Nixon has just as much of a mystical aura around him as Spiers. He never recieved an injury and never fired his weapon in combat for the entirety he was in Europe.
@@chris.3711 Yes Lewis Nixon was one of the few members of the 101st with 3 combat jumps. Edward Shames was his assistant for a time but disgustedly asked for a transfer. In an interview available on UA-cam Shames called Nixon the biggest drunk in the Army or something to that effect. Shames also mistakenly called him Richard Nixon, which is kind of funny if you’re as old as I am.
Thanks for pointing out about the Japanese American Artillery guys helping to liberate some of the camps. That unit was detached from the 442 RCT organization during that time frame.
I rarely comment on UA-cam, but this episode in particular struck me how well you write and narrate; accurate, succinct, and clear. Your content is always informative, and consistently strikes a good balance of decorum and humour (when appropriate). Most underrated channel on UA-cam by far. Keep up the good work 🫡 Thank you from Wales 🏴
This episode especially struck me because of the scene when they are entering the camp and a prisoner is carrying his dead friend, speaking Serbian and begging Americans to save his friend. It’s not well known but we Serbs suffered immensely during ww2, 3 of my great grandfathers having similar fate.
I know that Band of Brothers, The Pacific and Masters of the Air were intended to be the end of the whole project, but damn it'd be awesome to have a mini-series on the 442nd. Would also give a bit more coverage to the Italian theater.
YOURE USING HORSESSSSSS 4:30 i love those comparisons of scenes from the show and real life photos. Talk about immersion. I hope some of the soldiers depicted here were still living when this came out. Can you imagine being them and seeing an almost flawless recreation of some incredibly dramatic moments in history? It would have been powerful
Still, since the early 19th century, the Germans/ Prussians have had one of Europe's most potent and dangerous cavalries. Even Napoleon respected the Prussians' military file and rank capabilities, given their equestrian expertise with horses. The Allies and the newer generation of people today still don't understand how Germany almost conquered most of Europe and fought off two Superpowers with a 50% horse-drawn military. That's how good their tradition was dating back to Frederick the Great.
@@SolidAvenger1290 Thanks for this highly detailed reply. I was just remembering a funny quote from this episode, I believe it happens during the whole prisoner convoy* sequence. But back to what you said, i appreciate this because just yesterday I watched a video essay on the myriad historical failures of the recent "Napoleon" farce of a movie. If h*tler hadn't been as hugely incompetent as he was, or his generals who had actual experience had been allowed to fight correctly, the war could have been even more horrendous. It's hard to imagine it being much worse but the idea of the Germans fighting at full power is pretty terrifying
@@ThommyofThenn That really is true and even another worse case scenario if things went different. Also other ideas JJ could look into and maybe dealing a future video on Nazi aircraft well he could look into ME262 the first Jet fighter as another since people think that tech would've really swung the luck of the Nazis which really others don't see it that way or the corner shot tech and also saw night vision tech there. Who knows? anyway really have a look since our times has a whole lot of topics to get through.
Sorry, I didn't word that very clearly. Half were saved out of the total population. Most of the 15,000 killed were by the Germans before the camps were liberated.

2:30 what did he expect them to do? I was under the impression that German citizens couldn't exactly leave and would they have been able to enter other countries? I suppose they could have flown to Sweden or something
