Excellent TEDx talk!! Fabian's talk was technological, entertaining and displayed wonderful design. That's what TED stands for. Thank you for this post.
This video makes me wonder: Will your inner child ever disappear if you don't stop seeing and being marvelled by the magic of every little thing that surround you, even acknowledging the science behind it?
This young man is making art. He is choosing the medium he works with. He is choosing the colors. He is manipulating the image. He is capturing the photograph. He is creating his form of Art. I imagine your comments are similar to those made by many people when they first viewed Jackson Pollock's work. Lighten up! Let art be Art be ART.
Fascinating, as a result I'm very tempted to try out some photography using ferrofluid. It appears that it is possible to purchase small vials of this stuff for about £15.
We did not see actual waves, or any kind of typical wave pattern, no. But if you think physically about it he did indeed make the sound waves visible. Sound wave is a periodic change of air pressure in a certain location. That change of pressure is force and this force gives air particles kinetic energy and they move, what we cannot see. The sand followed the pressure change and was moved/ pushed with the air particles, so the sand made for us visible how the air particles moved and this is literally the sound wave. So of course it is making them visible. And since sound waves through air are longitudinal waves with no transversal movement of its amplitude u dont see this kind of wave u probably would expect to see anyways - like a sinus curve I mean.
We are starting to see that TED talks aren't really such a mark of distinction. Here is a perfect case-in-point. He's pretty impressed with himself and this is entertaining to look at but its not art. At its lowest common denominator art can be defined as a series of organized sensations. Implied in this is that people are doing the organizing. Not the laws of physics. You might stretch this to say that by photographing the science display he is 'organizing' something but its pretty clear here he is just capturing the moment more than working with intention to organize things in his own intention... On a separate note its a popular but unsophisticated misconception that art is about emotion. Art might refer to emotion (usually this is the worst kind of art, think a painting of a child crying.... at best the subject matter such as Romeo and Juliet which is really an art of literature more than of emotion). Art might make us feel emotion, but its not actually emotion and causing emotion is not its goal.
This is a great video, very interesting, but it's way, way, WAY too quiet! I have my tablet at max volume and I can bearly hear him! (At least there were captions)
unbelievably mind-blowing dumb-a.... !! was it really a Ted talk or some stand-up comedy ? he is totally impressed with his self and kinda impressed with his -if really his- little childy experiments ! what a shame !! then is he really naming that thing of bursting tiny colorful particles into air as "sound wave drawing" @_@ (are you serious ??!)
As a former student of science , I can say, actually it was science that made me realize I love art. Strange thing.
It is art that made me realise that I love science haha! Such a joy
I feel you! I fell in love with the beauty of science
Me too
As an art student, I can say, it was art that made me realize I love science ^-^
As a former student of Art and Design, I can say that it was art and I love science already which makes it even more awesome.
This guy is amazing!! So humble but so smart and so appreciative of the beauty of science

Personally, knowing the science behind something makes me marveled by every little thing all the more
I almost laughed at the beginning when he said " I'm gonna start my talk by stop talking"

I love the way that the Dr Luke Rendell describes the language in emotive terms rather than cold scientific terms... So refreshing!
♡"Finding the eye's to see" loved your work Fab : ) ♥

It's not really making sound waves visible, all he really did was give it some base, and the sand bounces.
yep, kinda underwhelming
+ProxyMouse If you really want to see sound waves made into art, see Jerobeam Fenderson's oscilloscope music.

the sound wave visualization reminds me of the enigma; if a tree fall in a forest, and no one is present to see it fall, does it make an noise
Very interesting....unrelated but anyone notice his resemblance to Ryan Reynolds?

I have homework and when does he say how science and art work together
identify the artworks produced
by technology
Haha taena
Now THATz Dancing With The "Stars!"
Very cool! Also check out the Anguinart channel for the perfect marriage of art and science.
