  • The Red Matter games are among my most favorite VR games. Having played them on both the Quest 2 and PCVR I'm very familiar with them. They're fantastic puzzle games set in a dystopian sci-fi cold war era and one of the things the developer, Vertical Robot seems to pride themselves on is getting the best performance possible and delivering an unprecedented level of visual fidelity on whatever hardware their game is running on. Red Matter 2 looks ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS on the PlayStation VR2 headset. It's sporting 4K textures and running at 120 fps on the PlayStation 5 and they did NOT have to rely on reprojection to do it! When I first saw Vertical Robots claims about the graphics for the PS VR2 version of Red Matter 2 I was curious to see how it compares to my high end gaming PC and HOLY MOLY!!! Red Matter 2 is the best looking game on the PSVR2 hands down! I can honestly say it looks just as good on the PS5 as it does on my gaming PC. The visuals are very sharp and clear, unlike all the other PSVR2 games I've tried so far, and gameplay is incredibly smooth. Even though I've seen it and played through the entire game, I still don't believe it. Well done Vertical Robot. Well done!
This video is not a full game review of Red Matter 2 but a highlight of the upgraded features in the PSVR 2 version of game. If you'd like to see my full game review you can check it out here - • This Game Has the Best...

Looks very slick, that foveated rendering instead of re-projection is deffo where devs should be looking to, when eye tracking available. Sounds like Vertical Robot have slapped down a gauntlet and said: we double dare you to others. Nice review as as always, thanks!

The crazy thing is other games are using foveated rendering too and still not achieving the visual clarity Vertical Robot did with this one. I don't exactly what resolution this game is being rendered at but it's gotta be up pretty close to the 2000 x 2040 pixels per eye because it's super sharp and crisp looking in the headset. It really does look as good, or at least really close to what I play at on my PC.

@@Maraksot78 yeah doesn't Call of the mountain have it also? They have maybe just done a top notch job on optimising graphics, lighting and just polished things so it is shinier than a Regimental Sergeant Major with OCD dress shoes.

Yes, Call of the Mountain uses the eye tracking as well for the foveated rendering so no matter where you look it's always in focus. Call of the Mountain has a lot more open areas and a lot of detail with plants and other things so I'm guessing there's a lot more objects for the GPU to render so they had to lower the resolution making things look a little blurry and then on top of it they had to run the game at 60fps and use reprojection to get the frame rate up to 120 and the reprojection introduces a lot of ghosting making the experience a lot less enjoyable. Red Matter 2 visually, is a night and day difference of an experience from Call of the Mountain. If Sony could have done with Call of the Mountain what Vertical Robot did here with Red Matter 2 then I don't know I would have anything bad to say about the PSVR2 in my review. 😂 The resolution in Red Matter 2 is clearly higher, things look sharp and clear. There's no blurriness to the image, and since there's no reprojection, that 120fps game play feels buttery smooth. If devs make more games that look and run like this on the PSVR2 then I think the PSVR2 is going to be very successful.

Is RE: Village running at a max 2000x2040 per eye as well? I wonder if a PS5 Pro could get it running at 90fps also. Regardless, as is it's still INcredible on PSVR2.
And maybe if COTM ran at 90fps(On ps5 pro), and a full 2000x2040 it would been a lot more bearable. It's still technically 'climb' of the mountain though which seems to take up 80 percent of the game. :P
Crossing my fingers for an Ocean Descent(Shark Dive! from PSVR Worlds), Astro Bot Rescue Mission and Resident Evil 7 port(s) in the near future.

Hopefully Sony keeps adding games. Everyone will benefit if devs makes money with vr games

Just finished the game. The visuals were unreal and the puzzles were just the right amount of challenging. When it ended i was expecting the credits to roll... And they didnt! It was a single screen with a few names. It was made by such a small team, I couldnt believe it. The quality of this game has set such me such a standard of expections for psvr2 games going forward.
Edit: forgot to mention the amount of rooms i walked into with mad scifi stuff, i just had to stop and stare

Great review. This is the 1st game that shows the true potential of the headset’s graphical fidelity. I’m still trippin’ over how good this game looks. I has to be the full res of the headset, if not right next to it. Hats off to the devs for what’s also a great game too.

You said it nicely...PsVr2 FOV RENDERING is gradual. I was not able to notice it even when trying. Night and day difference to quest pro FOV rendering where distorted low rendered graphics are very noticeable with your peripheral vision

Many games are not even close to the native resolution - or they use tricks, that its only Highres in a tiny radius around your gamingcharacter. Vertical Robot nailed it and it makes me wonder, how many Devs actually force Flat-Game-Engines to work somehow in VR, ignoring foveated eye tracking and lose a lot of performance with that decission. UE5 + Vertical Robot really showcase, what can be done.

Sadly for such short games it’s just not worth a $500+ price tag to jump from other VR platforms just to play it like this. PSVR2 has a very limited game selection aside from some titles already on a normal PlayStation and rhythm games. The games are just too short.

If you turn your head to the side but are still looking at the object and it gets blurry that means it’s not using foveated rendering.

Remember that there's foveated rendering and EYE-TRACKED dynamic foveated rendering. This game is using standard foveated rendering, where the center is the clearest part and it gets progressively lower res the further into the periphery.
