    It looks like a Excellent radio! for the price point, and for my needs. I just bought this radio based on your thorough review, I really like the external antenna hook up capability! sounds great. I'm in a rural hilly area and have to connect up a external radio to get only a few channels, do to surrounding hills, unless I hook up a long wire antenna and a grounded Loop antenna for AM radio. Thanks for your review

    I got my EP Pro a few days ago. I completely agree that it's not a band scanner's dream but reception is amazing. Tuning across the signal peaks takes some getting used to. Reception on my CC Radio 2E seems a bit better, and I like my CC radio SW better for band scanning. The EP Pro is a keeper, just wish it were analog MW tuning.

    I have this. Great radio. It's an upgrade from my GE Superadio III. The twin coil antenna was once referred to as the 'Justice antenna', after Chris Justice who developed the system. Lots of legal stuff resulted in CCrane claiming it. Hope I didn't open a major can of worms here. Love your videos!

    Thank you- I will wait for a bandscan but I am leaning to purchase a Pro. I like how it locks on the stations. In my stable I already have radios that fine scan the bands ( Tecsun 660, Grundig 750 ) and some analog tuners ( Grundig traveller ll, a vintage NIB Stewart multiband from the 90s and my Dad's early 60s Westinghouse ) so maybe it is time to jump to the 21 century! The sound is very good as much as I can tell. The Pro and the pocket Sony 26 are my next purchases. C Crane has a 60 day return policy.

    The DSP chip/Digital tuner..virtually same thing. How it was meshed into an analog dial format is quite amazing. If you tune fast on a digital tuner, it has that “muting” effect as well. In fact, no audio at all like a digital scanning etc. I love both, the accuracy and the sensitivity on the Digital ...analog style tuner. on this beefy sounding radio, But yes, medium wave AM Is nice and sensitive, and a bit more than the original, with much far less noice which is nice and clean to hear distant Dxing. of the “slow” tuning I used to to on those noisy analog tuner versions. In fact, it rivals my CC radio EP when tuning slowly, and the fine tune. One hell of a quality radio for less than $100 out the door for sure. 😮

    That's a squelch. It's used to cut out the hissing background noise. They use it on Walkie Talkies, CB radios, HAM radios. But the old hardware, requires the user to turn a knob to adjust how strong the squelching is. You can a actually turn it up, to the point where you are cutting out strong stations/parties. That popping noise, is the squelch kicking in. So it's automatically controlled.

    I read some reviews on Amazon stating that the EP Pro when turned off and then on again it does not automatically retune exactly to the same station and it needs some adjustment. This could be very frustrating if you woke up early and just wanted to turn it on and have it be on the last station you left it. Given the otherwise legendary excellence of this particular radio I’m surprised that it would be finicky.
    Have you found it to be true or is it an issue that has been resolved? Thanks

    That pop could just be the DSP chip turning on. The Sony ICF506 has a slight pause before you get any audio out of the speaker when it gets turned on. So it could just be how the chip powers up.

    I think it would be cool if there was a switch on the radio that led into 2 ferrite cores and you could switch between them to get even finer direction finding, or an even dumber solution, have the ferrite be rotatable via knob on the front

      I enjoy using this radio as a portable more. It is smaller and easier to zip through the band. The GE sounds incredible and is a bit less portable. If I had to choose one or the other, it would be the GE. Just because it is still running after thirty five years. Also has the most accurate dial I have seen on an analog radio to date.

  • @DriveInFreak

    Have they fixed the overload/saturation problem?
    If you are in a high signal aria at all (anyplace even remotely near an AM tower) the CCs are not for you. I want one so bad, but the CC+ overloaded so badly here that I'm scared to take the plunge again. Oddly, Jay Allen didn't mention anything about in his review.
    Also; did they implement a 9/10KHz switch?
    The external antenna switch on this new one does not disconnect the coil (unlike the original).
    They're supposed to have fixed the transient thump.

    • @todderbert
      @todderbert  6 років тому

      I did not see a 9/10K switch. Here is the number they gave me "Feel free to call 1-800-522-8863 if you still have concerns and one of our more experienced operators could reassure you or answer any future questions about the radios with their functionality. "

    I like CCrane's stuff for the most part. Although the dsp tuning trend leaves something to be desired when working am and shortwave.
    How does this unit compare to the old venerable GE Super Radio with it's pure analog tuning and beefy audio section?

    • @todderbert
      @todderbert  6 років тому +2

      The FM is superior on the EP-Pro. The sound is good, but the GE SR's is much more room filling :) I've found I enjoy using the EP to find faint AM signals with the manual tuning of the ferrite antenna. Plus it is easier to handle and move around with. I still use my GE SR everyday though.

    • @MrScottcollier
      @MrScottcollier 6 років тому

      I have considered getting the GE SR but the prices have come up to the point that now there is better cost return on newer radios.

    Are there any truly "analog" radios being made? Just plain ole transistor radios. Must every radio have a DSP chip in it? I want one of these but having that chip is a huge disappointment. Does the original model use a DSP chip? Todderbert? Any insight on this? BTW, Cool video as always. Thanks for the review.

    • @todderbert
      @todderbert  6 років тому

      The old EP is an analog style without the DSP. There are analog radios still being made, like the smaller Sonys P26,36,306. The Panasonic RF-562D I just reviewed is pretty sensitive for a pure analog style. Long range AM DX radios are all digital and DSP driven nowadays.

      Thanks for that. That's good to hear. I've seen your reviews on the three Sony's but was hoping to make the CC radio EP my newest tabletop portable. I will be buying one soon. FYI, the reception on the EP-Pro on AM is amazingly good, so good it bests my GE SR and my Sony EX5MK2. It is all about that fine tuning knob on the ferrite..makes the biggest difference. You'll see :)

    I much prefer the original EP. The only reason I purchased the Pro was because I broke the original EP I've had for years and the original is discontinued. The original real analog model is better than the new tuning on the Pro. Pro model is more of a hybrid of analog display with more "modern" tuning gizmos inside. The reason I bought the original EP was for its basic simple analog tuning. The Pro is a step backward from the original idea. For example, I prefer how the Panasonic RF-2400D tunes. CCrane had the right idea with the original EP for those of us that do not like digital stuff with our radios. Digital features are more likely to develop problems faster than simple analog. I had to return the first EP Pro I got because of weird continuous thumps and drop outs and they sent me a knew one. HOWEVER, when I turn the new radio on and tune to a station on AM there is a single brief drop out of the sound several seconds after tuning it. Nothing like the problem with the original one which was continues on both bands, but it happens. It's as if when the radio powers up and you tune to the first station it needs to lock on to the first station and it takes a few seconds before locking. I'm betting over time this will worsen. Yes, the EP Pro sounds as good as the original EP, but remember the old adage "when somethings is not broke, DON"T fix it."

    • @igregmart
      @igregmart 3 роки тому

      The replacement had same problem AND also developed weird distortion I do not hear on other portables (including the Panasonic 2400D). Rather than wasting my time with getting a third replacement I threw it out. I am giving up on the EP Pro. My hunt for a decent REAL analog portable continues.

      todderbert I love the infinitely variable nature of analogue tuners but from the first time I saw a radio with a digital frequency display, I’ve been hooked. I can’t even use a radio with an analogue tuner without having a digital radio at hand to know exactly what frequency I’m on. I’ve got to know.
      I have this fantasy that I win the lottery and can afford to design and manufacture my dream radio. It would have an analogue tuner with a digital display, no soft muting, a numeric keypad for direct frequency input, a huge external, rotatable, dual ferrite antenna and so much more. I have thought about this way too much.

    • @todderbert
      @todderbert  6 років тому +2

      Cool! Having options is the best thing we can ask for. Glad there are companies still doing different things..my favorite feature of the EP is that Fine Tuning knob on the ferrite...its such a beautiful thing. I've tweaked out so many stations with it..now using loops have expanded my horizon. Yes, having a digital read out is also cool...if the 2E were just a little less "fat in the can" I would use it more :)
