On "My Car Story" we're in the West Suburbs of Chicago IL on 9-15-20.
We're looking at a 1959 Chevrolet Bel Air 2 Door Post in Roman Red Paint. The car comes with the factory 348 CI V8 “tri-power” engine producing 335 HP, and has a 4 speed manual transmission.
The car's Owner is Dennis Doerge. Dennis has had this car since 2019. He’s been a Buick Dealer for 40+ years, however when he saw this car he could not refuse to buy it. This car has been restored and looks “showroom” new.
ENJOY!
My first car was this car in Biscayne trim. When I bought it at 15 years old it had a blown up 283, a blown up 3 sp. transmission and a blown up rear end. By the time of my 16th birthday it had a 283 Corvette engine, a 3 sp. Synchololock transmission with a Hurst Shifter, and a 4/11 posi rear end. The reason that I bought it was that the body was perfect, it had great paint, and I got it for $100.00 dollars. I wish that I still had it.❤❤❤

I think this is probably one of the best cars ive seen on here yet... absolutely killer...
Hi JEFFREY, High praise :-) Lou
We had a 1959 Bel Air, four door. Green and white 283 four barrel, no air condition. We took it to the top of Pike's Peak. In the summer time, from Oklahoma.

I was also born in '59, in 1977 my first car was a '59 2 door Impala in mint condition.
Red paint & red interior it was a present given to me by my ma. She knew I liked '59 Chevy's I drove that car all the time & if I wasn't driving
I would just stare at the car for hours at every angle inside & out. Even an overhead view from my bedroom
window.
I was obsessed with the car even when I drove it I would look at the reflection cast on the glass of
businesses . I just couldn't get enough of it. '59 Chevy's are my "CHRISTINE".
i was in traffic at a stop light on August 16, 1977 when I heard the news of Elvis' death.
I wasn't a fan of rock n roll before.
I learned the hard way it's a danger to be obsessed because I got into a bad accident & the car was
completely smashed up & demolished. It wasn't worth fixing & much cheaper to buy a better one.
I was only a 17 year old punk kid . My dad bought me my 2nd car in 1978 a '57 Bel Air 4 door hardtop
just like the one he bought in 1957.
I sold it & made a profit same year. i bought a 2nd '59 2 door Impala in 1979 in mint condition with
my own money. It wasn't as exciting as my first red '59 I wrecked. I didn't wreck this one.
In 1980 I passed on a '59 Impala convertible for $1,200 it was nice but it had 3 on the tree, new white top
black paint & red interior. But all the side chrome was missing & also the front grille. It turned me off
I'm not into projects. Same year I passed on another '59 2 dr Impala in mint condition for $1,200
I wanted the car but I recall spending hours at the sellers house thinking about it.
I decided not to buy it because I already had 2 before & it gets old buying the same car.
I bought a '59 Ford Skyliner retractible instead. I took the '59 Chevy's for granted assuming they would always
be cheap cars. So I've had lots of other cars '57 Chevy's , '56 Buick, '55 Old's had 3 '60 Chevy's etc.
I did buy one more '59 2 door Impala in 1998 same color like my first car in 1977. I never got over that
terrible accident & I wanted that red "CHRISTINE" back.
I had to finance it the '59 Chevy's were now sought after.I did the same thing I did when I was 17
I started staring at the car again I hardly ever drove it. I got obsessed again the car made my heart race giving me goose bumps
I sold the car & paid off the bank & I moved to England for 3 years to pursue my music career.
I sold the car thru a dealer & he found a buyer & the dealer told me when the buyer drove off in
the '59 Impala the brakes went out & the car crashed into trees & bushes & crashed into a bldg. & he almost stacked it up.I'm glad I got out of that car
But I still love '59 Chevy's & I wowed the '59 Chevy will be my last car before I die.
They are my "CHRISTINE" As a kid in the 1960's my next door neighbor & best friend's dad
drove a '58 Chevy station wagon named "LUCIFER". i never gave pet names to my cars.
I want another '59 I'll settle for a 4 door I always liked the flat tops.

Nice Belair!Equipped just right, but that red is what makes it...
Happy to read you enjoy this "Nice" red car :-)
Just picked one up this morning can’t wait to start building it!
Hi Tony, Congratulations :-) Hope it comes out the way you like it, Lou
Always been a Chevy guy, drove a 1960 Biscayne, a 1964 Bel Air, a 1973 Chevy Vega and a 2000 Chevy S-10 pick up.
Hi Tom, Happy to read you've driven some cool cars :-) Lou
Here I am again. My second car (my first was a '56 Chevy 210 2-door post with a 265 and a 3 speed) was a '58 Chevy 150 with a 348 bored out to 370 with a few other goodies. Loaned it to friend to go pick up his girlfriend a mile away for my girlfriend's and her prom night. I stayed at my girlfriend's house. Half mile away an elderly lady blew a red light and t-boned it. Totalled. Nobody hurt. Only had it about 6 months. Car was fast.
Hi Richard, Glad to read everybody came away ok. Lou
The 2nd time I've been watching this Bel Air segment. This car is TIMELESS, you don't get tired of seeing it over and over, BEAUTIFUL & GORGEOUS CAR, WOW!
Happy to read you enjoy this video a 2nd time. Hope you enjoy this video time and time again.
What a *sweet* ride and sweet treat for Valentine's weekend...Red, with all the bells & whistles! Love that chrome, front grill....and the fins/tail lights too! Plus, I loved the crisp, clean sounds of the opening/closing of the doors, hood & trunk. The engine sounded so smooth and it was great to hear it's power, with the header open. That would get everyone's attention! Whoever did the restoration on this '59 beauty, did an amazing, loving and *showroom* job! Awesome that it's going to an appreciative new owner and so quickly...can't blame 'em for snapping her up. Too bad it wasn't meant for your son...it would have really made a sweet 16th birthday present, but I'm sure the automotive gears are turning in your head for that special day. ; ) ....Thanks again Lou (and Dennis), for another great video and classic automobile. Cheers and Happy Valentine's to you and everyone...and remember love is 365 days of the year! : )
Hi Billy, Happy to share this "sweet ride" with you. You're on the right UA-cam Channel for sharing the love 365 if you love cars :-) Cheers, Lou
Lou , you’re so lucky to be able to ride and drive so many old classics.
Hi Chris, I do feel lucky to be able to ride in lots of FUN cars. Bonus is I'm able to share them with you too, Lou
@@loucostabile I would love it if you had a 59 Cadillac on the channel. Heck , any 50s Or 60s Cadillac for that matter.
@@chriscallen6897 Yes, the '59 Caddy with those huge fins with 'bullet' brake lenses! They seem to be more of them than Impalas?
Mmmmm, that's one clean machine! I'm an old mopar guy from the 70's. I tore down and rebuild a 1970 Plymouth Roadrunner. Bored out to 400cu in. 12 1/2 to 1 compression pistons high-rise cam. Edelbrock tarantula high-rise with 2 holly 750 double pumpers the whole nine yards, bored, balanced and blueprinted. 9.8 second quarter miler. We got 5 gallons to the mile. LOL then I rebuild a dodge 440 magnum. That little F er was some bad ass car. God I miss those days. You got a real nice car there pops! Good luck selling it!

@@loucostabile Yea I forgot to tell you guys but now I remember when I was 17 in 1974 me and my best friend drove my 1967 chevy belair down to key west florida. Our first stop in the Keys was Grassy key. We saw a sign on the side of the road that read Grassy Key Farm Fresh Eggs. So we turned into this sand road and ended up at a nude beach! My buddy got his butt so sun burned that he couldn't sit down for 2 days! LOL. I love any old car. My mom had a 66 red malibu convertible when I was 14. THE GOOD OLD DAYS are still in my heart and always will be even though I'm a very young 64!
I remember seeing one of them in our backyard , ! my dad worked for the local Chevrolet dealership, I was just a little boy he explaned to me 🔧 about the Dump plugs and opened my eyes about horsepower

You're quite a salesman Lou! Nice car and video!
LOL...he is! :D

All the GM 59 cars were great, I might be a bit bias since I was born that year. That one is in far better shape than most and scoots right along.
Hi Jeeper, Happy to read you and this car both have the same birth year :-) Lou
With the headers off, it sounds like a dragster. What a great car! Thanks, Lou!
Hi Brian, Happy to read you enjoy this "great car!" :-) I think this one is great too. My pleasure sharing this one with you, and you're welcome, Lou
I love these stripped down cars with dog dish hub caps the most
I like this one too :-)
That was a quick sale of this beautiful Bel Air. Congrats to the new lucky owner.
My dad had a white with red interior '59 Impala, automatic with a small block V8 (no 348 tri-power for sure).
This brings back good memories of our family car back then.
Thanks Lou.

What a beautiful restoration on that masterpiece. I love your show Lou . In fact , I am addicted to it .🥰
Hi Andrew, High praise for this car! Ok if you're addicted, a couple of things to help each other 1) Watch the commercials though (or as much as you can, as then pays me so I can share with you, and hopefully get my Editor Son through college). 2) Subscribe 3) "click on the bell icon" so you can see all the new posts 4) watch two episodes before bed for sweet dreams :-) Glad you're along for the ride, Lou
@@loucostabile Thanks. I just clicked on the bell icon. Looking forward to watching as many new posts that you can throw my way . 😃
Beautiful car. My Dad bought a 1959 Biscayne, same body only less glitz. It was a six cylinder three on the column, rubber floor mats (no carpets), radio delete, blue with absolutely no trim. Probably somewhere on the back of the lot but it was economical and served our family for ten years. This Belair is stunning and the documentation, restoration, and low production numbers, makes it rare and unique. '59s did not survive for many reasons. The market is on fire for all models. I can see why your friend pulled the trigger. That was a steal. Thanks for sharing.
Hi Skinner Hound, Happy to read this car brings back memories of your Dads car :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
Sounds like heaven.
Happy to read you enjoy the sounds from this car :-) I like them too!
@@loucostabile That's one of the things I like about the factory vacuum-operated secondary carbs -- it doesn't take any more manual effort to actuate them, and it's like a treat when they unknowingly kick in!
This car does not suffer from pedal deficiency. It has all three!
Just the way we like it :-)
Ahhhh, the ol "W" mill... The 348/409 was a great engine and that car made Chevy a serious competitor in NASCAR.
Hi James, Happy to read you enjoy the engine in this car :-) Lou
What an awesome time piece. Loved the story, and ride along, thank you Lou. I posted on another site, and won't go into detail here. Just wondering, what the rear gear ratio is, seems like a long whine between shifts, for a 4 speed. In 64, I had a 61 348 with the 350 horse, Muncie 4 speed, 3.70 posi rear gear, in a 59 Impala sport coup. I ran Mickey Thompson specials, 8.50 by 14, on 6.5 in. chrome reverse rims then, and could not keep traction in 1st gear, even from a roll. I remember back then, the 348's were referred to as, "Boat Anchors". I'll tell you what Lou, that 348 of mine, was one screaming engine at 6,000 rpm's. Uncle Sam knocked on my door, and that was the end of my great 59, and the 348. Thanks again Lou for a great video, you'r the man.
Hi Ed, Happy to read you think this car is "awesome" :-) I think so too. Sounds like you had a great car too. My pleasure sharing this one with you, and you're welcome, Lou
So interesting back in those days even a bare bones car had a beautiful designed dashboard.
Hi X K, Happy to read you enjoy the dashboard on this one :-) Lou

Lou, That 59 BelAir Was Built At My Janesville Plant, Which Is Closed Now..I Remember Those Cars Coming Down The Assembly Line. You Could Order The Biscayne, BelAir, Impala, That Year. Which Could Have Been Installed In 2-Dr Sedans, 4-Dr Sedans, Wagons, And 2Dr Hardtops,4Dr Hardtops, Or Convertables. Those With 283 2-BBl, 283-4BBL, 348-4BBL, or 348 TriPower, Motors Or Fuel Injection was Also A Factory Option That Year. The 4-Speed Was Available In All Those Models, With Those RPO Engine Options. As Well As Optional Posi Rear Axle Ratios. GM Offered The 4-Speed In All Their B-Body Production Models Across The GM Spectrum, No Matter If You Were An Buick, Olds, Pontiac Gear Head It Could Have Been Ordered Back In Those Days. Do I Miss Those Days Brother. Thanks For The Memories. John.

When you said he was a dealer I thought you were going to say he ordered that car himself, but that car is a lot older than 40 years.
I wonder if any car other than those 59 Chevy's ever had a POSITRACTION emblem, it has to be very unique.
Thank you.
Hi C Smith, I agree, I thought the "POSITRACTION emblem" was unique too (and cool) :-) You're welcome, Lou

Hi Dave, Thank you, yes, a real treat to drive this one :-) Lou
Lou, thanks for doing this one on a '59 2-door Bel-Air mid-series, and not the typical restored 2-door fancier Impala so typically seen!
Hi Rob, My pleasure sharing this one with you :-) Lou
Right @ the start, Lou. You omitted pointing out that that "jewelry", as you call it, on the hood immediately indicates that crossed flags mean there's a 348 under the bonnet. BTW, that specific idler pulley was also correct from the factory on the later ('61-'65) 409.
Hi M20L35, Good news! You shared your knowledge on the items I missed. That is what the comments are for. Helping out if I missed something, Well done! Lou
WOW! One of my favorite model (from '59 -'61, then '65 through '70s). It would've been nice for a red convertible, but other than that, this model is also a BOMB!, SUPER! love it when you guys fired up. It gives me CHILL! WHOA!
Hi Vern, Happy to receive a "WOW!" from you :-) BTW, here is that convertible you're looking for, Lou ua-cam.com/video/QVxk8xk-WZs/v-deo.html
This is a museum piece! Irreplaceable if damaged. I believe it has a couple of options not mentioned. Windshield washers and padded dash were options. Asking a LOT of money but where would you find another one? Those country roads scare me more than city roads. Never know when some old farmer will pull out of a side road?

Beautiful 'Cat Eyes' Chevy. The person that ordered this one thinks similar to me. Big engine, four speed, posi, cut outs... The radio would have been an afterthought, but the heat would have been a must here in the midwest. I also agree with the previous owner about being afraid to take it out. It's so perfect that I think I would have terrible anxiety every time. Thanks for sharing this CLEAN ride. Take care. EDIT: You are so lucky to have been able to drive and experience this car.

What a beauty! I hesitate to wonder what this gentleman paid for a true nut and bolt restoration with NOS parts. The only clue to this top of the line Super Turbo Thrust 348 are the dual exhaust and the crossed flags in the front of the hood. The horsepower wars were just beginning in ‘59-‘60 and this baby is a great example.

We had 2 59 Chevys growing up, a blue one and red one. One had a 348 ( single four ) and one had a straight 6. Was good cars to take to the Drive In movies :)
Thanks. Interestingly, my Neighbor Friend had a 59 to use a lot; we got to many @ Drive In”Movies ,and lot of work, hangouts in 1962-3(?); before he switched to tri-Fives , mild custom.. The 59 was a v8?, auto, 2 DR , ALL BLUE, nice enough: this sleeper is spectacular.....

This is your best video yet! I absolutely love the 1959 Chevrolet! It happens to be my all time favorite Chevy ever built! The one in this video is a gorgeous example of power and performance. This particular Bel-Air has the look of the budget model Biscayne, but it's definitely a sleeper, equipped with the Tri-Power 348 big block, with a 4 speed, and posi-traction rear end, and I'll bet that Bel-Air will flat out run! I'm drooling with envy after watching this video!
Hi Michael, High praise for this video & car :-) Lou

Hi Gaz the K's Modelworx, Happy to read you enjoy the looks and sounds of this car :-) Me too. My pleasure sharing this one with you, and you're welcome, Lou
It's nice to see a 2-door Bel-Air that's been so lovingly restored like this. I think 'collectors' lop the Bel-Air in with the (mostly unloved) plain Jane Biscayne. The Bel-Air still has some.. some of the nice touches of the Impala. I love the fender ornaments. (I don't think they're on the Biscaynes.) They're a little reminiscent of the great ones on the '55 and '56 Chevy. I wish that ornament had been retained on the '57, but noooooo, it got the 'double guns' that went took away from the beautiful hood otherwise. That's the least of the '57s problems though, with so many (convertibles) ruined by the continental kit, fender skirts, extra mirrors. Uggghk.

Another Favorite! Love these. Back in the day I only seen these looking rough as they were 13 years old back in 1972 and I was 10 years old in 1972. OMG I watched to the End and seen you delivering it. Wow.
Hi gene978, Happy to read this one is a favorite :-) Glad to read a "Wow" too, Lou
The first car I drove was my parents 59 Chevy Parkwood wagon, red with white top. Unfortunately it was a 235 powerglide but what a pretty car. My best friend had the same car you have restored, probably not the nascar version, but 348 tripower 4 speed with posi.

lou you get the best cars!
Thank you Kenneth :-)
In the '50's and 60's dollar for dollar General Motors arguably made the best vehicles on the Planet. The bodies out lasted the competition even in the rust belt and the powertrains outperformed all competition.

@@loucostabile My Pleasure. BTW Back in 1962 I owned a '59 Impala Convertible Red 283 Powerglide. The prior owner bored the 283 to 301 and installed a cam, dual exhaust and 4 barrel carb. The car was really fast from 30mph up. I went on to own a '63 Bel Air 2dr 300hp 327 three speed. I could beat '64
GTO's with that car. The my all time favorite. a brand new '69 SS396 350hp four speed 2dr hard top. Thank you for your reply.
Wow that's a rare one with the nascar 348 tri power engine ! Nice one Lou !
Hi Steve S, Happy to receive a "Wow" on this one :-) Glad you enjoy this car, Lou
In 1959, Chevy offered SEVEN (7) 348 W motors, ranging from the base 4 bbl 300 hp to the top tri power 11.25:1 compression 335 hp.
Seven choices, now your lucky to get even two.
BTW that is a RARE '59 Impala.
Hi Chris, Thank you for sharing your knowledge, and happy to read you appreciate the rarity of this car, Lou
Uncel K car in 1963 avocado green...was always happy to get a ride with him in such an airplane looking car.

In Canada, the Bel Air was also called a Pontiac Laurentian, with Chevy motors, and wasn't a wide tracking Catalina, that used Pontiac motors.

Hi Dan, Glad to read you enjoy this video :-) Lou
One of my bucket list cars. It’s beautiful
Happy to read this one is on your bucket list :-)
The back is not too long, very proportion, unlike the early 60s model influenced by Cadillac, and of course a GM trademark, yet regardless of long back for both Chevy and Cadillac are still STUNNING.
Happy to read you think this one is "STUNNING" :-)
Very nice Chevy! My dad’s first new car was a 1959 Chevy two door, similar to this but green and with 6 cylinder base engine. He loved that car. My mother did not share his enthusiasm for it.
Dennis’ example is beautiful and iconic. Thanks to both of you for sharing this.
Hi Jeff, Happy to read this one brings back memories of Dad's 1st car he loved :-) Regarding Mom, only 8 percent of my audience is woman, so she's probably in the majority of most women regarding car interest :-) My pleasure sharing this one with you, and you're welcome, Lou
@@loucostabile lol - yes, you are right on the mark!
Wow, I got my license in 66, a few of these were still around. The only sedan available with a 4 speed in 59, they ruled the drag strips and took the NASCAR championship.

Hi Andrew, Happy to read this car brings back memories of your Dads car :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
Lou that unit looked like it was made today! Such a neat old sleeper car. Loved the color the lines of the car the tri-power engine and the interior looks right in color for this unit. He has the neatest rare cars in his stable. Too bad he is getting rid of it as that for sure is a keeper. I know the new owner is just going to love this unit and I hope he keeps it up like this gentleman does. Just a neat stock unit this is. Loved the engine sound both ways and the ride along. This is one unique unit for sure!!! I bet he hates to get rid of this unit as he was having a blast in there driving it with those huge smiles! I was a year old when this car was made the 1959 and 1960 model years were awesome. Thanks for sharing Lou!!!
Hi Steve, You're right, the condition of this car is like going right to the showroom in 1959 :-) Happy to share the ride, and the sounds that come with this car. My pleasure sharing this one with you, and you're welcome, Lou
