I'm an African pianist who just today was wondering what concert halls hold for pianists of African descent - I mean pianists of colour - and I've been fortunate to see this video. Thanks for the music but more importantly thanks for letting me know there's hope. With love from Sierra Leone.
Yes, it is exciting to see classical musicians of African descent. Frankly I haven't seen many at all and I know they are out there. So it is great that I came across this and I hope to see more African classical musicians perform!
It's easy for the remarkable nature of the Kaneh-Mason family to eclipse the achievements of individuals in the family. This performance is proof that Isata is world-class in her own right.
Last week-end Jeneba kanneh-mason broke me in tears with her fabulous playing on BBC competition, Sheku Kanneh-Mason let me without voice after his memoral perform on royal wedding; and today it you Isata. I don't have words to express so happy i'm. Marvelous family i'm so happy. Go ahead. Bravisimiss
JOHN JULIUS EYE NGOA Before the Royal Wedding, I never heard of this family. Since then I listen to their performances daily for hrs. Unbelievable if I didn't hear and see it for myself. They are simply amazing.
Yes, I am from the Bahamas and was a student at the Royal Academy of Music in the early 1970's. I see where they have added a Junior Academy. I listened to Isata's playing with a sense of healthy pride at what people of African descent can do. Not only did she demonstrate a confident virtuoso technique in a challenging concerto, but was able to express her own individuality in the bruvara passages. I seem to get images of Martha Argerich and Khatia Buniatishvili. Keep up the good work and feel encouraged. I believe a very successful and rewarding future lies ahead for Isata.
Isata does not need to be compared with Argerich or Buniatishvili. She belongs already to the top ten of piano players. The interpretation of this Rach 2 is sublime as well as of the 1st movement of Beethoven piano conc 3 arranged at home due to the coronavirus pandemia.
I am a classical pianist from the same institution as the Kenneh-Masons. I am 100% certain from experience that a number of people of African descent have performed at this world class level or close to it. However, there needs to be many more with the passion. Many are called to play at this great and high level. We must set the example like the Kenneh-Masons by exposing people of African descent to this kind of music. Like the European and the Asians, we must invest in the best possible teachers - that is the secret of their greatness and prowess.
I am African American 66 I was raised on this music this happens to be my favorite my mother played many recording artists from Rachmaninoff Staruss Debussey to Ella Brook Benton Ray Charles to the Mormon tabernacle motown rascals classic IV were mine but I love them all
To the people of the African diaspora: Clasical music has been part of our heritage since the days of Haydn and Mozart. As a matter fact, Beethoven was not pure European. From the 1700's there have been 300 clasical composers of African heritage. Most noted is the African-American Dr. George Walker of Jamaican descent.
I loved pianist Barry Douglas playing this Rachmaninov concerto, he was always #1 with me. Khatia Buniatishvili was my second favorite but now I think Isata Kanneh-Mason is my new favorite!
For all its limitations of technical sound, this is example of sublime playing by Isata Kanneh-Mason. I have seen Rach 2 concerts in better arena, with showy pianists, but Isata's sound is pure magic, a godlike treat to the ears...
To those making comments about the sound balance - this is not a professional recording (it's probably not legal either!). It was done with a simple camcorder or phone from a disadvantageous location. It's surprising it's as good as it is - just enjoy the playing.
You have a beautiful sound, and play giving total devotion to the music you play with honesty and effortlessly too. BRAVO!!! You have incredible natural instinct, you make pieces your own. We truly enjoyed the performance.
Ive heard this concerto by so many world famous pianists but none have given me such intense chills and goosebumps like this. Amazing! Please keep up the good work and spread your interpretations throuhout the world!
They are indeed marvelous. The Bessonov brothers (and mother and father) from St Petersburgh Russia comes to mind as a family in this category. A bit behind age-wise, but very much in the same category of mind blowing talent.
@@yaelcanetty7010 Even the Bach family did not have SEVEN master musicians! And these young people are most definitely MASTERS of the art. Never before in history!
Concerto #2 in c - my absolute favorite. It inevitably & automatically starts tears flowing. I was in high school (I'm 79 now), my best friend couldn't wait to come to my house from her dentist, with the Concerto, borrowed from him, that he played while working on her teeth. This album was in 4, hard vinyl discs. She broke one and practically had a stroke. The dentist tried to reassure her, but she saved up to replace it, finding that it was indeed quite old and a new album was a more
...a flexible, single disc, which she bought even though he told her to forget it. We were 2 young black girls who listened mesmerized. My favorite recordings are Rubinstein, Ashkenazy and Moura Lympany.
Watching this because I live in Germany and can't watch the BBC's recording of Isata and Sheku at the Proms yesterday! Gotta have my fix! I've always adored this concerto.
Wonderful to hear this... and I'd really love to watch/hear a recording with real microphones. This is a gorgeous piece and both soloist and orchestra are first rate... the recording not so much... but thanks for sharing it nonetheless. What an amazing family... filled with gifted artists.
Another fabulous Kanneh-mason video. Well done Isata and thanks, Stuart. Please can we have more from Braimah, I love his distinctive and distinguished playing. I've almost worn out the existing videos.
Beautifully poised and well controlled performance. A remarkably talented musician. Pity the audience ruined the mood by applauding after each movement, esp between the 2nd and 3rd! I love her playing!
This was two years ago and she’s perfect!! Just phenomenal playing and with such feeling Yes....what a family And how generous they are sharing such gifts to the world They are ALL talented ..... The little one too- How lovely to be able to listen to such joy in my living room in Virginia while I watch tennis from London on mute!! Two of my joys in life!!💕💕
The most glorious aspect of youth is it’s vast potential coupled with the mindset of application towards realization. This young lady exemplifies this so wonderfully. Every man has his several gift of God. In that women are the glory of man we are able to bask in that glory which God has ordained for the grace and edification of the entire family of man. The Kanneh-mason family are an extremely industrious unit. I would love to sit with the parents for Q and A. They are truly a radiant couple with great breath and depth of love and understanding to have raised such a worthy clan of talented children. I hope to eventually attend one of their concerts in the states. Though we are currently under the cloud of coved-19 it in no way defines the resilient spirit of the spiritual. PWG
did anyone else hear an audience member whisper "Wow!" at like11:58 or so... haha 'wow' was my thoughts exactly so it was funny to hear that in the video.
Brilliant performance! There were moments when the conductor allowed the orchestra to drown the piano, but overall excellent. Quite a weekend for the Kanneh-Mason family!
This proves Isata is a very accomplished musician in her own right. This conductor should have paid a lot more attention to orchestral balance and the soloist.
achates11, I wonder if the sound of the orchestra overpowering the piano might be due to just the quality of the recording? Perhaps if we were privy to the live performance, the soloist would be more prominent in those portions?
I agree with the comment regarding her playing at times, being too overwhelmed by the orchestra. There should be a greater contrast at times. It was a bit annoying during the first movement. It's Rachmaninoff for goodness sakes! But go Isata, so proud of you and what a blessing you are to all of us; the whole lot of you!!
I think it is mostly due to the not so great recording. No idea what they used to record it, but there certainly were no specific microphones for the piano, which is essential. I think, had you sat in the audience, you would have heard the piano much more defined. In the sections where you can hear it though: I'm saying this although I really do not like Rachmaninoff that much, but let's not argue taste, I can still judge the quality of a musician even if he or she plays music I do not like. And this was impressive.
I agree - but so funny I've seen this happen a lot with this piece. With Argerich, Grimaud, Yuja Wang, etc. the orchestra can just swallow up the gorgeous piano
Exactly what the elitist snobby piano world needs - a true undeniable talent that carries and delivers. I hope this also hooks more young people as well. @5:35 - excellent lower voicing
Some here think that her skin color or tribe is notable. But it ISN'T. Its all about MUSICALITY. Which in her case is CONSIDERABLE! She deserves a better orchestra!
Great playing I wonder if she has ever heard the song All By Myself by Eric Carmen he plagiarised whole parts of this piece, esp the parts at around 12-14 minutes in this video, and revisited later on at the 22minute.
I hate when listeners clap hands between parts. They destroy meaning of brake between them. Isata is powerfull pianist. Just in some moments force tempo too much, but with age, she shall correct this. Bravo!
Isata is absolutely BRILLIANT!! However, the sound engineer did not mike her piano properly. As the lead instrument, she should not have been drowned out by the accompaniment. Plus, the camera should have been better placed.
Brilliant. She deserves a professional camera crew and top-notch sound engineers.
Well observed. Well said.

Although I wouldn’t call Alexis Ffrench is a classic pianist, he is also an amazing musician I absolutely love. 🤓 I listen to him everyday.
Isata's, and her sibling's, maternal grandfather was from Sierra Leone.
There are many..to name a few..look up Chineke! Orchestra, Buskaid Soweto String Ensemble....
No one should be looking at skin color to check out musicians. That is the wrong way to view music.
It's easy for the remarkable nature of the Kaneh-Mason family to eclipse the achievements of individuals in the family. This performance is proof that Isata is world-class in her own right.

It's as if Isata's hands are performing a graceful ballet over and across the piano keys. Visual+Sound= Bonus.

Play! I love ALL OF YOU!!!!
It’s plenty of us who are exposed to this music, but the world has to want to see us play it…

How I miss going to concerts. This amazing performance is so uplifting especially during the pandemic. Bravo!!!!!
My favorite piano concerto! First time seeing a black women pianist preform it. Love it, love her whole family!
You have a beautiful sound, and play giving total devotion to the music you play with honesty and effortlessly too. BRAVO!!! You have incredible natural instinct, you make pieces your own. We truly enjoyed the performance.

You’re amazing Isata! This is one of my favorite piano concertos and you play it with so much expression...Bravissima!!!
The Kanneh-Mason family is mind blowing. Is there a more gifted family in the world?
Maybe the Bachs, a few centuries ago😉
KLM Hooked Moore there is not. If there is ...reveal yourselves

What a beautifully felt ending to the second movement! I don't know that I've ever heard it so sensitively played ...
But 3 part was terrible badly!😮😢

Brava! Beautiful and brilliant performance. Congratulations, Isata!
This lovely music is right under her hands. What a beautiful, able artist on the piano. We are enriched by her presence!
What a magic performance. Beautifully portrayed by this young woman.

Isata Kanneh -Mason Wow Girl just Awesome perfomance
just seen Jeneba Kanneh-Mason play this at the Bath Phil- incredible-show got a standing ovation!
She is a blessing to her family & classical music lovers all over the world.
The music is superb. I never tire of hearing the piano and cello played by these two fibe musicians. Thank you.

Makes me cry …. The most gorgeous of music pieces played magnificently by Isata K M and orchestra……thank you all for bringing Joy to the World.
That “wow” in the audience after the first movement was well deserved.
Simply beautiful that is all. Wow wow wow
Isata is an extremely talented performer. Her technique is beautiful. She is already a world class artist. Beautiful Performance!
The talent, artistry, technical mastery and musical understanding all come powerfully through. What a joy to take it in. All the best.

I think the problem is largely down to microphone placement. I may be wrong but it does sound like there is only one, probably on the handheld camera.
