom (Essential RC)
The small crew in the ball turret just cheated death
great landimg @6:58
Motor?
Serious skills. Could of been pricey. Makes my flying look very 3rd rate :)
Techy Las Yeah. I practice by belly landing every so often on my TA152 and it looks nothing like that. Kudos to the pilots though!
You guys have watched the Memphis Belle
That Original B-17 this model based of just crashed today. RIP
Молодец радиооператор- посадил на одну "ногу" и удерживал равновесие максимально долго- орёл! Спас модель от серьёзных повреждений!
I'm just happy no one got hurt.
No chance of that. Everyone is standing well back from the flight line. Cheers Dom (Essential RC)
This reminds me of the film Memphis belle
That landing could’ve been WAY WORSE. That’s like 10$ of repair money! It could’ve been 200$!
Just seen the real Nine-o-Nine Monday in Indiana
One like equals one respect for plane
xXNuntinXx one like in 9 months means no one fell for your crap!
The wheel didn't go up properly
Can someone please answer the question: why does everyone run their model airplane across the rough grass when there’s a perfectly good tarmac 20 feet away. I see it in almost every video.
Runway is too far away from paying public at this show to see what is going on
This plane needs no runway ? LMAO
I want it
Not a crash landing....... Just a landing with a mechanical issue, with the LG.
Unfortunately, today (October 2, 2019) the original B-17G "Nine-O-Nine" crashed at Bradley International Airfield near Hartford, Connecticut with the loss of two crew members, three wounded and a total write-off of the aircraft itself. Prior to the crash the crew requested an immediate emergency return to the airfield due to severe engine problems.
October 2 is when it crashed
@@anthonytheriault7401
corrected .... unfortunately I switched day and month ..... Death toll has increased too to seven with eight wounded
👌🏻
😎👍👍
Me flying the flyingfortress in war Thunder
Me saw engine smokin'
I believe that the rough grass "take off/landing strips that a lot of these RC gatherings use, is BAD for the landing gear mechanisms. They can't handle the rough terrain!
the one was not a b17 it was a mitchel
Siiiiiii
*Soft Landing* 20 Lions
I was lucky enough to fly in the real "909" twice out of carlsbad ca. the original didnt look nearly as nice and shiny as yours.. 909 will be missed
i wont address what everyone has already said about the skill of the pilot on the very impressive landing...
as the say in manned aviation, "A good landing is one you can walk away from, a GREAT landing is one you can use the airplane again."
However!
To put "CRASH LANDING" in the title is very clickbaitey ! this was NOT a "CRASH"! at best it could be called an "emergency" landing.
lmao
Oh no 😰 not nine o nine it’s a nam flashback
How twistedly ironic & sad is the date of this post...
Sad that the real plane crashed
This reminds me of the time we were in Berlin these birds were flying over FUCK NEVERMIND IM 13
I wanted ---------------------
Alguien habla español :'v
Reminds me a lot of some landings after the raid in Nazi Germany.
