Hey Darwin, I have a question for you from the perspective of a fellow thru-hiker who knows exactly where you're coming from. I'm just wondering what your thoughts are on the recent controversial request from the ATC that people refrain from even day hiking on the AT. I totally understand why they would recommend staying away from certain hot spots that are seeing a lot of foot traffic right now, but as someone who lives right near Gorham NH, and as someone who's thru-hiked the AT, I know that there are many many places where you can day hike without endangering trail communities or seeing many people at all. I agree with everything else that they've recommended, I just feel as though this step is a big overreach. More than ever people need to be encouraged to enjoy the outdoors in a way that is responsible for their mental health - especially as unemployment skyrockets. Maine's government is even taking steps to encourage it. They absolutely should consult with local trail organizations and request that people stay away from places like McAfee Knob, Newfound Gap, Mount Washington, and other crowed places. But push people away from the trail entirely? I don't think its a good move. It sucks because, like you, I have great respect for the ATC and I don't want to go against them, but I think they're dead wrong on this one. Love you Darwin, you're a great inspiration to myself and many others in our community.
Lots of respect for you brother, you represent the hiking community so well. I had a 3 day back country trip planned for this coming weekend (Coosa Backcountry trail at Vogel right next to Blood Mountain). I last checked and they said they were open and in my mind being solo out on a little used wilderness trail made sense. But after hearing you and thinking through this I am going to postpone it. What if something happened and I needed search and rescue or a number of other things happened that required others to have to put themselves at risk to help me? Any way thanks for being the voice of reason, so respectful. What you say relates more than just the hiking community and fellow hiker trash, it is also a good way to live in general. Have a great day, and be safe out there.
@@MrBallenTotallyCounter I definitely hear you, kind of in the same boat of thought. I have a couple of lesser used backcountry trails I love to do solo multi night trips on. I actually just canceled one I had for this weekend after listening to this video and thinking through this. My thinking is that no matter how good you are, there is always a chance that you get in trouble (maybe not lost or succumbing to the elements if you have good skills), but what happens if you break a leg, have a medical emergency of some kind, etc? Search and Rescue and other local follks are going to have to come together and go rescue you. Then you take up resources getting to a hospital and being in a hospital. (heck you could get in a serious car accident just driving there and back needing first responders, police, rescue, hospital). All of these people involved are having to put themselves out there to rescue you, when you didn't really need to be out there. Believe me, I'm with you, but I think we all need to not go out unless we absolutely have to. Any way, hopefully this blows over soon, I was really needing some solo time in Natures Temples. Have a great day
@@Hangs4Fun I hadn't really thought about the strain on the medical system if an accident were to happen on trail. That is definitely a good point. It's a really interesting question as to whether or not that risk outweighs the risk of having stressed out/potentially unemployed people feeling like they can't go outside at all. Definitely has given me something to think about, thank you!
“Be hiker trash not trashy hikers” That says it all! Support your hiking community not tear it apart! Enough with the negativity please. Lets start helping each other and supporting each other in the common bond that brought us all together - hiking!
Totally enjoyed meeting Frozen's 2020 class - I'll look forward to you returning in 2021 - good luck the rest of the summer and until next year, stay safe!!!
As a physician hiker I want to thank you for this video. You are spot on. The best trail magic is caring, giving but also, knowlegable of what the trail is all about. Thanks.
AT2020 classmate here. After 319 miles I had to make the same tough decision of coming home. Thank you for a positive response to this sad situation in a sea of negativity and hate towards our classmates who are still out there. We need our trail alumni and hiking community now more than ever. I will help anyone in need who is trying to get off trail or to a shelter in place location. Hoping this situation ends soon for all of us so we may continue our 2020 dreams.
WILD ON THE TRAIL , I have been following you since the beginning and love your outlook. I was wondering if you were still on trail. I hope you will continue once this passes, in the next month or so.
Thanks everyone! I met so many great people out there and my only hope is that our home communities can heal and we can return to the trail we all fell in love with.
I was also following you Wild and was looking for your next video to see if you were still hiking or that you got off. Like Darwin says here, I'm sure it was a very tough decision but a very good one indeed. I'll be looking for your return and also Taylers.
A large amount of hikers look up to you and Dixie and a few others I can't think of. I am so glad that you both have spoke up about the importance, of not spreading this, especially to small towns that can't handle a pandemic. Your videos are greatly appreciated. Hopefully we all can get back on the trail soon, safely and healthy!
Right on Darwin!! I started the PCT on Monday march 16th and by friday myself and 2 others managed a ride back to san diego, for no other reason than the PCTA sending out the notification. By saturday I was on a flight back home to Philly. I am now in a 2 week self quarantine to make sure I am good and won't infect my family. Thanks for using your influence to try and get others to do the right thing!!! This hiking community is amazing and we should all strive to keep it amazing. Stay healthy now and hike later, the trails aren't going anywhere.
Thanks a lot Darwin. My wife is in healthcare and while different areas are affected differently, this is definitely a real thing. Your help is sincerely appreciated. We're all in this together.
Mad respect for you, man, MAD. Honored to be your friend - and stuff like this is why. No one should shame anyone - EVER. ❤️ Love you! - Chica & Sunsets
Tks for using your influence to ENCOURAGE hikers to hop off the trail. You have made a difference in the decisions of several hikers as noted here and may very well have saved lives in communities that serve us hikers. Hopefully once the emotions and anger dissipate along with this virus and we get back to normal, the hiker community will be stronger than ever.
You said exactly what needs to be said. I 100% support your decision and the actions you are taking. Even though it sucks for all of us, we are in the boat. We all just want to make sure the ones that we love are safe and health along protecting as many people as possible from getting sick. Thank you for this video
Darwin, from a fellow hiker and nurse, thanks for your opinion and respect of others! The best thing is to stay clear of as many people as possible, this kind of consideration can save many.
Thank you Darwin - went off the trail yesterday - fly back to Switzerland to take care of my family - your videos are always full of respect for everyone.
THAT’S exactly what our community needed to hear. No shaming, no judging just simply compassion. Calling for all of us to reach out to those still on trail to see if they are ok and to make ourselves available if they decide to get off trail for a bit. We’re all in this together. This is a GLOBAL PANDEMIC. We all need each other in these tough times. THANK YOU for sharing this video. It’s just what we needed to here. Especially me.
Hi from Bergamo, Italy. I really hope everybody in the world will follow this advice, it's very important for all of us. We were not able to predict that this sickness would come to us so quickly, since you can, please do your best to avoid more problems. Postpone your hike, stay at home, or soon the problem won't be just your hike, but all the things you normally do in your life. A big (virtual) hug from Italy
I've never done a thru hike and I've been that person saying why are these people getting off the trial, isn't that a better place to be right now. Thanks for putting it into a perspective I couldn't see, now I understand and agree.
And where, exactly, after 50, 60 miles worth of food on your back, do you figure these hikers are going to resupply?!? Huh? Dipshit? Through hikers have a huge potential to be vectors for this virus. Traveling every 3 or 4 or 5 days to a different, small community and possibly not even being aware that they are a carrier of this virus. This could decimate the medical resources of these small communities and continue the spread of this deadly virus unchecked. Educate yourself about what "through hiking" actually means. You don't hike 2600 miles non-stop without ever hitting a town, etc for resupply.
@Vegans Suck The funny thing about this uninformed comment (and I mean no offense - but it's been well reported in the news for a while) is that even relatively little known and difficult to get to trailheads have become completely overrun in my area - due to people having lost their jobs, being furloughed, kids out of school, etc. Everyone else had the same idea as you - we're not that special. So everyone flocked to the same trailheads, thinking they'd be social distancing - when they were actually getting up close and personal with frequent world travelers. It is now an invitation to infection to get out of your car at a trailhead right now. Places that would normally see a few cars on the weekend are experiencing lines of cars waiting for a spot on weekdays.
As a 40 year critical care nurse, all I can say is we ain't seen nothing yet. If you do nothing at all except "social distancing" do it 100%. Break the chain of infection. Everyone that interacts with anyone you interact with is part of a chain that includes you. All infections work this way. Thanks Darwin, excellent choice, excellent advice.
Thank you Darwin! As someone prepping for a 2022 thru-hike, I appreciate your love and care for the trail and towns. I'm also glad you are using your platform to encourage others to do the same. Much love!
Thank You for bring this message to both hikers and non hikers. My wife and I as trail maintainers with the Benton Mackaye Trail Association understand and appreciate you getting this out to others who may not yet understand the impact that countinuing their hike can have on small communities.
Thanks Darwin, I got off at Franklin too but because of a death in the family but I can't bring myself to get back out there because of just the very reason that you have discussed, I am glad that you feel the same way. Thank you Buddy
Thank you for sharing this. I spent my life rescuing people and no one is exempt from needing help their whole life. I am praying that everyone comes through this. The trails will still be there when this is over.
Whenever foreigners come to your small town or you leave then return to your small town, you're at risk of a viral outbreak. Mass hysteria from mainstream is the only reason you're all of a sudden paranoid.
Small rural areas have limited medical services. I’ve worked in many small So Colo hospitals as a per diem ICU RN. Many areas have lost their hospital recently. I was never at a place where there was a surplus of staff or empty rooms. There is not enough in the cities and there is less in the rural and small towns. Where the towns have been so welcoming and accommodating to hikers, this is not the time to overstay your welcome. It’s a hard decision to close their businesses and as profitable as hikers and tourist trade is, they’re actually choosing the public and personal health over profit. We need to do the right thing, don’t make me come out of retirement. The threat is real, no need to panic, but be smart.
Thks... Everything we need to know...not just hiking ...camping ...roadtrips and Spring Breakers...but Life is changing....We Will Be Strong Through this...Thks Darwin...and all You
Thank you for making this video, It’s so great to see the community influencers being so proactive and encouraging the community to do what is best for Public Safety. Thank you
Great video. Having all the trails, parks, and even beaches in my area closed down makes things feel like encarceration. What to do? Get better. I'll be practicing things like seeing if I can improve the speed and efficiency (especially in the wind and rain) of setting up my tarp and tents while camping in the great back yard until the great outdoors opens up. Don't let this be a problem. Make it a challenge. See what new delicious and healthy trail meals and snacks you can concoct. Gear review time for us (personally)- what works well for you? How can you improve? Grow, improve, perfect, have fun. And when it's the right time - see you on the trail. Aloha.
I cannot say this any simpler. You Sir are a good man and someone who I would want my Grandchildren to look up to as not only a highly skilled hiker but just a damn good person. Be safe.
Kudos ... you're spot on. A couple things folks may need to hear that seems to be getting lost in the headlines in our current media environment: 1. For people 20 - 50 years old, your risk of serious illness from this virus is low, but your ability to carry the virus with mild to no symptoms presents a risk in the spread of the virus to elderly people or those with compromised immune systems. 2. Just because your risk may be low, it doesn't mean you're immune ... and surviving COVID-19 doesn't mean walking away with zero side effects. There is a range of fallout for those afflicted with this thing that can stay with people for the rest of their lives. In the end, the trail will still be there. Folks on the trail aren't in the wrong place. That's some of the best social distancing you can probably do. The problem is in the resupply and town stops and the exposure of others to the virus. This thing spreads fast and is contagious in carriers who aren't displaying any symptoms. My wife is a critical care nurse in Dallas at the second largest county hospital in the nation. They have COVID-19 patients in treatment. It's a horrible disease for those who experience even what is considered "moderate" symptoms. The peak of the curve for this virus, if we are level-headed and respectful and heed the requests being made, is only 2 - 4 weeks. We're talking about a temporary inconvenience. And in a year, we'll have a vaccine for this thing for when it comes back again (good chance this thing will be a seasonal bug for a while). Take care of yourself. Take care of others. It's heartbreaking to be sidelined after the prep work it takes for a long (or thru) hike, but we're in waters nobody alive has seen before. We've had outbreaks before, but this one is bad. We owe it to ourselves and each other to do our best to be as responsive as we can to the guidance coming out of our federal, state and local agencies, the CDC, and those entrusted with the care and maintenance of the resources in question. Thanks for making this video Darwin. It is a lot of truth people need to hear. There's a lot of panic going on out there (went to 5 different stores this morning and still can't find a single pack of TP anywhere). People need to calm down, deal with the situation as it is, and be courageous in our willingness to persevere. Sometimes that means putting aside what we want (or even need) because it's the right thing to do. Part of that is understanding what others are dealing with. There's a big difference between partying at the beach during a pandemic and being stranded in the US after travelling from overseas to spend 5 - 6 months on trail. If the ATC asks folks to help, we should help. Sometimes, that may mean helping others.
I have a ton of respect for you for your choice and for making this video. You approach subjects in a very clear, respectful, and logical way. Thank you for all you do. The trail will still be there after all is done. As a small creater I will NEVER shame another hiker. Great message.
Glad you made it home safe. Thanks for being a voice a reason during these troubled times. You are a pillar of this community and this video only exemplifies that fact. Would love to see some new content on cold weather/wet weather gear/clothing strategies.
You are a good man Charlie Brown trying to educate some. Here in Canada we have snowbirds coming home and they are treating them horribly, ranting and screaming like they were lepers anytime they see an RVer. Stay safe and THANK YOU!
Thank you for giving a needed massage on why not hiking now is so important to everyone. I want all of you to know something time having an EPIC adventure is just a matter of giving this time to blow over and then trail party miles all the way to the end of the trip. Be safe
Im sorry if any of the negativity you saw was from me. I took down my posts. I just let my temper out with the thought of getting off the trail after 18 months of planning. I will come back next year and crush this journey💪👍
Excellent information explaining the situation, and very well said. One piece of advice to give to people who want to be outdoors, get outdoors near your home. I’ve seen more people getting outside - what a wonderful positive effect during a crazy time. It’s easy to keep distance, and minimal impact to the community when you’re returning home afterwards. Thank you Darwin!
I grew up in, and spent a majority of my adult life in one of the AT towns in Rural VA. Thank you!! Although I don’t live there any longer, I know the impact of this economically when there is a slow year on the trail, but I also know that a major outbreak in my home town would result in much worse consequences. Thank you again Darwin!
Thank you for taking this seriously. I’m an airline pilot , and hiker, forced to go out and interact as an “essential” occupation. You’re right, flights are VERY empty and it sucks. We WILL get through this. This will end. But not for a while. We all will suffer. Hopefully we will suffer healthily. Thank you
I was all set to get on the AT for the first time, in just a week from now. After saving money and planning for 4 years. Last week l finally thru in the towel and said it out loud... the AT is postponed till next year. I must admit l have been heart broken, and even a little bitter. Feeling completely disoriented. I needed this video from someone l admire so much to help me get my spirit right. Thank you Darwin for always being a positive and responsible influence for so many.
I was 149 miles into my AT thru and I got off trail two days ago for the same reasons ya it’s hard and post trail sucks but we all in this together everyone stay safe
Good for you, sir! Thank you for this! I know your message will be heard within the hiking community. People trust you for good reason and I admire you for using this platform to share reasonable and rational information and advice.
Thanks for posting this! Getting off of any hike SUCKS, but the sooner you do it, the sooner you can get back out there without any worries. Mad respect for your decision and using your voice for good.
I had a discussion with someone at a state park the other day in regards to the thru hikers getting off trail. I explained how much the hikers rely on the small town for resupplies. How the towns may not have enough to go around for those who live there let alone those who are just passing through. Also that if someone tried to press on hoping to find more at the next town it could lead to a health emergency on the trail. This doesn’t even cover trial magic. Getting off trail may suck, but it’s small compared to what you could go through and what others have.
Thanks for your inspiring words. I hike in the UK, my trip to the Lake District is now on hold indefinitely. Or at least until we’ve ALL got through this tragic pandemic. Take your hiker trash community spirit to your town and city community there. Help, inspire and encourage where you can with what you have. Above all stay safe sane and sanitary. Here’s hoping we can make a difference and come out the other side, some may not be so lucky. All the best.
Right on Dariwn. You are so right. Small communities are in danger with every visitor, every customer, every hiker. Its time to support the community and not endanger it. RESPECT is a powerful emotion as it does allow us to make the right decision when we may want to make a different one. INTEGRITY also does the same thing and brother you have that. Thanks for sharing a difficult message.
Thank you. You speak not just for the hiking community, but for the wider community as well. Good sense, charity, compassion, balanced judgment/responsibility. We are all in this together.
Thanks Darwin! I’ve had to cancel my section hike of the PCT in April. Leaving the trail is so rough. I respect you more for the choice you’ve made and the fact that you’re calmly asking others to do the same. Integrity lives!! We will hike again!
Thanks for putting up this video. I was scheduled to fly to ATL today and start the Approach Trail tomorrow. I made the difficult decision to delay my start for 60 days and then evaluate if things were open again. Based on what I know now, I don't think this is the year for anyone to Thru-Hike the AT or any other trail. This is a worldwide pandemic and we have to protect the small communities along the trail by respecting their safety. I just put a video up today saying just this for my subscribers. I also posted many warnings to hiker who were on the trail in the past two weeks that something bad was up and to reconsider their hikes. With respect, John from MI
Thanks for the strong positive message. You asked what we’d like to see....not sure how it would work but as someone who has backpacked but never been out in the backcountry for more than two weeks, Ithink it would be fun to have a sort of virtual campfire story time with Darwin and other thru-hikers. Idk. Thanks for all the videos. Stay healthy.
Well said brother! I would really like you to make a video about some of the gear that you have had your eyes on before that you decided not to get and why. Such as a tent, sleep system, or any other random gear!
Thank you!! As an RN, backpacker and hiker I thank you for your leadership. I had a simple weekend trip on the AT with my son planned for this past weekend and we found signs stating that camping or staying in the shelters was not permitted due to the COVID-19 pandemic, so we headed home. As someone on the front lines of this crisis a weekend of green therapy with my son would have done wonders for me mentally, but it wasn't meant to be. Again Thank You for your Leadership!!!!
Great video, nice to see a level head. Would love to see a video breaking down different parts of your daily routine, ie. What you do in the morning, what you do in the evening. Would also like to here how you pick a campsite. What happens if it gets later in the day and you can't find a good place? What are your biggest blunders on trail? Have you ever ran out of fuel? Got yourself in trouble?
I'm an infectious disease researcher who recently has come across your videos as I've been getting back into outdoors stuff as my normal hobbies aren't possible these days. Stumbled on this and just wanted to say I really appreciate that you did this, which was the right message at the right time.
I can understand how you feel, I was on an 80 day expedition with my college and was taken out last week. If you have any time a video on gear repair and or maintenance would be awesome. Happy trails
Well said. I cancelled my April 2nd start on the AT after quitting my job, buying books, apps, and non-refundable plane ticket, and I also prepared for a year. Not worth potentially spreading illness to others. I'd never forgive myself. But that's just me, it's a decision everyone needs to make for themselves. Good luck to you and snuggles this year!
Thank you for your thoughtful response. I made the decision yesterday to postpone my CDT hike, it was a hard call, but as you so eloquently point out, it was the right thing to do. Keep posting, I'll be watching.
Thanks Darwin for your speech. I live in Switzerland, it's a small country (only 8 million people), and COVID-19 is putting the country on the edge. Hundreds and hundreds of people are infected every single day. Last week, Italy recorded 800 deaths in 24hrs, so it's no joke. If we want to be able to enjoy life and go out as soon as possible, WE MUST to stay home and help each other, solidarity and humanity is the key. Sending you all my love and hope. 🙏❤️
Thanks for your honesty Darwin, we really appreciate it. Definitely beleive you made the right decision. The trail will still be there when this is over. Stay safe out there guys!
good call, wish other people would follow suite like you :) can't believe some people think they're above this and that their thru-hike is more important than community safety
Thank you so much that you are not only taking responsibility for you and your actions, but that you use your influence to send a very clear message - get off trail! I do respect and appreciate you now even more, for your boldness and beeing serious
Well said. Thumbs Up. I'am from Europe and three weeks ago I closed my business because IT IS IMPORTANT. Many small businesses are changed... taxi drivers deliver groceries, schools are online, people produce home made head masks. Restaurants are changed to takeaways. Everybody wears head masks. But the best thing to do is to stay home and avoid any contacts. LESS infected people out there = LESS pressure on hospitals, doctors and paramedics. Hiking is FUN, right? Be RESPONSIBLE now and PARTICIPATE. Stay safe. Good Luck!
No need to be sorry. You made a Selfless Decision & showed that you care more about the community. Thanks for helping to set a great example & Inspiring others! ❤️
Everybody's timing is perfect for them. You did well in getting off and much respect to you. You'll be back on trail and I'll be following your channel when you do :-)
Braids You acknowledged your mistake which is why I subscribed to your channel before I saw this post. It is good to be stubborn because it can get things done. But you still need to evaluate your position and have the strength to change your position.
Your language is awesome as it highlights your loyalty, rationality and all the other parts of your character that make you one of those guys each and every community is grateful to have! Thx for being considerate and factual in these times :)
On March 16th that's the start of lockdown here in the Philippines it seems normal maybe but here in our country the virus almost 500+ has been affected so all city here in the regional capital we had an enhanced community quarantine happening. Me I decided to go home and quarantine with my family it's be better to be at home so you can be less infected. " Stay at Home ". I been watching your blog and I love to travel and take a hike also, but for now your right RESPECT, HELP , AND PLEASE ALL GUYS STAY AT HOME . Shout-out from the philippines.
I had Postponed my hike when I got to Franklin March 20 for all the reasons you said in your video. I had lost Subscribers and I was shamed for getting off the trail, but to each their own. It was a pleasure meeting you at Neel Gap. ( Pride in the Wilderness - Hiking For The Australian Wildlife ) God Bless Everyone
Darwin, you did the right thing. New level of respect to you for what you said on respect and be a better person. Right on. On a bright side, you now have time to be with your lovely wife. As for what we would like to see, it would be nice to see more videos of you and your wife together hiking or just normal family activities. She is such a nice person.
Thank you for spreading positivity in this difficult situation. The hiking community owes you so much. Thank you for encouraging others in a kind way to make respectful decisions. As the partner of a healthcare worker, I am truly grateful. ❤️
Thanks for the video Darwin. I found myself in the same boat and ended up cancelling my 160 mile section hike from Rockfish Gap to Harpers Ferry about a week before my March 23rd start date for the same reasons you outlined. Hopefully this situation will be resolved sooner rather than later and we can all get back on the long trails.
Nice job, Darwin. I had to cancel my planned Camino hike that was scheduled for April 1st. I looked at the AT as a backup, but quickly and reluctantly accepted that would not be feasible either. It's a shame that more people don't understand the amount of support that thru hikers receive along their way. What can we do to support those who so generously support hikers? I keep thinking about all of those fantastic hostels along the way and worry how they will survive this shut down. Is there a way to support them the way we are supporting local restaurants? That said, I also wonder how the whole world is going to get thru this. Anyway, great vid, man.
Michael Comins I hope you enjoy the Camino. I have done it twice and absolutely loved it. Started in Roncesvalles... do not miss the Pilgrims mass the night you show up. Really sets the tone ... Ultreyia!
hi michael i canceled my camino hike as well.i dont think it would be possible at all.spain is completly shut down, there will be no hostels or restaurants open.this would be a hike thru a wasteland like in a videogame.townfolks would look at us like we are morons and wtf we are doin in spain.i am from germany and i was hiking for 4 days in my area.nothing is open.it was almost impossible to get my waterbottle refilled.thank you for been responsible and greetings from germany Psyco Heiko PCT99 AT03 CDT10 3x camino santiago
Thanks for making this video. I had planned on starting another AT section hike next week in Virginia to test a whole food, plant based nutrition plan for long distance hiking. But, I have cancelled my plans to drive up from Alabama. You're right! I appreciate you setting the example. This gives you even more credibility than before. I love your videos and I greatly respect your opinion on gear etc. As a matter of fact, I would say I watch more hiking videos from you than anyone else. You're authentic, professional, and an excellent teacher. You walk the talk as well. You asked for suggestions. On the AT, as you know, it's like being in a rain forest. Setting up and taking down my tent is such a tedious and time consuming process in the rain. That would be a great video: how to set up a tent in the rain while staying dry. I wear merino wool from head to toe, so I'm able to stay warm while wet, but man, it still isn't fun on the AT when it rains a lot.
Got off at mile 205 on the PCT by I-10 for the same reasons. When i started on March 8th there were a few cases in Seattle, when I got to Warner Springs there were cases across the country, when I got to Idyllwild we got snowed in for two days and it got way way worse in California and my home town was in lock down. Decided to get off trail when things seemed so far off that it was not only immoral but illogical to continue. Big Bear didnt want hikers, Wrightwood didnt want hikers, and who knew about the towns farther ahead. I quit for selfish reasons just as much as selfless to be honest, and cumulatively it just made sense to postpone. Not even sure about next year, seems like it will be the busiest year ever after all the drop outs from 2020. I had to same experience flying from Palm Springs>>Phoenix>>Kansas City, really an insane experience going from San Jacinto to a deserted Palm Springs.
As an ER nurse... thank you for being an adult about this... There are people that don’t understand the seriousness of this situation. It’s gonna get bad. Hopefully it won’t last insanely long.... stay safe!
If you would like to help Hikers get off the trail, Please check the Trail FB Pages (AT, PCT, CDT, AZT, Etc..) for hikers asking for help or Contact Odie with the Hiker Yearbook to see where you can help on the AT 👉 facebook.com/mattnorman111

I have respect for anyone gets off but I also not upset for one's are still out there bc therr being careful wearing mask a gloves
“Be hiker trash not trashy hikers” That says it all! Support your hiking community not tear it apart! Enough with the negativity please. Lets start helping each other and supporting each other in the common bond that brought us all together - hiking!
Could not have been said better.
If we don't self regulate... Someone else will do it for us.
(Government?)
Thanks RVA Hiker Girl! You are amazing 👍👊
Seeing you get off made my decision to do the same much easier. You are a great example. Best wishes!
I was following your excellent AT adventure and you deserve thanks for the gracious way you handled leaving the trail as well. Thank you.
Was following. You will crush it another year. Glad you got off. Was concerned.
Totally enjoyed meeting Frozen's 2020 class - I'll look forward to you returning in 2021 - good luck the rest of the summer and until next year, stay safe!!!
Mad props girl so proud of you
Taylor the Nahamsha Hiker you did the right thing. You might have saved a life. 😇👼
As a physician hiker I want to thank you for this video. You are spot on. The best trail magic is caring, giving but also, knowlegable of what the trail is all about. Thanks.
The trail is taking it's own zero. Maybe it will help the trail rest up, and come back healthier.
YES! I agree!
michael allensworth
It is own zero?
Or
It has own zero?

As an ICU nurse on the front line caring for Covid 19 patients I want to say a sincere thank you for this video. Your best one yet.
Thank you for your service....Please stay well and take care of yourself.
Thank you. I will do my best.
Thank you for everything you are doing.
Thanks titan
If that doesn't get through to people, not sure anything else will.
Thanks for the Support Brother! Hope you're doing well & safe 🤙
Tell Florida that. They just re-opened a university there and the governor will not shut down anything.
This virus is bad its bad for everybody
Daniel Dulu you can't fix stupid.
@Amy Sternheim ie.. sacrificing his flock? The stupidity going on is terrifying in itself.
Dear Wild - I can only imagine what a hard decision this was - I enjoyed watching the start of your hike - as you say, the dream continues
WILD ON THE TRAIL I followed you ever day and k ow this was a life goal. I hope you finish when it’s safe
Love You Guys Too! ❤️
Had such a great time at your place!! Will be by again and would love to stay again. Hope you guys are safe!! Snuggles from Maine!
Oh and I'm not sure why there were 60 thumbs down, the message is an extremely positive one!
Thank you Darwin - went off the trail yesterday - fly back to Switzerland to take care of my family - your videos are always full of respect for everyone.
I appreciate that you emphasize respect for the trail and the communities that hikers are going through. Voice of reason. Thanks so much.
Glad you were there for me when I got off trail my brother. Love ya buddy!
Darwin onthetrail anytime brother! I was happy to do so. 👍🏼👍🏼
@Vegans Suck Did you even watch the video, or are you just here to be a piece of shit? All of your comments are garbage.
@@OrangeCrusader so people should be on the trail? Not sure what you're saying
@@scottyplug are you not saying to get off the trail? I don't understand why your pissed for my agreement with the video?
As a 40 year critical care nurse, all I can say is we ain't seen nothing yet. If you do nothing at all except "social distancing" do it 100%. Break the chain of infection. Everyone that interacts with anyone you interact with is part of a chain that includes you. All infections work this way. Thanks Darwin, excellent choice, excellent advice.
Darwin Sir, you have my profound respect. Thank you for your heartfelt appeal to reason. If people heed these warnings we will save a lot of lives.
Thank you Darwin! As someone prepping for a 2022 thru-hike, I appreciate your love and care for the trail and towns. I'm also glad you are using your platform to encourage others to do the same. Much love!
Postponing my PCT hike this year. Hope people stay smart and safe about this all. Thanks.
Bummer Brother! The trail will wait for all of us. 🤙
BTW, Really dig your stuff!
You made the right call - glad you are safe and with Snuggles. Let’s hope this passes soon so you can get back on the trail this summer.
THANK YOU for being a grownup, unlike some others out there...
🤙
Thank you for sharing this. I spent my life rescuing people and no one is exempt from needing help their whole life. I am praying that everyone comes through this. The trails will still be there when this is over.
Exactly. I live in a tiny AT town in Massachusetts and everything is closed. Please don't come into our town and put us at risk.
Whenever foreigners come to your small town or you leave then return to your small town, you're at risk of a viral outbreak. Mass hysteria from mainstream is the only reason you're all of a sudden paranoid.
Don't come into our city when you get sick expecting medical care. Funny, reciprocity is a bitch...
@@homelessmillionaire1 Trumpanzee or Evil-gelickal?
Jhon Adam both is an option
Thank you
THANKS FOR YOUR RATIONAL, GROWN-UP & INSPIRATIONAL COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP.
A couple things folks may need to hear that seems to be getting lost in the headlines in our current media environment:
In my area all the new cases are in people 20 to 60 years old. The one death was in the 20 year old. So be smart everyone.
This is what human connection means... Supporting our communities to keep each other safe. I am sending positive energy to you and your family. ❤️
You're such a solid guy. I knew this before, but this just demonstrates that. I am glad you made it back safe and hope that you remain healthy.
I have a ton of respect for you for your choice and for making this video. You approach subjects in a very clear, respectful, and logical way. Thank you for all you do. The trail will still be there after all is done. As a small creater I will NEVER shame another hiker. Great message.
Thanks for taking it so seriously - We must stand together, individually

Hi there. Greetings from the US
@@sirrafael1 thank you👍
Thank you for this. I can't understate how much of your message applies to how we all need to deal with this situation. Your message is spot on.
Glad you made it home and still safe. And thanks for showing RESPECT for all.
Thank you
Solid role model 👌 I hope to see you back on the trail again soon as this all blows over!
See you out there soon enough! 🤙
Well said my Friend. I agree with you 💯% . BE RESPONSIBLE!!!
Thanks for your Support Brother!
That just means 2 people are wrong.
Well Said. Thanks for the Support!
Your leadership in the hiking community is appreciated. Thanks Darwin.
Thank you for being a leader! Awesome video.
Your concern for others and the communities you visit just gained my subscription. Well said!
This video: Heartfelt, Sincere, Understanding, Encouraging, Insightful, Needed, Awesome. Thanks so much Darwin.
Thank you, Darwin for your leadership.
I can understand how you feel, I was on an 80 day expedition with my college and was taken out last week. If you have any time a video on gear repair and or maintenance would be awesome. Happy trails
Thanks for setting the example in getting off trail and encouraging others to do the same in a kind, thoughtful and gracious way.
Respect!
Thank you for your calm message to the community. You are a role model for many and I hope everyone will listen
Hey Darwin in was nice to meet you on the trail. Your even more my Hero now then before.
Thank you for being a voice of reason. Hope you and your family are well. Can't wait to see your videos when you're back on the trails.
Thanks for the great words! We are all in this together as Americans.
Thank you for talking about this in a calm way.
No sense in being Self Righteous right now. We all need each other.
Thank you so much that you are not only taking responsibility for you and your actions, but that you use your influence to send a very clear message - get off trail!
I do respect and appreciate you now even more, for your boldness and beeing serious
Thank you, thank you, thank you! Enormous respect.
Well said. Stay safe. Good Luck!
Thank you for putting this out there Darwin. I’m just so sorry it took me so long to come to my senses. 😔
Good to see you are home safe with snuggles.. take care
Totally agree as a UA-cam creator we do need to keep inspiring each other and lifting each other up! It'll pass through soon!

Thank you for spreading positivity in this difficult situation. The hiking community owes you so much. Thank you for encouraging others in a kind way to make respectful decisions. As the partner of a healthcare worker, I am truly grateful. ❤️
Good call Darwin, health first. For everyone.
It's all about the community 🤙
Good Choice my man! Thanks for Respecting the Trail Community & taking care of yourself. The Trail will wait for you 😉
As an ER nurse... thank you for being an adult about this... There are people that don’t understand the seriousness of this situation. It’s gonna get bad. Hopefully it won’t last insanely long.... stay safe!
