I hate it because the age of consent in Japan isn’t even 13 in most prefectures. In most places it’s been raised to 18 or older. The two prefectures where it’s 13 basically have like two people living there. Smh.
Hard agree. Legality is not morality. Laws are often old and reflections of racist/sexist/otherwise terrible ideas of the time and are often not updated because of the long legal processes involved. "It's the law" is a terrible argument when the argument we're having is a moral one, since laws don't always reflect current moral standards.

I am Japanese, about the age of consent thing in Japan, its not that anybody thinks its okay that the age is 13, and there has been talks about changing it many times and what it usually boils down to is "then what age do we change it to?" and nobody can agree on it be 16, 18 or even 20, and usually just settle down on "well every local government has made their decision on it why not leave it at that." Also its not like a bunch of 13 year old girls are getting married or pregnant left and right so, its not like there is major pressure to raise it for prevention.
Honest question though: Is Anime & Manga seen as Problematic or is it just a minor western perspective? I heard that a majority of Japanese don't even watch anime because there's no time for it. Manga on the other hand is read by everyone of all ages. But is it Problematic as this video claims?

Also statistics I really find it a bit disingenuous when you don't show actual numbers and trends in them, for example say the number of gun violence related deaths in Japan rose 200%, that would be about 4 people dying of guns a year. But you can still say gun violence in Japan has exploded can't you?
@@saifis That depends on the context of the reports. The term Gun Violence is also very obtuse, as it can mean many different incidents in regarding a gun-related crimes. Was it a home accident? Hunting accident? Isolated incident? Mugging/Robbing? Homicide? Police dispute Issue? Gang Issue? An American Army Base issue? There needs to be more context involved otherwise it's just a blur of a result.

It is not a defence against criticizing the work, just that you shouldn't force yourself to read it if it is something you know you won't like, especially if it's explicitly stated by the author.

And I think another thing that's important to keep in mind is that fanfic is fundamentally different in a few different ways, the audiences tend to be much smaller, they are being created usually by one person working alone, maybe you've got a friend or someone who likes your work helping with editing but even that is rare, and they're almost always not monetized. There are a wide variety of reasons that it makes sense to have different standards for fanfic than for published works.
Also gonna add to age of consent arguments: just because it is legal doesn't mean it is right. Psychological studies have proven that children and teens are not developmentally equipped to understand the long term effects of sex and cannot consent because they don't know what they are doing. It has been proven harmful to their development to engage in sex, especially with an older partner, at those young ages. Choosing to use that as an excuse is just legally harming children instead of illegally doing it

I personally think we should adapt and think of "age ranges" a bit more than a magic number that makes you an adult. I'm not a medical professional though, so I have no idea what developmental ranges that should be. But maybe if we provide better sexual education, including information about consent and power imbalances, we can help teens protect themselves by being better able to spot an older adult trying to take advantage of them. Maybe we should look at ranges like 18-20 amongst themselves, but no way a 25 year old should be messing with an 18 year old. 21-24 because that's just being able to drink and maybe getting ready to leave college or already have been in the workforce for a few years, 25+ because by then your brain is developed. Again, not a psychologist or anything. Somebody smarter than me has to figure out the exact developmental age ranges that people within that age range can consent amongst themselves

I'm someone who believes that a person shouldn't be canceled for the comments/jokes they make or media they create/consume. The only time someone probably should be cancelled is if they're actively harming others or speaking of harming people. And even then, they should still be given a second chance if they show signs of improving. People are people with their own viewpoints and experiences and they can still grow.

The thing people keep missing is, fiction can’t override an existing, strongly held belief, but if you have a gap in knowledge, fiction can fill it with misinformation. Everybody knows that murder is wrong but nobody knows a shark. That’s the problem, and that’s why violent video game comparisons don’t work here.
to add to that, at the end of the day, it's not the fictional work's job to educate you. jaws wasn't meant as an educative movie, and nsfw art is not meant to be sex ed. if a child stumbles upon say a fiction that portrays incest without explicitly condemning it, and they didn't have enough education about romantic and sexual relationship so they had to fill the gap with whatever was in that fic, it's not the author's fault but their parents for not having that talk with them. Same goes for even for vanilla nsfw content. if a teen is having unsafe sex because most characters in fics don't use protection, that's not the author's fault but the education system's for not giving enough sex ed. and now even author's are conscious of it and try to give as much warnings as possible, tags like "unsafe sexual practices" and "dead dove, do not eat" are here for that (for those who don't know, dead dove do not eat basically mean: this work contains morally questionable/reprehensible/wrong content, said content won't be explicitly condaimned if at all, but the author knows said content is wrong) tldr: if someone, and especially someone young, get wrong messages from work that was not meant to be informative, especially nowadays when author's tag and put warnings on the most "problematic" content, it's not the author's fault/responsibility, but the educational system for not already educating them on the subject. and that's why we should prioritize making sex ed available to all (for those interested scarleteen have very good queer-friendly resources on the matter)
The funny part about it being more likely to be killed by a vending machine than a shark is that it's all because of human vanity. People getting mad at vending machines and shaking them causing them to fall over. In the end, we are always our own worst enemy.
It is important to note that people have been afraid of sharks loooooong before Jaws, there are literally ancient myths about sea creatures based on sharks. Jaws did not cause the fear of sharks, and had no noticeable effect son shark populations.

They lay out how the decrease in shark population hasn't significantly increased since the release of Jaws, and that even the writer of Jaws said that he based the story on fears that were already common at the time.

Man I'm glad I'm not the only one concerned about cancel culture It always bugged me that cancelling someone sort of robs them of the chance to change their behavior and learn. I believe that *a lot* of people are willing to listen and change. But, I think *most people* aren't willing to listen and change, because they haven't deeply considered that they could be wrong. People don't automatically recognize that there is an actual problem in many circumstances, so defensiveness and insincere apologies are a major concern.
This might be the most nuanced video essay I've seen talking about this subject. I see a lot of takes that are either "fiction never has any consequences" or "eww this media/author is gross, right? let's all sit around and agree about how gross they are and how much better we are for hating them". It's refreshing to hear "media does affect reality but solving the problems it causes is not as simple as flinging hate at the creators/consumers and sometimes that hinders their mistakes getting fixed."
Which is why difficult issues are either brushed aside or hurr-durr'd - when you sit around agreeing how morally superior you are for liking/disliking something you get instant gratification for zero effort, meanwhile trying to actually solve problematic issues is a job for a lifetime and it may ultimately fail anyway. People don't like putting in effort for things that don't affect them personally, but they sure do like being with the "good guys".
An interesting thing about doing more research is that sometimes it can actually make something that looks problematic seem a lot less so. I was really disturbed the first time I heard the story of Shakespeare’s the taming of the shrew, as I think a lot of people are, but learning the context around it made me realize that it was actually extremely progressive for its time. It was basically a commentary on a certain style of comedic plays where the whole joke was a guy beating his wife into submission. All of the sudden a story that looked like it was about extreme abuse came to me in a story about saying hey, don’t beat up your wife. Even if she’s awful. She will come to love you more if you are kind to her. And while any given person may or may not agree with the idea that she ought to be submitting to him in the end, it is a big difference from looking at it from a modern perspective. Anyway I just thought that was interesting
I always find people that bring up the age of consent as an argument weird. Like, just because something isn't illegal doesn't mean it's morally fine. Legality and morality aren't the same thing.
And it is only half true. The age of consent is NOT 13 in Japan, the Prefectures decide the age of consent much like how the State law decides it in the USA, 13 is the lowest any Prefecture could set it under Federal Law. None of the Prefectures I could find data on have the age consent under 16. Tokyo Prefecture has the same age of Consent as California in the US which is 18

I feel like another reason people get so up in arms about fiction effecting reality is because of the whole "video games are making kids more violent" or "this music is satanic and corrupting our kids" purity culture. There's this whole thing where everything either has to be absolutely pure and unproblematic, or nothing is problematic in the first place.
There's also the wishful ideal of "Fiction *shouldn't* affect reality." Obviously it's... not really the case. It should be. But it's not. We can't have nice things because humans are humans and humans do stupid human things and make stupid human assumptions. The laser-focused pattern recognition we possess works against us and will make false patterns and extrapolate them into places they don't belong. It happens with taking things out of fiction, it's why conspiracy theories spiral out of control, it's why things like cancel culture can send a whole mob against someone completely innocent. Because as much as our rational mind can separate a boundary between reality and fiction, the primal parts of the brain are still stupid monkeys that can't tell a difference between a reflection and a photo. I hope that one day we can leave that part of our psyche behind us, because good lord are we not going to grow as a species as long as our ancient survival instincts actively work against our society and world evolving so much faster than our squishy processor up there. It's why social media is a terrible blight that causes people to actively *regress* socially, because humans just are NOT designed to handle how the worst parts of our psyches can easily be brought out online.

I have a friend in Japan who has been a victim of sexual harassment from a young age and she's never persued anything against those people because of a: the shame culture and b: how unfortunately common it is. Now it is getting better, and by the time I went to high school in Japan, things were much better. But that doesn't mean the entire culture is without critique. Also, I know this is way to late and you'll never see it, but James Somerton's video on JKR is really good. It makes the whole thing a lot sadder to me to think about the trans people that felt utterly betrayed. And also yeah, go piracy!

The age of consent in Japan is not 13 idk why people always get that wrong but no one under 18 can walk into an adult store, or go to a AV shop if they are under 18, or even 20, etc. ALL the same rules apply. There are many efforts to raise the minimum age, its not just accepted in society or something like that.
I think the reason plenty of people get it is because of the constant spreading of that misinformation. Even searching up what Japans age of consent is it says 13. And even me myself was confused for the longest time about what Japans age of consent was, as plenty of people were saying that the age of consent was 13 in general,that the age of consent differed depending on the region of of where you were at in Japan or that 13 was the age of consent for teens aged 13-17 and the that the general age of consent was 18. it's only some areas with the 13 age of consent in major cities and like a lot of prefectures in Japan it's 18 but it can go as low as 16 if there is parental consent.
Instead of saying, "I cannot be held responsible for information I don't know," you should've said, "I am not responsible for the money after it leaves my hands." It's something a lot of people tend to confuse when it comes to giving money. They see giving a street guy money as supporting a drug habit, meanwhile they just came out of a liquor store and are going to be having boxed wine for dinner. There's this classism, entitlement and delusions of grandeur when it comes to homeless/poor people doing anything the non-homeless can. Like, I remember reading this story on Tumblr about a pair of kids in a nearly-on-the-street family: the younger, autistic brother worked his ass off for months to buy his sister a 3DS for her birthday. They decided to try it out outside, on their own stoop, when a neighbor caught them and berated for having "an item of luxury" without knowing the context. It was earned through hard work but because poor equals, living on the street or dressing in rags, these kids weren't allowed to have an expensive _toy._ The autistic brother was reported to have fallen into a depression and I've never seen any updates. I hope he recovered, but I can see how he would probably grow up neglecting himself/his needs or never buying anyone a gift again after being traumatized like that. Anyway, the lesson I'm trying to convey is: it's not your responsibility to feel guilty for how a pervert used your money for evil.
Fair point, however I think the point she was trying to make was that she spent time and money on a show she didn't know was made by someone terrible. Think of it being like someone well intentioned donating to a charity that claims to aid people, let's say a charity that intends to help Autistic people, and tells their friends about it, but then it turns out, that said group was a branch of Autism Speaks, and that money was used promoting anti-vax and ablest bullshit. Hypothetical person feels bad that they entrusted their money to that charity and recommended it to their friends, but they were under the impression that they were helping at the time. But they can't blame themselves for not knowing what was going on. All they can do now is tell their friends what happened, and move on.

If a politician says that they specifically want to do some thing and in order to do it they need your help to get elected, that will include contributions to their campaign. Typically that comes in the form of financial contributions. So if they say they’re going to do something that’s harmful to a group of people and they need your support to do it and you support them by giving them money, guess what that means?
I appreciate the video and agree with most things. The main thing I don’t agree with is the holier than thou attitude exuded when asking the question “why would you continue to love something after discovering how awful the creator is?” I can’t help that I adore Rurouni Kenshin and Harry Potter. When I found out about the Rurouni Kenshin author I was heartbroken and afraid to rewatch the show and have something that used to be so enjoyable for me be tarnished. I rewatched it and it was tarnished, but not enough that I didn’t still love what is great about Rurouni Kenshin. I realize that all I can do is not directly monetarily support the author, but I will not just cut these works out of my life forever, as I literally find the Harry Potter movies soothing and comforting. I didn’t appreciate the being made to feel “not good/moral enough” to just completely drop some of my favorite media ever. I can go out and look for and support non problematic content while still enjoy a limited consumption of the problematic content that I fell in love with before discovering the truth about the creators.

I think sometimes what hurts people the _most_ about realizing that one of their favorite creators is a scumbag, is that you look at the media they made, some of which might've been instrumental in teaching you some of your own values, and you wonder... how could they have made this, and still not understood how to be a good person? some of the stuff you learned from their work helped make _you_ a good person... how did _they_ get it so wrong?? it feels like a betrayal, because their work led you to believe that they'd know better. that they'd be better people than they are. the term "death of the author" is often misused, and this is something else that the video didn't mention, which I wish it had. "death of the author" also means that whatever is in the text, is in the text, regardless of author comments or stated intentions. so, taking J. K. Rowling as an example... if something inside of Harry Potter seems to promote anti-discriminatory ideas, like the idea that magic users born to non-magical families are just as good at magic as anyone else, then that's objectively part of the text... anyone can understand that message when they read it. but so is Hermione's crusade to free the Hogwarts house elves, which is portrayed as silly, because the house elves actually like their enslavement as long as they aren't literally physically abused. they have some sort of magical compulsion to fulfill that enslaved role, so they're actually happier if Hermione just leaves their situation alone. which... sounds for all the world like the kind of rhetoric that white slave owners used to use to justify their keeping of black slaves. it is, at the very least, a really bad point to try and make. and on top of that, Hermione's pursuit of activism on behalf of downtrodden people, is portrayed as a universally silly concept that isn't worth the effort that vocal activists put into it. both of these messages are simultaneously and objectively in the text, there to be found whenever you read it, always. even if the author were to make a statement that she didn't intend for the harmful stuff to be there. if it's there, it will be found by readers who don't know or care that she said that, in the future. in this case, "death of the author" means that she can't retcon what she already wrote. her word-of-god doesn't matter if a person can still pick these themes out of the end product, for better or for worse. and, likewise, if a ten year old kid reads the Harry Potter series nowadays, and somehow hasn't heard of any of the controversy surrounding Rowling online right now, they probably wouldn't guess that the author has something against trans people. not on their own. ultimately, it's good that a kid wouldn't pick that up from her work, but those who do know might also reread the Harry Potter series with a newly more critical eye for the finer details. if there's a description of a woman who is supposed to be unappealing in the Harry Potter series, and she is ever described as "mannish" then that rings louder alarm bells now, to those who know. and it _does not matter_ if Rowling swoops in and says "well I didn't meant it that way" now... people who know her politics will still find it more distasteful in the context of the information we have. that is death of the author. it doesn't mean that we can just 100% shelve the author to continue liking what they made as though they had nothing to do with it, or as though none of their issues could've possibly wormed their way into the work they did. you probably didn't absorb their harmful views, because you were young, and looking for the good that the series actually did for you. that's a testament to you, but don't give Rowling more credit than she deserves, for your kindness. obviously, if you still want to just remember the fun you had with the series when you didn't know there was anything wrong with it at all, you're within your right to operate that way from time to time. but I do think that at some point, it's more appropriate to confront what you know about that author, and turn a more critical eye to their work... to re-examine it for things you might not have noticed. like, if you really want to just use the work for comfort and escapism like you always have for your own benefit... honestly, I think that's also fine? but I think that it is best not to put any more money in the pocket of the person who made the work, and I think it's good to freely examine the work in public spaces where it is being discussed, when you're ready to engage with it on that level. I think you can enjoy something as a comfort in private while also being critical of it in venues where it matters. people are complex, and capable of holding multiple positions on something at the same time, and this is a good area of media engagement to practice that.
Totally agree. I would also like to point out how the main focus shifts on the main authors, completely ignoring other people. Just imagine how much people spend their time in the production of say, a 24 episode series of anime, would @noralities (or anyone else for that matter) stop watching an entire series if she found out that someone in the cast like a sound director commited a crime?
i feel the same - an example i have is that it recently came out that a member of a band i really loved had been abusing and manipulating his girlfriend for years, and after i found out about it i felt too uncomfortable to continue listening to their music, even though i still loved their songs. however, i think its totally fine for other ppl to want to listen to their music knowing about the abuse, and i don't think i'm at all morally superior for not engaging or anything (i actually wish i still could without feeling really bad about it). i think it's fine to engage with content, even if it's by extremely problematic creators, as long as you don't give them money and keep the fact that they're probably not a morally good person in mind.

Cancel culture is super toxic, Ive seen people getting attacked on twitter in swarms just for liking something "they" deemed problematic, and it isnt even that problematic imo, this hurts ppl so much, being sent death threats, I felt so bad for those who are ostracized, cancel culture and twitter is the most toxic thing. Ostracizing people who do something minorly offensive is the opposite of making someone more tolerant.
There's nothing truly obvious. I love how people forget culture affects them and their norms in convos related to these things lol. We just have to hail something as objectively known or true, don't we?
This reminds me of an old thought experiment that, now that i think about it, i haven't heard in a VERY long time... There is an artwork created that, for some reason, no one knows who created it, but it is put on display for free to the public because of it's beauty/power/meaningfulness/etc. It becomes an international sensation overnight because of it's effect on people. Those who see it in person are moved in unbelievable and dramatic ways. And you only get the effect from seeing it in person. It's not magic, but the actual physical experience of seeing it directly with your own eyes that brings about the effect. Viewing it online or seeing pictures has some effect, but comparing that seeing in person is a bit's akin to saying a person in the path of a tsunami experiences moisture. Millions of artists become hugely inspired by it, people are brought out of depression into joy at its sight, anyone seeing is wholly enriched in their lives and spirit, and so on and so forth. A few years later, a person who is world known for having done heinous things comes forward. A person who has done things that make 1940's Germany and 1950-60s USSR look like a PG-13 Disney movie. They have irrefutable evidence that they created the artwork and make it known world wide Next, they demand that for it to continue being shown they must be paid a monthly royalty/fee/rent and they must be allowed to continue doing whatever it was they were doing. If they won't be paid, they'll dissappear, but also want the artwork back to destroy it and all copies/images of it striken and outlawed (assume they have the ability to do this somehow) as it was "stolen" from them and they never consented to its display. Assuming, somehow, that the "evil" this person does is balanced perfectly against the good coming from the work, do you continue displaying the work for people to enjoy and pay the person their fee, or give the work back knowing that it will be destroyed and that all references or copies of it will dissappear, never to be seen again? I realize that it's an absurd scenario, but that's kind of the point. I probably have not done it justice and I'm sure I haven't remembered in entirely correctly, but the point is to take something that in reality a VERY grey topic (much like whether it's grey or gray🤣) and turn it into a very bright line question. To force the situation into contrast to show that even in the grey-est of situations, everyone has a line that they stand on one side or the other of. In the end you either pay the person and enjoy the work, or you destroy it for everyone and the person stops doing bad things. There is no middle ground in the question and the circumstances are fixed and set. In the end the answer is, where exactly IS "that line" on the scale of grey where things tip from the artist being part of the work to being disconnected from it. If the work is inherently good and produces wonderful and inherently good things/effects, but the person who created it and will also benefit from others benefiting from there work is an inherently bad person and does and continues to do inherently bad things, do you accept the good with the bad or eliminate both? In the end, I don't know that there is an objectively or even morally "right" answer. Morality and "being right" are whatever society say they are. And from an objective perspective, which I am admittedly bad at, it seems both choices have equal weight. As much as I think a lot of people would like for there to be a universally agreed upon answer, I'm afraid it just comes down to what each of us is individually willing to give up or live with.
I swear to god we need more Anitubers like you. Most anime UA-camrs constantly joke about stuff like incest and lolicon and brush off anime's problematic traits with "it's just a drawing it doesn't matter stop being so sensitive about it" and it's incredibly frustrating when these big anime channels spread this toxic message around to their young and easily impressionable audience. Like NO! fiction affects reality and calling out anime's problematic tropes is NOT being some "triggered SJW snowflake" it's acknowledging that what they are doing is bad and shouldn't be normalized in society
is more effective to stop the market by not buying it, but to do that you need to go to the source, reach for the japanese audience and ask to stop consuming. the market influences the media, that influences the public and then back to the market, break the chain and they all cange to reconect, this time without the bad stuff
I'd say look at Mushoku Tensei for an example of the problem that she's talking about here. Unlike every other Isekai the Japanese boy sent to another world isn't a "perfectly okay super guy who'll be the bestest hero ever" The Main Character is the personification of the wrong kind of person that are popping up a lot in the anime community. He has a noticeable psychological problem that would normally get him put on drug therapy and counseling.(I'd argue Immature Personality Disorder caused by the childhood trauma) He also gets his ass beat into the ground over and over again because of what he does. Painfully. Deservedly.

Transphobia in anime is a real problem. It's frustrating and hurtful to see transgender characters being misrepresented or ridiculed. If trans weren't linked to actual pedophilia & misogyny maybe there'd be less transphobia, but unfortunately that is how reality is. For some reason a lot of trans like to dance nearly completely naked in front of children. There's a large amount of people who are conformist as hell and have a really hard time thinking about concepts like the spirit of the rules vs the writing of the rules. It's just where they are at with their ego development. They need rigid rule structure. They don't like to see the world in greyscale. They don't like to be self-aware. They just want a conformity to help them make sense of the world. These kinds of people are the ones you see defending a law because it's a law, an obviously absurd thing to do, but that's where they're at. Leaving the conformity stage of ego development can be very hard thing to do, it means becoming self-aware and actually having to think for yourself about very complicated issues.

Some countries might allow 16 so japan will allow it but no younger 16 it's cut off there. 13 is permissible in some prefectures for Japanese national only be it omeai or simply parental approved no exceptions, never foreigners.
@Lionard Kirsch It's not as common as it use to be but arranged marriages of that type still happen. Wealthy married off to wealthy. Most omei aren't real arranged marriages anymore either, in older people who have had no luck or failed at dating might sign up for speed date or cruse strangely enough they also have mass weddings. Parental pressure does play a big role in actual arranged marriage tho. And a lot of the ones you think are kids really aren't. There's a lot more what westerners would refer to as legal loli than you think.

I know lovecraft is like the most famous dead author was actually a racist but there’s much more to his story. Lovecraft was pretty much scared of everyone, he was paranoid, suffered a traumatic childhood, suffers from mental illness, sad love life, was poor, and died slowly from cancer. And the place in which he grew up felt like the only safe for him but as immigrants moved in he most likely felt that his save heaven was being invaded. Also overtime his views on other races changed .Sure what he writes may be way more hurtful even for his time but this was a man paranoid of everything. Also his uncle gave the cat that name.

There's always more to the story when racists make things that contribute to the dehumanization and abuse of people of color. Fear is a common root of racial hate, people hate things they don't understand. But be careful not to center the tragedies of a man who stood by cheering for the genocides of innocent people over the hurt and dead people his actions caused. Being hurt does not give you the right or any justification to hurt others. In fact the whole “he was probably scared that people were invading his safe space” is something I think you need to sit down and think about.

@@lucasyoshikawa5933 The Dragon Maid video was also good. the Isekai one had valid arguments, but Re:Zero wasn’t a good example since it’s a deconstruction of the genre and needed to set up the stereotypical parts of Isekai so it could break them down. I’m not the biggest fan of Re:Zero, but I can safely say that it’s the exact opposite of a power fantasy. It sucks because people are going to be using the Re:Zero part to dismiss her opinions on everything else she talked about. As for the Dragon Maid video, she didn’t miss, not once. I’m not saying that if you enjoy the show or like Kanna (platonic or parental love only) then you’re a ped0, but Kanna and Saikawa are sexualized constantly, Iruru too. Where I live an author was arrested for writing about minors being sexually assaulted in the context of a horror story. He was found not guilty and released, but the point is, no one was defending what he wrote, everyone agreed it was disgusting. People only defended the freedom to write and that’s it. Also, the fact that it was a horror story. What he wrote wasn’t framed as cute or hot. It was there to make you feel uncomfortable Edit: a lot of y’all are blaming the liberals or sjw’s or whatever but it was actually 30 year old moms that had problems with it from what I’ve seen Edit: Also I’ve been thinking. Watching this in 2022, the mention of Lindsay Ellis and Natalie Wynn as good sources for more info on JK Rowling's fucked up shenanigans in a video about how indiscriminate cancel culture has become feels extremely and depressingly on the nose. I hope Lindsay Ellis has had a chance to heal some after getting away from the meat grinder she's been put through for the better half of a decade.
What most shocked me is how tame and level-headed Rowlings statements are. If i listened only to twitter activists, I would think she is calling for exterminations. Turns out, she has the same moderate opinions that many trans people also have. But only some activists and sheep proclaim her evil, and somehow try to attribute to her statements a malice and harm that is simply not existent.

As one of the new subscribers, I can't express enough how important it was to hear someone express their discontent about media. Having shaped a lot of my opinions on "being one of the boys", it feels like I'm finally uncovering some ""dark and sad"" truth about what I'm consuming and how I'm ignoring some of its less-than-ideal to outright-disgusting aspects.

I don't think its an artists job to teach viewers that x and y is bad, and if its featured in their media, people should not be watching it if they don't ALREADY know that x and y is bad. Maybe the artist could say "x and y is bad please get out if this is not already thoroughly cemented in your brain." Because... there is still a line between fiction and reality, and you can feature "problematic" aspects in your work without ACTUALLY BELIEVING THEY SHOULD BE APPLIED TO THE REAL WORLD. You know? I think a lot of this discourse is reflective of the culture we've built around not talking about s*x ever (censored bc youtube) because, well, people ARE under educated about s*x and theres an absurd amount of people relying on things that SHOULD NOT BE RELIED ON to teach them. I mean, look at FPS games. Shooting people..? Horrible, OBVIOUSLY. But we've all been educated and can acknowledge that OBVIOUSLY this doesnt fly irl. The responsibility I think lies with how we educate people and not creators because.. frankly I think that is ridiculous.

In my country there are some podcasts that do talk about these things in animes (there’s also one that is fully devouted to watch and criticize really really bad animes, members are pretty masochysts), but i do agree there should be way more.

My voice is a pointless expression in an endless din, but I would point out that Death of The Author is an *analytical* technique, one aimed at removing the lived experience and context of the writer from the analysis of a piece of work. People can't and shouldn't just cite it so they don't have to feel bad for buying stuff from an asshole, it requires critical analysis and consideration.
I don't think there really is such a thing as ethical consumption. Everything is problematic on some level. There's always going to be something somewhere on down the pipeline, whether it be an offensive idea or an offensive person involved with the work, that you're going to end up supporting with your money no matter what you do. While I agree that criminals and pedophiles should not be supported, creating such all-encompassing anxiety in people for possibly supporting or enjoying something problematic isn't really the way to go either. I'm saying this as an OCD person that struggles constantly with "pure" and "impure" thoughts and agonizes over stuff like this until it sucks the joy out of everything. I feel often feel like I'm expected to be perfect as a consumer, or else I'm going to be hated, or my friends are going to leave me, etc. It's a horribly shitty place to be.
Have you seen the show "The Good Place"? It's a long series, but it has great themes about what it means to be a good person. One episode in particular is about how there's unintended consequences of a lot of our actions, to the point where buying a tomato or ordering your mom flowers can result in supporting sweatshops and sexist CEOs. I really recommend that show, it's so good. Anyway, the point is that you can't avoid everything problematic, but being a better person isn't about being perfect. It's about being a little better than you were yesterday. Working to self improvement. If you already do that, you are a good person.
I do appreciate you addressing the whole Death of the Author argument. It's supposed to be used as an analysis of a work, not as a means to justify enjoying it. Also, it's meant to separate intent of the author from what actually made it on to the pages. Like, Dumbledore being gay is never directly mentioned in the text, and is at best alluded to. If Rowling wanted to brownie points for having gay representation, it needed to be in the text, not some tweet on Twitter. That's how Death of the Author is intended to be used; not saying Harry Potter should be taken away from her because she did a bad.
I can tell that a lot of research and effort went into this video but you made a mistake in your arguments. 6:15 The PROTECT Act of 2003 was overruled. It was overruled because it was unconstitutionally vague, and so it has no legal value. This law was also made in 2003 when a lot of countries were struggling to find appropriate laws to cover the rapid growth of the internet. A more accurate law to point to on this topic would be the "18 US Code § 2256" which (to paraphrase) says that the depiction has to be to be indistinguishable from real children or adults for it to be considered an offence. So your point about this being unprotected speech is technically not true.
Your counter argument about Japan's lower rape count showing that its not what its reported to be is very concrete. Though, A Study done by Miltonn Diamond, Petr Weiss, and Eva Jozifkova called "Pornography and sex crimes in the Czech Republic" showed that in the Czech republic, after decriminalizing all possible sexual content, there was a rapid decline in the number of reported cases of child abuse. This study also Showed similar results in Denmark and Japan. So take that how you will.
Arguments like the ones at 39:55 are very exhausting to read, so I would also like to make a stronger counter argument against your "Fiction does not equal Reality" and "Media does affect Reality" segments. The 1st amendment was made to protect unpopular opinions, even harmful ones. This is a very political matter with a lot of basis in opinion, but I personally don't find value in allowing governments to have control over the personal expression of others in any situation, even when that expression is harmful or offensive. Only exception to that being is if the art being made causes harm in the process of creation. Though I do agree that if you find media that you don't agree with that you shouldn't support it, and even do what you're doing to counter said media. This helps society as a whole figure out what it wants by itself without giving more artificial influence to one part of it. I get that this is somewhat boiling down to "it doesn't harm children" and if you wanna make a stretch also "if you don't like it don't watch it", but I feel that it is important to tie this into a bigger picture. Also based on your video it doesn't seem like you completely disagree with me. Basically what I'm saying here is that the implications of a possible correlation between media and action doesn't justify censorship, and the people as a whole should decide how they want to express themselves and what expressions they want to support. This is partly in agreement to your point, but your point is about creators taking responsibility and being held accountable for their art and its more against certain types of media while mine is more welcoming to all opinions and expressions to be put into into the judgment cauldron of society.
Thanks for making this video, there were lots of really great points that I can agree with, and I think the "how to move forward" section hit it spot on the nose. I could also call you out for getting mad at people that don't do research (which idk why you would expect that from a 'normal' youtube comment) and then getting the PROTECT Act part wrong, but its really a common mistake, and I only point this out now because I find it funny xD. Though this video did get me to think about this topic and eventually help me come to my own conclusion which I can discuss... with no one probably, because i find it hard to think that anyone would read all of this hahah.
I really respect how clear and concise you are about your stances on various issues. Everything we see in anime and in media in general. I'm typically not a critical thinker, so your videos have really helped me reflect and expand upon existing opinions I've had. That game killed one of the first female protagonist not from an otome visual novel in favor of a "default status quo" male protagonist for self-inserting, waifu culture, otaku-pandering and fanservice for straight guys. And there's also the false advertising, because they advertised it as having a female protagonist, so I bought it super happy thinking I'd finally be able to play as girl in a visual novel not being a romance otome game. killing or incapacitating a female character in order to develop a male character is an old sexist trope very harmful for women representation in entertainment media and it's popularly called "fridging" or "fridge".

Feels odd to comment it on a video like this one, and a year after it's release, but watching back through some of your videos I adore how you out together your points, they're structured in a way that, while wholly accurate and true, is still entertaining and {usually} not too dark to have on in the background. And also just how affirming and sweetly you talk, it makes hard times a little bit easier to just hear little kind words like at the end of the video.
Danganronpa V3 explains the theme of "Fiction is not real but it affects reality" pretty well. Just because fiction doesn't technically happen, it can have effects on not only culture and people, but on the actors as well.

Media can very much affect reality, even negatively. For example, after the Game of Thrones-series became popular, a lot of people bought dogs that looked a lot like the direwolves in the show, because they thought direwolves were cool and/or wanted to be more like the Starks, who owned the direwolves. Problem was, the dog breed in question required a lot of care and not everybody who adopted one could provide that. So most of those dogs were returned to the shelters or flat-out abandoned (source: www.nationalgeographic.com/animals/article/game-of-thrones-dire-wolf-fans-buying-huskies). Media can influence large groups of people, even if doing so wasn't the author's intend. It's like what Nora said, "Media doesn't exist in a vaccum".
Making this type of content is very important for self-reflection in the community of people who enjoy Japanese media. Responsibly consuming even problematic media requires individuals to be aware and critical of what they consume, and long-form analysis like yours goes a long way to promoting that. Now let me explain, Krone's design is similar to an actual black person, and I've seen many of us that look like her. However, the fact that Jemima who is black, and Don who seems at least mixed or latino are not drawn with the large lips and nose of her is racist. They are all similar colors, Don a little lighter, but Jemima is the closest, but Jemima and Don are good, and Krone is bad which means they could be using the big lips and eyes as "disturbing features" to illustrate how "scary" she is. I also don't think it's accidental because of how the good guys are not strongly featured but the Krone is rather than making them all show similar features or slightly different ones within the same plain, but it also isn't her design that makes her racist. I think one of the things that might be excused in such a world (and I don't claim to say that it is, in fact, part of it... but merely suggesting that it is possible) is the fact that there may be magic to make such a transition less... stop-gap than our current, most-advanced process. In a world where magic is possible, an author could say that there's some magic or a potion or something of the sort that can let a person change their physical appearance or gender (given the abundance of transfiguration magic and shapeshifters in the series, I wouldn't put it past the setting). Of course, this is all speculation and hyperbole based on my own opinion of fantasy literature and other works (like StarFinder which has exactly those measures built into the equipment section of the game, potions that literally let you change your appearance and physical gender at any time for only a small monetary cost because of how scientifically-advanced the setting is), so it doesn't matter what I might raise as a counterpoint because it's not something explicitly explained in the text about whether it is possible or not. Also: Witch and Wizard do not exclusively represent feminine or masculine career paths (even though it is true for Harry Potter specifically) as most RPG systems and many fantasy stories I have experience with tend to use both words regardless of the physical gender of the character. Most specialist names for such characters are also gender-neutral; things such as Abjurer, Evoker, Conjuror, Necromancer, etc... are used to define magical characters regardless of identity.

I think at least some of the knee jerk reactions you might get are likely in response from a similar problem that other forms of media, namely tabletop RPGs and video games and even heavy metal music, received; which was the highly reductive: "Z media _automatically_ makes X group do Y or engage in Y behavior/manner." Like all things, all media is a sticky subject and not easily handled by most people, because the cause and effects of said media requires more than a Yes or No answer. Oftentimes, it requires more than even a Maybe answer. Hell, sometimes, it requires more than a sliding scale can show. In some cases, you have to start getting into the Z axis.

Cultural relativism is one of my hated defenses of stuff like this. Even if it were true (and it's often not), it's an explanation to provide perspective, it's not a moral justification in itself. And even if it somehow were, that can only apply if the cultures have truly incompatible principle values, which is rarely the case.

It's nice to hear this perspective from someone who was also once a fan of Rurouni Kenshin. It's been so hard processing what happened, and I still struggle today with the fact that I was inspired by someone who is undeniably a horrible person. I was in denial for a long time. I'm glad you got to come to terms with it, and I think I can now too. As much as I loved the story of ruroken, I won't be purchasing any of the mangas anymore or the merchandise... It's such a horrible shame...
I think you need to forgive yourself. Rurouken is still a really good story, just a really good story made by a monster. Not sure what I'll do with my copies, which were purchased long before the allegations come out. But maybe one day I'll be able to love them again.
If I had read Ruroni Kenshin, I think I would still read it, because I know personally never support or agree with Watsuki's actions. I would rather accept that this is something that happened, acknowledge it and enjoy the media rather than box off something I like since the actions of the creator were reprehensible. (*Should've waited till I saw the entire video, I think I'd still I'd like the story, but not in the way that would directly support Watsuki. But I'm just saying that I'd have a hard time cutting off something that I love.)

I’m in a fandom that gets a lot of hate from a lot of different people, they just seem to hate the creator for no reason, but there’s a character that is been said to be a child in multiple ways, literally describing herself as a teenager in the FIRST EPISODE, is in high school (at least able to go to prom), and has been called “little girl” by a semi-connected character, but is still shipped with a character that has been confirmed by one of the creators to be an adult. The fandom will stretch so hard to say “oh, she’s canonically 18” or “the creator never revealed any of the characters ages” or god forbid “bro it’s not real, plus they’re not humans so they must age differently”. Even is the two characters held hands in the latest episode, one of the characters died in that episode, and the other character had also said in his introduction that he is romantically interested of the character that died, and most likely that was to comfort him, because she knew that he loved the character that literally sacrificed herself to save the two characters. Also, the production team’s newest project has a voice actor that is most likely going to get recasted because he’s been outed as an “it’s just fiction” user. Genuinely want to see what is going on in the hater’s heads every day, also, doxxing ain’t ok. Stop doxxing indie animators edgy ten year olds.
Bruh I'm so happy that someone actually puts their points for the opposite side into actual reasonable and respectful terms. Tbf, I think going on Twitter to discuss this heavy topic wasn't a good idea. That wasn't the right move to have a reasonable discussion. I myself am an advocate for the freedom of expression of any artist. No matter how problematic or morally abhorrent the subject of the media could be. And as idealistic as it sounds, I wish to trust in the market of ideas of the general public to notice that the media in question displays morally abhorrent content. As for my personal views on sexualising underage fictional characters specifically, it's a bit complicated. I don't consume that media, and I do what I can to avoid seeing it as much as I possibly can because it makes me uncomfortable. How ever, just because I personally am uncomfortable by a subject, I don't want to go over the line when we ban or censor media. The connection between the consumption of Lolicon and it's causation of rl child abuse is kind of shakey. And the reason I find just a slight problem with trying to blame fiction for real world crimes is because I don't want criminals to have a scapegoat to attract attention away from them, to lessen their accountability for their crimes. To me, that argument seems akin to the "r@pe p*rn causes real life rape" argument, even though there's no evidence to back it up. At the end of the day I believe criminals are completely accountable for the crimes they commit, and blaming fiction could lead to a rabbit hole of censorship of media that wishes to explore taboo and sensitive topics. But that only applies to media that doesn't include abuse or incite violence or extreme ideologies in a positive manner. If there are media that that presents these topics in a positive manner, then I believe the creators should be immediately investigated. If you read this, thanks for listening.
Exactly this. There’s a tricky line between committing the act vs something that’s just a lewd fantasy. While there are kinks that are practiced regularly, a lot of them also stay based in fiction for a multitude of reasons. Anything from being impractical to perform, how the consequences of performing it severely affect lifestyle, to harming others or even one’s self. By the end of the day fictional versions of these fantasies are often the best or even only way to filter out or exercise these kinks safely (even if some of these people’s kinks bother me a lot). Again, this isn’t to say criminals shouldn’t be held responsible for committing actual crimes. Media that promotes harm should be held accountable when doing so just like you said.

Also I think her point was more to do with desensitisation and the idea that once a culture is so saturated with an idea through media (in this case cartoon drawings of children being molested) punishment becomes less severe because in the minds of the people this is something very commonplace and almost 'normal' when it really REALLY isn't, especially in Japan's case. You're right in an ideal world people could create whatever the fuck the wanted and people could come to their own conclusions, but heres the thing. A lot of people barely think about the media they consume, most people can barely tell you why they like something let alone if something is actively bad. People watch, not engaging beyond that meanwhile subconsciously becoming desensitised to some really awful things. I personally don't care if they were to ban loli outright in my country. I think it's fucked up and unless more research is done to prove otherwise I do think is does more harm than good.

Though in practical applications you and your partner had best be 20+ or you'll be jailed by the prefectural police with a nice lawsuit from the parents as each precinct has their own amendments and policing separate from the national police (even if they're 18 and they concent, their parents also have to in some cases... its complicated). Meanwhile confederates were hated in their time, lost any power back in 1865, and have basically been salty bitches ever since. My long and short: The best thing that we can do in situations like this is to simply not consume the product being produced instead of attempting to cancel the creator. By boycotting products we can actively dissuade certain things without overstepping in the way so commonly seen in cancel culture which leads to the ruining of people's lives. There is a fine line between enforcing the law and catching criminals and ruining someone's life because they disagree with you on a contentious topic. We can all agree that child porn in any context is bad, and as such should be reported to proper authorities, but it is the job of the LAW, and not the PEOPLE to punish criminals and wrongdoers. There is no point in having a justice system if we operate under mob justice.

I'm so sorry for what happened to you and hope you are fine. Media totally affects reality. I knew two boys from my highschool who were lolicon and would creep on 12 year old girls regularly. On a trip abroad, they also have been reported to hit on children in front of a elementary school. Truly horrifying. Sadly at the time I did not know about it and now, after my graduation, I'm glad to never see them again.
Krone's visual depiction is unfortunate, because she is a very well-written, fleshed out, intelligent, and nuanced character and you really do feel for her when she's quite literally made to be a sacrificial lamb. Hopefully the Amazon series be able to focus on these positive traits while getting rid of these negative stereotypes... that's assuming the series is any good to begin with and they don't completely botch it.

Yes, Cancel-Culture is bad; i think we can easily say this is an objective fact. I am Japanese, about the age of consent thing in Japan, its not that anybody thinks its okay that the age is 13, and there has been talks about changing it many times and what it usually boils down to is "then what age do we change it to?" and nobody can agree on it be 16, 18 or even 20, and usually just settle down on "well every local government has made their decision on it why not leave it at that." Also its not like a bunch of 13 year old girls are getting married or pregnant left and right so, its not like there is major pressure to raise it for prevention.

And I think another thing that's important to keep in mind is that fanfic is fundamentally different in a few different ways, the audiences tend to be much smaller, they are being created usually by one person working alone, maybe you've got a friend or someone who likes your work helping with editing but even that is rare, and they're almost always not monetized. There are a wide variety of reasons that it makes sense to have different standards for fanfic than for published works.

Psychological studies have proven that children and teens are not developmentally equipped to understand the long term effects of sex and cannot consent because they don't know what they are doing. I personally think we should adapt and think of "age ranges" a bit more than a magic number that makes you an adult. I'm not a medical professional though, so I have no idea what developmental ranges that should be.
But maybe if we provide better sexual education, including information about consent and power imbalances, we can help teens protect themselves by being better able to spot an older adult trying to take advantage of them. Maybe we should look at ranges like 18-20 amongst themselves, but no way a 25 year old should be messing with an 18 year old. 21-24 because that's just being able to drink and maybe getting ready to leave college or already have been in the workforce for a few years, 25+ because by then your brain is developed.
Again, not a psychologist or anything. Somebody smarter than me has to figure out the exact developmental age ranges that people within that age range can consent amongst themselves

I'm someone who believes that a person shouldn't be canceled for the comments/jokes they make or media they create/consume. The only time someone probably should be cancelled is if they're actively harming others or speaking of harming people. And even then, they should still be given a second chance if they show signs of improving. People are people with their own viewpoints and experiences and they can still grow.

to add to that, at the end of the day, it's not the fictional work's job to educate you. jaws wasn't meant as an educative movie, and nsfw art is not meant to be sex ed. if a child stumbles upon say a fiction that portrays incest without explicitly condemning it, and they didn't have enough education about romantic and sexual relationship so they had to fill the gap with whatever was in that fic, it's not the author's fault but their parents for not having that talk with them. Same goes for even for vanilla nsfw content. if a teen is having unsafe sex because most characters in fics don't use protection, that's not the author's fault but the education system's for not giving enough sex ed. and now even author's are conscious of it and try to give as much warnings as possible, tags like "unsafe sexual practices" and "dead dove, do not eat" are here for that (for those who don't know, dead dove do not eat basically mean: this work contains morally questionable/reprehensible/wrong content, said content won't be explicitly condaimned if at all, but the author knows said content is wrong)
tldr: if someone, and especially someone young, get wrong messages from work that was not meant to be informative, especially nowadays when author's tag and put warnings on the most "problematic" content, it's not the author's fault/responsibility, but the educational system for not already educating them on the subject. and that's why we should prioritize making sex ed available to all (for those interested scarleteen have very good queer-friendly resources on the matter)

It's refreshing to hear "media does affect reality but solving the problems it causes is not as simple as flinging hate at the creators/consumers and sometimes that hinders their mistakes getting fixed."
Which is why difficult issues are either brushed aside or hurr-durr'd - when you sit around agreeing how morally superior you are for liking/disliking something you get instant gratification for zero effort, meanwhile trying to actually solve problematic issues is a job for a lifetime and it may ultimately fail anyway. People don't like putting in effort for things that don't affect them personally, but they sure do like being with the "good guys".

An interesting thing about doing more research is that sometimes it can actually make something that looks problematic seem a lot less so. I was really disturbed the first time I heard the story of Shakespeare’s the taming of the shrew, as I think a lot of people are, but learning the context around it made me realize that it was actually extremely progressive for its time. It was basically a commentary on a certain style of comedic plays where the whole joke was a guy beating his wife into submission. All of the sudden a story that looked like it was about extreme abuse came to me in a story about saying hey, don’t beat up your wife. Even if she’s awful. She will come to love you more if you are kind to her. And while any given person may or may not agree with the idea that she ought to be submitting to him in the end, it is a big difference from looking at it from a modern perspective. Anyway I just thought that was interesting

The age of consent is NOT 13 in Japan, the Prefectures decide the age of consent much like how the State law decides it in the USA, 13 is the lowest any Prefecture could set it under Federal Law. None of the Prefectures I could find data on have the age consent under 16. Tokyo Prefecture has the same age of Consent as California in the US which is 18

I have a friend in Japan who has been a victim of sexual harassment from a young age and she's never persued anything against those people because of a: the shame culture and b: how unfortunately common it is. The age of consent in Japan is not 13 idk why people always get that wrong but no one under 18 can walk into an adult store, or go to a AV shop if they are under 18, or even 20, etc. ALL the same rules apply. There are many efforts to raise the minimum age, its not just accepted in society or something like that.
I think the reason plenty of people get it is because of the constant spreading of that misinformation. Even searching up what Japans age of consent is it says 13. And even me myself was confused for the longest time about what Japans age of consent was, as plenty of people were saying that the age of consent was 13 in general,that the age of consent differed depending on the region of of where you were at in Japan or that 13 was the age of consent for teens aged 13-17 and the that the general age of consent was 18. Hope that explains it.
it's only some areas with the 13 age of consent in major cities and like a lot of prefectures in Japan it's 18 but it can go as low as 16 if there is parental consent.

It's something a lot of people tend to confuse when it comes to giving money. They see giving a street guy money as supporting a drug habit, meanwhile they just came out of a liquor store and are going to be having boxed wine for dinner. There's this classism, entitlement and delusions of grandeur when it comes to homeless/poor people doing anything the non-homeless can.
Like, I remember reading this story on Tumblr about a pair of kids in a nearly-on-the-street family: the younger, autistic brother worked his ass off for months to buy his sister a 3DS for her birthday. They decided to try it out outside, on their own stoop, when a neighbor caught them and berated for having "an item of luxury" without knowing the context. It was earned through hard work but because poor equals, living on the street or dressing in rags, these kids weren't allowed to have an expensive _toy._
The autistic brother was reported to have fallen into a depression and I've never seen any updates. I hope he recovered, but I can see how he would probably grow up neglecting himself/his needs or never buying anyone a gift again after being traumatized like that.
Anyway, the lesson I'm trying to convey is: it's not your responsibility to feel guilty for how a pervert used your money for evil.

I appreciate the video and agree with most things. The main thing I don’t agree with is the holier than thou attitude exuded when asking the question “why would you continue to love something after discovering how awful the creator is?” I can’t help that I adore Rurouni Kenshin and Harry Potter. When I found out about the Rurouni Kenshin author I was heartbroken and afraid to rewatch the show and have something that used to be so enjoyable for me be tarnished. I rewatched it and it was tarnished, but not enough that I didn’t still love what is great about Rurouni Kenshin. I realize that all I can do is not directly monetarily support the author, but I will not just cut these works out of my life forever, as I literally find the Harry Potter movies soothing and comforting. I didn’t appreciate the being made to feel “not good/moral enough” to just completely drop some of my favorite media ever. I can go out and look for and support non problematic content while still enjoy a limited consumption of the problematic content that I fell in love with before discovering the truth about the creators.

I agree with this. I think sometimes what hurts people the _most_ about realizing that one of their favorite creators is a scumbag, is that you look at the media they made, some of which might've been instrumental in teaching you some of your own values, and you wonder... how could they have made this, and still not understood how to be a good person? some of the stuff you learned from their work helped make _you_ a good person... how did _they_ get it so wrong?? it feels like a betrayal, because their work led you to believe that they'd know better. that they'd be better people than they are.
the term "death of the author" is often misused, and this is something else that the video didn't mention, which I wish it had. "death of the author" also means that whatever is in the text, is in the text, regardless of author comments or stated intentions. so, taking J. K. Rowling as an example... if something inside of Harry Potter seems to promote anti-discriminatory ideas, like the idea that magic users born to non-magical families are just as good at magic as anyone else, then that's objectively part of the text... anyone can understand that message when they read it. but so is Hermione's crusade to free the Hogwarts house elves, which is portrayed as silly, because the house elves actually like their enslavement as long as they aren't literally physically abused. they have some sort of magical compulsion to fulfill that enslaved role, so they're actually happier if Hermione just leaves their situation alone. which... sounds for all the world like the kind of rhetoric that white slave owners used to use to justify their keeping of black slaves. it is, at the very least, a really bad point to try and make. and on top of that, Hermione's pursuit of activism on behalf of downtrodden people, is portrayed as a universally silly concept that isn't worth the effort that vocal activists put into it.
both of these messages are simultaneously and objectively in the text, there to be found whenever you read it, always. even if the author were to make a statement that she didn't intend for the harmful stuff to be there. if it's there, it will be found by readers who don't know or care that she said that, in the future. in this case, "death of the author" means that she can't retcon what she already wrote. her word-of-god doesn't matter if a person can still pick these themes out of the end product, for better or for worse. and, likewise, if a ten year old kid reads the Harry Potter series nowadays, and somehow hasn't heard of any of the controversy surrounding Rowling online right now, they probably wouldn't guess that the author has something against trans people. not on their own. ultimately, it's good that a kid wouldn't pick that up from her work, but those who do know might also reread the Harry Potter series with a newly more critical eye for the finer details. if there's a description of a woman who is supposed to be unappealing in the Harry Potter series, and she is ever described as "mannish" then that rings louder alarm bells now, to those who know. and it _does not matter_ if Rowling swoops in and says "well I didn't meant it that way" now... people who know her politics will still find it more distasteful in the context of the information we have.
that is death of the author. it doesn't mean that we can just 100% shelve the author to continue liking what they made as though they had nothing to do with it, or as though none of their issues could've possibly wormed their way into the work they did. you probably didn't absorb their harmful views, because you were young, and looking for the good that the series actually did for you. that's a testament to you, but don't give Rowling more credit than she deserves, for your kindness.
obviously, if you still want to just remember the fun you had with the series when you didn't know there was anything wrong with it at all, you're within your right to operate that way from time to time. but I do think that at some point, it's more appropriate to confront what you know about that author, and turn a more critical eye to their work... to re-examine it for things you might not have noticed. like, if you really want to just use the work for comfort and escapism like you always have for your own benefit... honestly, I think that's also fine? but I think that it is best not to put any more money in the pocket of the person who made the work, and I think it's good to freely examine the work in public spaces where it is being discussed, when you're ready to engage with it on that level. I think you can enjoy something as a comfort in private while also being critical of it in venues where it matters. people are complex, and capable of holding multiple positions on something at the same time, and this is a good area of media engagement to practice that.
Totally agree. I would also like to point out how the main focus shifts on the main authors, completely ignoring other people. Just imagine how much people spend their time in the production of say, a 24 episode series of anime, would @noralities (or anyone else for that matter) stop watching an entire series if she found out that someone in the cast like a sound director commited a crime?
i feel the same - an example i have is that it recently came out that a member of a band i really loved had been abusing and manipulating his girlfriend for years, and after i found out about it i felt too uncomfortable to continue listening to their music, even though i still loved their songs. however, i think its totally fine for other ppl to want to listen to their music knowing about the abuse, and i don't think i'm at all morally superior for not engaging or anything (i actually wish i still could without feeling really bad about it).
i think it's fine to engage with content, even if it's by extremely problematic creators, as long as you don't give them money and keep the fact that they're probably not a morally good person in mind.

This reminds me of an old thought experiment that, now that i think about it, i haven't heard in a VERY long time... There is an artwork created that, for some reason, no one knows who created it, but it is put on display for free to the public because of it's beauty/power/meaningfulness/etc. It becomes an international sensation overnight because of it's effect on people. Those who see it in person are moved in unbelievable and dramatic ways. And you only get the effect from seeing it in person. It's not magic, but the actual physical experience of seeing it directly with your own eyes that brings about the effect. Viewing it online or seeing pictures has some effect, but comparing that seeing in person is a bit's akin to saying a person in the path of a tsunami experiences moisture. Millions of artists become hugely inspired by it, people are brought out of depression into joy at its sight, anyone seeing is wholly enriched in their lives and spirit, and so on and so forth. A few years later, a person who is world known for having done heinous things comes forward. A person who has done things that make 1940's Germany and 1950-60s USSR look like a PG-13 Disney movie. They have irrefutable evidence that they created the artwork and make it known world wide Next, they demand that for it to continue being shown they must be paid a monthly royalty/fee/rent and they must be allowed to continue doing whatever it was they were doing. If they won't be paid, they'll dissappear, but also want the artwork back to destroy it and all copies/images of it striken and outlawed (assume they have the ability to do this somehow) as it was "stolen" from them and they never consented to its display.
Assuming, somehow, that the "evil" this person does is balanced perfectly against the good coming from the work, do you continue displaying the work for people to enjoy and pay the person their fee, or give the work back knowing that it will be destroyed and that all references or copies of it will dissappear, never to be seen again?
I realize that it's an absurd scenario, but that's kind of the point. I probably have not done it justice and I'm sure I haven't remembered in entirely correctly, but the point is to take something that in reality a VERY grey topic (much like whether it's grey or gray🤣) and turn it into a very bright line question. To force the situation into contrast to show that even in the grey-est of situations, everyone has a line that they stand on one side or the other of. In the end you either pay the person and enjoy the work, or you destroy it for everyone and the person stops doing bad things. There is no middle ground in the question and the circumstances are fixed and set. In the end the answer is, where exactly IS "that line" on the scale of grey where things tip from the artist being part of the work to being disconnected from it. If the work is inherently good and produces wonderful and inherently good things/effects, but the person who created it and will also benefit from others benefiting from there work is an inherently bad person and does and continues to do inherently bad things, do you accept the good with the bad or eliminate both?
In the end, I don't know that there is an objectively or even morally "right" answer. Morality and "being right" are whatever society say they are. And from an objective perspective, which I am admittedly bad at, it seems both choices have equal weight. As much as I think a lot of people would like for there to be a universally agreed upon answer, I'm afraid it just comes down to what each of us is individually willing to give up or live with.

There's a large amount of people who are conformist as hell and have a really hard time thinking about concepts like the spirit of the rules vs the writing of the rules. It's just where they are at with their ego development. They need rigid rule structure. They don't like to see the world in greyscale. They don't like to be self-aware. They just want a conformity to help them make sense of the world. These kinds of people are the ones you see defending a law because it's a law, an obviously absurd thing to do, but that's where they're at. Leaving the conformity stage of ego development can be very hard thing to do, it means becoming self-aware and actually having to think for yourself about very complicated issues.

Some countries might allow 16 so japan will allow it but no younger 16 it's cut off there. 13 is permissible in some prefectures for Japanese national only be it omeai or simply parental approved no exceptions, never foreigners.

Most omei aren't real arranged marriages anymore either, in older people who have had no luck or failed at dating might sign up for speed date or cruse strangely enough they also have mass weddings. Parental pressure does play a big role in actual arranged marriage tho. And a lot of the ones you think are kids really aren't. I know lovecraft is like the most famous dead author was actually a racist but there’s much more to his story. Lovecraft was pretty much scared of everyone, he was paranoid, suffered a traumatic childhood, suffers from mental illness, sad love life, was poor, and died slowly from cancer. And the place in which he grew up felt like the only safe for him but as immigrants moved in he most likely felt that his save heaven was being invaded. Also overtime his views on other races changed .Sure what he writes may be way more hurtful even for his time but this was a man paranoid of everything.

It sucks because people are going to be using the Re:Zero part to dismiss her opinions on everything else she talked about. As for the Dragon Maid video, she didn’t miss, not once. He was found not guilty and released, but the point is, no one was defending what he wrote, everyone agreed it was disgusting. People only defended the freedom to write and that’s it. Watching this in 2022, the mention of Lindsay Ellis and Natalie Wynn as good sources for more info on JK Rowling's fucked up shenanigans in a video about how indiscriminate cancel culture has become feels extremely and depressingly on the nose.
I hope Lindsay Ellis has had a chance to heal some after getting away from the meat grinder she's been put through for the better half of a decade.
What most shocked me is how tame and level-headed Rowlings statements are. If i listened only to twitter activists, I would think she is calling for exterminations. Turns out, she has the same moderate opinions that many trans people also have. But only some activists and sheep proclaim her evil, and somehow try to attribute to her statements a malice and harm that is simply not existent.

As one of the new subscribers, I can't express enough how important it was to hear someone express their discontent about media. Having shaped a lot of my opinions on "being one of the boys", it feels like I'm finally uncovering some ""dark and sad"" truth about what I'm consuming and how I'm ignoring some of its less-than-ideal to outright-disgusting aspects.

A little bit of a hot take here but... fiction DOES affect reality... when it's handled irresponsibly. I don't think its an artists job to teach viewers that x and y is bad, and if its featured in their media, people should not be watching it if they don't ALREADY know that x and y is bad. Maybe the artist could say "x and y is bad please get out if this is not already thoroughly cemented in your brain." Because... there is still a line between fiction and reality, and you can feature "problematic" aspects in your work without ACTUALLY BELIEVING THEY SHOULD BE APPLIED TO THE REAL WORLD. You know? In my country there are some podcasts that do talk about these things in animes (there’s also one that is fully devouted to watch and criticize really really bad animes, members are pretty masochysts), but i do agree there should be way more.

My voice is a pointless expression in an endless din, but I would point out that Death of The Author is an *analytical* technique, one aimed at removing the lived experience and context of the writer from the analysis of a piece of work. People can't and shouldn't just cite it so they don't have to feel bad for buying stuff from an asshole, it requires critical analysis and consideration.
I don't think there really is such a thing as ethical consumption. Everything is problematic on some level. There's always going to be something somewhere on down the pipeline, whether it be an offensive idea or an offensive person involved with the work, that you're going to end up supporting with your money no matter what you do. While I agree that criminals and pedophiles should not be supported, creating such all-encompassing anxiety in people for possibly supporting or enjoying something problematic isn't really the way to go either.
I'm saying this as an OCD person that struggles constantly with "pure" and "impure" thoughts and agonizes over stuff like this until it sucks the joy out of everything. I feel often feel like I'm expected to be perfect as a consumer, or else I'm going to be hated, or my friends are going to leave me, etc. It's a horribly shitty place to be.
Have you seen the show "The Good Place"? It's a long series, but it has great themes about what it means to be a good person. One episode in particular is about how there's unintended consequences of a lot of our actions, to the point where buying a tomato or ordering your mom flowers can result in supporting sweatshops and sexist CEOs. I really recommend that show, it's so good.
Anyway, the point is that you can't avoid everything problematic, but being a better person isn't about being perfect. It's about being a little better than you were yesterday. Working to self improvement. If you already do that, you are a good person.
I do appreciate you addressing the whole Death of the Author argument. It's supposed to be used as an analysis of a work, not as a means to justify enjoying it. Also, it's meant to separate intent of the author from what actually made it on to the pages. Like, Dumbledore being gay is never directly mentioned in the text, and is at best alluded to. If Rowling wanted to brownie points for having gay representation, it needed to be in the text, not some tweet on Twitter. That's how Death of the Author is intended to be used; not saying Harry Potter should be taken away from her because she did a bad.

I can tell that a lot of research and effort went into this video but you made a mistake in your arguments.
6:15 The PROTECT Act of 2003 was overruled. It was overruled because it was unconstitutionally vague, and so it has no legal value. This law was also made in 2003 when a lot of countries were struggling to find appropriate laws to cover the rapid growth of the internet. A more accurate law to point to on this topic would be the "18 US Code § 2256" which (to paraphrase) says that the depiction has to be to be indistinguishable from real children or adults for it to be considered an offence. So your point about this being unprotected speech is technically not true.
Your counter argument about Japan's lower rape count showing that its not what its reported to be is very concrete. Though, A Study done by Miltonn Diamond, Petr Weiss, and Eva Jozifkova called "Pornography and sex crimes in the Czech Republic" showed that in the Czech republic, after decriminalizing all possible sexual content, there was a rapid decline in the number of reported cases of child abuse. This study also Showed similar results in Denmark and Japan. So take that how you will.
Arguments like the ones at 39:55 are very exhausting to read, so I would also like to make a stronger counter argument against your "Fiction does not equal Reality" and "Media does affect Reality" segments. The 1st amendment was made to protect unpopular opinions, even harmful ones. This is a very political matter with a lot of basis in opinion, but I personally don't find value in allowing governments to have control over the personal expression of others in any situation, even when that expression is harmful or offensive. Only exception to that being is if the art being made causes harm in the process of creation. Though I do agree that if you find media that you don't agree with that you shouldn't support it, and even do what you're doing to counter said media. This helps society as a whole figure out what it wants by itself without giving more artificial influence to one part of it. I get that this is somewhat boiling down to "it doesn't harm children" and if you wanna make a stretch also "if you don't like it don't watch it", but I feel that it is important to tie this into a bigger picture. Also based on your video it doesn't seem like you completely disagree with me.
Basically what I'm saying here is that the implications of a possible correlation between media and action doesn't justify censorship, and the people as a whole should decide how they want to express themselves and what expressions they want to support. This is partly in agreement to your point, but your point is about creators taking responsibility and being held accountable for their art and its more against certain types of media while mine is more welcoming to all opinions and expressions to be put into into the judgment cauldron of society.
Thanks for making this video, there were lots of really great points that I can agree with, and I think the "how to move forward" section hit it spot on the nose. I could also call you out for getting mad at people that don't do research (which idk why you would expect that from a 'normal' youtube comment) and then getting the PROTECT Act part wrong, but its really a common mistake, and I only point this out now because I find it funny xD. Though this video did get me to think about this topic and eventually help me come to my own conclusion which I can discuss... with no one probably, because i find it hard to think that anyone would read all of this hahah.

Media can very much affect reality, even negatively. For example, after the Game of Thrones-series became popular, a lot of people bought dogs that looked a lot like the direwolves in the show, because they thought direwolves were cool and/or wanted to be more like the Starks, who owned the direwolves. Problem was, the dog breed in question required a lot of care and not everybody who adopted one could provide that. So most of those dogs were returned to the shelters or flat-out abandoned (source: www.nationalgeographic.com/animals/article/game-of-thrones-dire-wolf-fans-buying-huskies). Media can influence large groups of people, even if doing so wasn't the author's intend. It's like what Nora said, "Media doesn't exist in a vaccum".
Making this type of content is very important for self-reflection in the community of people who enjoy Japanese media. Responsibly consuming even problematic media requires individuals to be aware and critical of what they consume, and long-form analysis like yours goes a long way to promoting that. I'm very sorry you received so much backlash for your previous video, and I hope you continue to produce similar content in the future.

Now let me explain, Krone's design is similar to an actual black person, and I've seen many of us that look like her. However, the fact that Jemima who is black, and Don who seems at least mixed or latino are not drawn with the large lips and nose of her is racist. They are all similar colors, Don a little lighter, but Jemima is the closest, but Jemima and Don are good, and Krone is bad which means they could be using the big lips and eyes as "disturbing features" to illustrate how "scary" she is. I also don't think it's accidental because of how the good guys are not strongly featured but the Krone is rather than making them all show similar features or slightly different ones within the same plain, but it also isn't her design that makes her racist. Things can be twisted in an infinite number of ways to prove any point, and it's clear that no other "dark-skinned character" gets the same treatment, so why should it be racist? She is just a big and "evil" character compared to the main cast, which also has dark-skinned kids in it, her skin colour has literally 0 relevance on her presentation AND plot role.
If one really wants to go dig a hole in TPN setting is how dark-skinned humans are a minority of the kids raised in the Farms since they were offerings from the humans of the "Real World" back at the end of the "war", and since most of the population world-wide is definitely in a different skin-colour than white it would make sense to be a majority.
But who the fuck cares about this? Nobody, it's a manga, and the author portrays characters how they want, they don't have to respect details for the real world.

I think one of the things that might be excused in such a world (and I don't claim to say that it is, in fact, part of it... but merely suggesting that it is possible) is the fact that there may be magic to make such a transition less... stop-gap than our current, most-advanced process. In a world where magic is possible, an author could say that there's some magic or a potion or something of the sort that can let a person change their physical appearance or gender (given the abundance of transfiguration magic and shapeshifters in the series, I wouldn't put it past the setting). Of course, this is all speculation and hyperbole based on my own opinion of fantasy literature and other works (like StarFinder which has exactly those measures built into the equipment section of the game, potions that literally let you change your appearance and physical gender at any time for only a small monetary cost because of how scientifically-advanced the setting is), so it doesn't matter what I might raise as a counterpoint because it's not something explicitly explained in the text about whether it is possible or not.
Also: Witch and Wizard do not exclusively represent feminine or masculine career paths (even though it is true for Harry Potter specifically) as most RPG systems and many fantasy stories I have experience with tend to use both words regardless of the physical gender of the character. Most specialist names for such characters are also gender-neutral; things such as Abjurer, Evoker, Conjuror, Necromancer, etc... are used to define magical characters regardless of identity.

I find it so odd that people use the "cultural differences" argument to justify it, because the minute you actually look into that argument, it crumbles instantly. Some anime fans (not all ofc) are really giving the genre a bad rep by not only defending child sexualization, but also being like "thiS iS wHy wOmeN sHoulDnT waTcH aNimE" when you called them out on it. I think at least some of the knee jerk reactions you might get are likely in response from a similar problem that other forms of media, namely tabletop RPGs and video games and even heavy metal music, received; which was the highly reductive: "Z media _automatically_ makes X group do Y or engage in Y behavior/manner."
Like all things, all media is a sticky subject and not easily handled by most people, because the cause and effects of said media requires more than a Yes or No answer. Oftentimes, it requires more than even a Maybe answer. Hell, sometimes, it requires more than a sliding scale can show. In some cases, you have to start getting into the Z axis.

Cultural relativism is one of my hated defenses of stuff like this. Even if it were true (and it's often not), it's an explanation to provide perspective, it's not a moral justification in itself.

It's nice to hear this perspective from someone who was also once a fan of Rurouni Kenshin. It's been so hard processing what happened, and I still struggle today with the fact that I was inspired by someone who is undeniably a horrible person. I was in denial for a long time. I'm glad you got to come to terms with it, and I think I can now too. As much as I loved the story of ruroken, I won't be purchasing any of the mangas anymore or the merchandise... It's such a horrible shame...
I think you need to forgive yourself. Rurouken is still a really good story, just a really good story made by a monster. Not sure what I'll do with my copies, which were purchased long before the allegations come out. But maybe one day I'll be able to love them again.
If I had read Ruroni Kenshin, I think I would still read it, because I know personally never support or agree with Watsuki's actions. I would rather accept that this is something that happened, acknowledge it and enjoy the media rather than box off something I like since the actions of the creator were reprehensible.
(*Should've waited till I saw the entire video, I think I'd still I'd like the story, but not in the way that would directly support Watsuki. But I'm just saying that I'd have a hard time cutting off something that I love.)

I’m in a fandom that gets a lot of hate from a lot of different people, they just seem to hate the creator for no reason, but there’s a character that is been said to be a child in multiple ways, literally describing herself as a teenager in the FIRST EPISODE, is in high school (at least able to go to prom), and has been called “little girl” by a semi-connected character, but is still shipped with a character that has been confirmed by one of the creators to be an adult. The fandom will stretch so hard to say “oh, she’s canonically 18” or “the creator never revealed any of the characters ages” or god forbid “bro it’s not real, plus they’re not humans so they must age differently”. Even is the two characters held hands in the latest episode, one of the characters died in that episode, and the other character had also said in his introduction that he is romantically interested of the character that died, and most likely that was to comfort him, because she knew that he loved the character that literally sacrificed herself to save the two characters. Also, the production team’s newest project has a voice actor that is most likely going to get recasted because he’s been outed as an “it’s just fiction” user. Genuinely want to see what is going on in the hater’s heads every day, also, doxxing ain’t ok. Stop doxxing indie animators edgy ten year olds.

I myself am an advocate for the freedom of expression of any artist. No matter how problematic or morally abhorrent the subject of the media could be. And as idealistic as it sounds, I wish to trust in the market of ideas of the general public to notice that the media in question displays morally abhorrent content.
As for my personal views on sexualising underage fictional characters specifically, it's a bit complicated. I don't consume that media, and I do what I can to avoid seeing it as much as I possibly can because it makes me uncomfortable.
How ever, just because I personally am uncomfortable by a subject, I don't want to go over the line when we ban or censor media. The connection between the consumption of Lolicon and it's causation of rl child abuse is kind of shakey. And the reason I find just a slight problem with trying to blame fiction for real world crimes is because I don't want criminals to have a scapegoat to attract attention away from them, to lessen their accountability for their crimes.
To me, that argument seems akin to the "r@pe p*rn causes real life rape" argument, even though there's no evidence to back it up. At the end of the day I believe criminals are completely accountable for the crimes they commit, and blaming fiction could lead to a rabbit hole of censorship of media that wishes to explore taboo and sensitive topics.
But that only applies to media that doesn't include abuse or incite violence or extreme ideologies in a positive manner. If there are media that that presents these topics in a positive manner, then I believe the creators should be immediately investigated.

Exactly this. There’s a tricky line between committing the act vs something that’s just a lewd fantasy. While there are kinks that are practiced regularly, a lot of them also stay based in fiction for a multitude of reasons. Anything from being impractical to perform, how the consequences of performing it severely affect lifestyle, to harming others or even one’s self.
By the end of the day fictional versions of these fantasies are often the best or even only way to filter out or exercise these kinks safely (even if some of these people’s kinks bother me a lot).
Again, this isn’t to say criminals shouldn’t be held responsible for committing actual crimes. Media that promotes harm should be held accountable when doing so just like you said.
This here is the moderate and right way to look at it, but ppl here who love cancel culture will try to force their views into others to get their way, like Noralities.

'theres no evidence to back it up' true there isn't but that's because as she pointed out things like this aren't well researched to begin with just because there isn't basically any research doesn't mean it's fine.
Also I think her point was more to do with desensitisation and the idea that once a culture is so saturated with an idea through media (in this case cartoon drawings of children being molested) punishment becomes less severe because in the minds of the people this is something very commonplace and almost 'normal' when it really REALLY isn't, especially in Japan's case.
You're right in an ideal world people could create whatever the fuck the wanted and people could come to their own conclusions, but heres the thing. A lot of people barely think about the media they consume, most people can barely tell you why they like something let alone if something is actively bad. People watch, not engaging beyond that meanwhile subconsciously becoming desensitised to some really awful things.
I personally don't care if they were to ban loli outright in my country. I think it's fucked up and unless more research is done to prove otherwise I do think is does more harm than good.

Technically its not even a cultural thing, it's legal at a national level (age of concent being 13). Though in practical applications you and your partner had best be 20+ or you'll be jailed by the prefectural police with a nice lawsuit from the parents as each precinct has their own amendments and policing separate from the national police (even if they're 18 and they concent, their parents also have to in some cases... its complicated).

My long and short: The best thing that we can do in situations like this is to simply not consume the product being produced instead of attempting to cancel the creator. By boycotting products we can actively dissuade certain things without overstepping in the way so commonly seen in cancel culture which leads to the ruining of people's lives. There is a fine line between enforcing the law and catching criminals and ruining someone's life because they disagree with you on a contentious topic. We can all agree that child porn in any context is bad, and as such should be reported to proper authorities, but it is the job of the LAW, and not the PEOPLE to punish criminals and wrongdoers. There is no point in having a justice system if we operate under mob justice.
(About the dragon maid in the beginning) I was in a sexually abusive relationship when I was 14 he was 20. He was really into anime and would always make lewd comments about the child characters (even if they were sexualised or not) and then proceed to try and reflect those lewd thoughts onto me bc of my age, and call me by the characters name. Krone's visual depiction is unfortunate, because she is a very well-written, fleshed out, intelligent, and nuanced character and you really do feel for her when she's quite literally made to be a sacrificial lamb. Hopefully the Amazon series be able to focus on these positive traits while getting rid of these negative stereotypes... that's assuming the series is any good to begin with and they don't completely botch it.
