- :Exploring Abandoned Anything can be dangerous or Deadly without experience. I don't encourage anyone to enter any Abandoned structure. Not only is safety a concern, but often times its illegal and when possible, i seek out permission from the owner or local police. I simply go to document its history before it's gone forever and leave things the way I find them. I only take pictures and only leave footprints. I assume all the risks & responsibility before doing this. Please don't attempt to do this on your own. Their could be nails, Asbestos, Falling concrete soft floors, animals or other hazards. That is a Budd Company Rail Diesel Car (RDC) you were in, post 10. Self-propelled, one Diesel engine for each truck mated to hydraulic transmissions, and capable of multiple-unit operation. Very reliable back in the day if the engines were started up, the car(s) run in service, and then the engines shut down at the end of the run. Idling was not good due to the high compression ratio. Also, the filters/fluids needed changing per the manufacturer's recommendations.
Most of those there are ex. Boston and Maine Railroad, too. The one at 7:25 is a B&M Baggage Combo, hence the large side door.
And lots got de powered and were ran push pull by f series locos

They likely sold off these cars decades ago. These are not owned by the MBTA. Whoever bought them likely just let them sit on that siding..
Not if they are riddled with asbestos which would cost more than the scrap value to remove

About thirty years ago I made many trips from Boston to Concord on 93, then 89 up to near Henniker. The stretch of 89 I drove was nice country.

Ya wasteful storage and mindless land clearing. No wonder we have floods n such. Tracks restored is needed. In Wi this would turn into birdwatching run.
Whenever I see abandoned homes, buildings, boats etc I just want to scream recycle, repurpose. Such waste drives me crazy. My home is thrift store deco.

My family always loved trains and my brother has worked on the railroad for many years. He inspects the tracks and keeps them safe, especially during bad weather. It kinda makes me sad to see these old, rotting cars that used to be full of life. Isn't there something better they could do with these instead of just dumping them in the woods? Thanks for the video!
From the looks of the inside of the one post10 got into, they are being used as storage sheds. So… I guess they sort of have gotten a second life?

Former Boston and Maine cars. Several were rebuilt by the MBTA in the early 80s without motors but these look like they weren't which leads me to think they were beyond repair even in the mid 80s. When they worked they were economical to run and kept train service alive on many branches throughout New England into the 1960s whereas it would not have been financially viable with engines hauling un-powered coaches. B&M had the largest fleet of them and almost all went to the MBTA. One special one was "the president's car" with a kitchenette in it.
@manidig: I remember riding on these in the early to mid 80s just before they were taken out of service.

That's a good idea, however there is more to it then just that. They'd also need regular maintenance and administration of some sort to ensure the space is distributed fairly for those who want to live like that or are stuck in a situation and looking for a way out, they'd also need some kind of training and mentorship to get them a hand up.
That is an impractical idea. They should be taken to the scrap yard and recycled. These are not fit for human habitation, especially in the Boston area.
The majority of the homeless are homeless by choice. There are all kinds of programs to assist with housing, etc.

Those cars are owned by the Plymouth and Lincoln Railroad or commonly known as the Hobo Railroad just around the corner. They purchased a ton of those RDC cars, most coming from the MBTA. As well most of the fleet the MBTA had were from the Boston and Maine, that’s why there was a Boston and Maine car mixed in.
With the Hobo Railroad and Winnipesaukee Railroad they operate a number of those cars, as well as the privately owned RDC cars located in Danbury Connecticut make the frequent trip from Danbury up to the Hobo Railroad so those parts in those cars are valuable and are reused to keep other cars operational.

You think that is aluminum or stainless steel? Thought aluminum at first, but wow, is that siding shiny, and not a lot of dents. I'm thinking stainless. Either way, you're right. Do something with them, or recycle them. I also wonder if that excavator has something to do with recycling. Might be why they are there.

@@stanstenson8168 Not as lightweight as aluminum, but certainly more so than steel. And as you say, very durable; does not need painting to protect it from the elements. That is why it is the metal of choice for decades now when skinning railroad passenger cars (in addition to use in other components.)

Just saw online the Schell Bridge in Northfield, MA over the Connecticut River is going to be replaced soon. Might be worth checking out before construction starts.

Brings back memories from the 80’s riding from Gloucester to north station. No a/c and little heat in winter. MBTA leased the cars from Boston and Maine.

I am amazed about the amount of abandoned stuff in the woods.
When I was a kid growing up (50's and 60's) these are mostly what was seen on the rails in and around Boston on both the New Haven RR and Boston & Maine RR unless they were long distance trains. They had very unique horns that could easily identify them as approaching. Built strong and solid, I think most people missed the "buddliners" when they finally vanished.
I used to ride these from Lowell, Ma to Boston Ma all the time to go watch the Boston Bruins play!

My favorite childhood memory, was back in the 1960's, as an American tourist traveling on an English commuter train. Traveling by train was so much fun for me. I'd love to do so in the U.S., if given the opportunity.

The car marked Boston and Maine preceded the MBTA. I remember them as a kid. Once the Mass Bay Transportation Authority took over they went with the purple color on the cars. These type of trains still run out of Boston daily from North and South Stations.
Mbta doesn't use Budd RDC cars any more. Long since retired.

The purple color means this was commuter rail, not the regular lines like orange, red, green. Commuter rail only runs at certain times, from certain locations and makes a few stops along the way and dumps people in big places like South Station and then it's inactive until quitting time and reverses the process. Regular lines seemingly stop every 500 feet it seems. If I go to Boston and don't want to deal with driving around and getting screwed parking in it...i'll take the "T" from Riverside (green line/D train) So glad I don't have to do that on the daily.
I believe those are called Budliners. Half the Rail Trails in Eastern MA had Budliners Back in the Day!

I work for the keolis Maintaining these cars out in Boston I didn’t even know thoes cars still existed I wouldlove to see them In person. one of the guys I work with he use to work on them same cars I showed him the video and he said he recognized the 9158 control coach from when he work on the northside way back when good job post10

maybe its just me, but i think someone could make cool, small apartments from these train carts . either to give some homeless people a warm place to sleep or have affordable housing for single people. park the trains on the side on an abandoned track, insulate them and create a home from it.

I lived in Rockport in the early 80’s & probably rode on some of these trains, 5:25 train to Boston-first train out of the day. They were cold in winter and hot in summer (no heat or a/c). Windows we’re all scratched up.
Very cool. I love trains. My dad was an engineer for Conrail.
I knew these were Budd Rail Cars from the 50’s and 60’s but had absolutely no idea they still existed! Happy to see them sitting and waiting to be picked up!

As someone with an interest in graffiti, I was was surprised by the lack of it on scrap trains that have been left alone for so long, then I noticed all the buff marks where they have been cleaned at some point. That is the first time I have ever seen a scrap clean being cleaned like that. It's interesting, I wonder why?
Probably in a area far from the city but T Trains in boston rarely get tagged, the cargo trains however are covered and look amazing.

I'm just here for the utterly clueless comments, lol. These are NOT abandoned, they were NOT "just left there". They're owned by a railroad. The railroad operates other Buddcars {that's what they're called} and these are kept on PRIVATE PROPERTY for parts.

At the end with the linemen you can ask them for the insulators and they will give you them!
Thats how I have gotten a lot of insulators over the years.
They will just throw them away otherwise.

It depends if they are utility companies or contractors. Actual utility companies are required now to bring it all in for disposal. Contractors usually don't care. If it's small stuff like insulators they will just dump them on the ground or in a forest. These guys look to be contractors.
What can you do with insulators ?

Those train cars are RDCs. Made by the Budd company.
