Excellent video! Clear and accurate instructions - Yakima should post a link to this, especially now that they're no longer promoting the "Q" system. Thank you!
Wow, just wow. The one piece of information I needed he just glossed over without explanation. He says loosen the towers according to the yakima instructions. I was hoping to learn this so I would know how to remove the towers from the pole. He goes over everything in detail except that crucial information. First rule of installation tutorials---- do not say according to manufacturer instructions. In most cases people looking at video tutorials do not have the factory instructions. Sheeesh!
To loosen the tower from the crossbar you may need to loosen the floppy Q-clip assembly with the slotted thumb screw to allow you to open the plastic tower cover. You don't have to remove it completely. Grasp the plastic tower cover that hides the crossbar screw, and open it up. It will hinge forward, opening from the top by the crossbar, allowing you access to the crossbar screw so you can loosen it with a hex wrench, then tighten it back when your measurement is done. 1:15 shows him tightening it, then snapping the cover closed.
I have an older model set of Q-towers, it seems like the clips can not be removed. I am looking for some instructions on how to install, can anybody help me out?
I have a 2001 Ford Focus ZX3.. and on the Yakima interactive fit guide, they said that I needed Q103, not Q102 clips. Which is right? And do the clips come with pads? And is it absolutely necessary to have the Stretch Kit? I want to carry mainly 1 kayak, but possibly 2 sometimes. My kayak is 10 feet long and weighs 40 pounds.
Can this rack system be stolen with the doors closed? I don't see any point in paying $60 for the locks if you have to open the doors to remove them...
this video was pretty useless. we are watching the video for full instructions. why would you skip the whole section on take measurements and how to loosen the towers.

pop open the plastic cover and use the allen wrench supplied with the rack to loosen the screw.

Great demo!
All measurements can be found on Yakima.com. They are specific to your vehicle and that's why he can't go over them in the video!
I lost 2 a pads from my q towers, can they work without it? Or I can made a homemade improvised ones with foam? Thank you.

Each car would use either A,B,C, etc. style based on what Q clips it uses. there are PDFs available to show you which one to order.
are the q towers universal?
Could you guys do some videos with the Whisper Bar?
@R1Rider2009 I've heard people can pry them off with a crowbar
@sanoe2lake i had the same issue with mine how did u fix it?

Yes, the doors don't touch the clips at all and do nothing to prevent theft.
How are the pads vehicle specific?
McKenzie Wells yes they come with the clips
As you know these racks are pretty expensive, so yeah, a thief might take it if it's not locked down. I wouldn't chance it.
seems like the hook racks would be easy to steal ,,, geez i better get a key, too bad they dont come with the racks!!!!! they should
