The Billboard #1 hit that never was. How this song didn't become a global success and launch them toward superstar status, I'll never understand. I know they're satisfied with the level of success they've attained anyway, but I always felt the world would be a brighter place if more people knew about them.
They were never in it for mass appeal. My sister personal response letters from their fanclub in the 80s, I believe one of their moms responded to fan mail ❤️
The early and mid 90s were like that. You still had the old school punk and hardcore styles going on, but you also had this explosion of bands that would end up defining the "pop punk" sound. Ska Punk had been around for a while, but it blew up with bands like The Voodoo Glow Skulls and Citizen Fish. New anarcho-punk bands were springing up all over the place: Corrupted Ideals, Total Chaos, Dogma Mundista, and many more. The sheer variety when going to shows was amazing. Old, O.G. bands like the Circle Jerks and The Subhumans played shows, and up-and-coming bands like The Offspring ane NOFX were opening for them and packing kids in to tiny venues like Spanky's and The Barn in SoCal. Those were my formative years and I miss those days with all of my heart.
Rob Otic The hardcore turning to pop punk made some really strange sounding albums which still hold up great. Big Drill Car, Lemonheads, Samiam, Seaweed, etc
I think "popcore" was kinda the name for it, when bands had the guts to stop playing fast hardcore and play more powerpop-type stuff. The Nils and Husker Du kinda helped start that. Dag Nasty's Field Day was a big one. Other bands include Chemical People and later Pegboy.
My fave All singer. So weird I introduced him to his now wife Melissa at a All show in Seattle,WA. I wish they'd move back here from Texas, but Melissa just sent me a shit load of descendents shirts,so I guess I shouldn't bitch. Anyways,Dave & Scott are All's best singers!
My ex just passed away. We both grew up as punks, became friends, and then lost contact until our late 30s when we hooked up and tried to have a life together. We split up, fell out of touch, and then she died. I am still having a really hard time figuring out how I feel about that. Christina, if you can somehow I read this, the world is worse because of your passing. We parted ways, and I had a lot of anger towards you, but you deserved a better life than what you got. Maybe we will meet up on the other side.
my first real girlfriend was toward the end of college, she listened to my radioshow. you dont know what love is until you have a few or lack of that "one". other girls hurt me before, but i realized love is a funny thing, dont know its real until it tears you into pieces. we were on and off but had a pact to spend life together. then she died and, well, i can tell you i just turned 50, got married and divorced and that was my shot. some people never experience it. they think they do, but its not. my divorce hurt, but that was my best friend. she walked out because she has never been in love. and probably never will be. that was the end of my life, too...just wandering through until that bus takes me out.
Not exactly the same but I feel you, my boyfriend of forever took his own life when we were going through a breakup...in my mind it was not a forever breakup but i wasnt making it easy on him this time...i live every day with the guilt and regret and loss of him in the world, i feel for your hurt, i dont know if it ever gets easier, but good luck to you, the pain of loosing love is massive.
You put it perfectly. That's why the first couple of ALL releases are the best. Boring generic production is a given for virtually all "pop punk" but this weird gated 80s sound just works for some reason. Doesn't sound dated at all because the songs are too good. I don't know why Bill hates it so much.
cardigansarecool It's either A: He's still kinda butt hurt that Pummel didn't propel them into stardom or B: Admittedly, this does kinda sound like some generic 80s rock. But as I said, the sleaze works here for whatever reason.
That is exactly why I love this song in the first time that I heard it. That 80 sound with that drum Is awesome, It can be the soundtrack for some 80 movie
Discovered All, Hüsker Dü and punk rock in general from watching Snowboarders in Exile in 1990. I was 12 years old and that was it for me, that’s the sound I had been looking for. 31 years later, I’m still just as much into punk rock as ever. Lifer for sure. Cheers to all you lifers out there.
This song will always make my hair stand up. Saw them perform it it live with Scott Reynolds for the first time at Fun, Fun, Fun fest in Austin 4 years ago, still great, never gets old. I know he didn't write it but I have seen them 7 times and he still is the best front man for the band that I have seen.
I met him in Austin about 6 years ago. He did a solo acoustic set as an opener for the Descendents. We struck up a convo later that night while waiting in line for a beer. We still talk occasionally on messenger. He is an absolutely stand up guy, and his vocals have only gotten better over time.
Listened to this always on my Walkman in the streets of London in 1990 when moved in from Milan. I was 23 y.o. and what year was that! This song will never get old, it's fresh pop-punk still today.
Mark Hardin. If you lost you're one true love, yer not alone...though I dont consider her my "ex". And I still havent recovered 20 years later. Just a short list living in her shadow
Dated a guy for 3 months, meant the world to me. 6 months later and he’s still on my mind. this song as well as long distance will always have a special place in my heart :,)
Anyone who used to listen to this song at that time during teen years can tell me if it was ever possible to love that way again? Please tell me so... :(
+Rebecca Berttoty This album was on cassette in my car in my pullout stereo...and I hate to say that no, I do not feel that you can replicate that feeling. It's only possible through immaturity and innocence. These are things we do not possess anymore. Memories and nostalgia are still viable though...
*lyrics* She's my ex I can't cross her from my memory She meant everything to me She meant every word she said When she said, "I'll never ever love again Be my ex until the end" 'cause I know I'll never feel this way again She's just my ex She's my ex She marks the spot where I'm the weakest one I can't expect she'll change her ways Can't accept the things she's done She's just my ex Nothing more, nothing less She's just my ex She's my ex Nothing more, nothing less But she'll always be my ex She's my ex Don't cross her path, she still belongs to me She'll be my ex 'til I say when 'Til I get her back again 'Cause I know I'll never love again Never need another friend And I know I'll never feel this way again She's just my ex Nothing more, nothing less But she'll always be my ex She's my ex She'll cross my mind a thousand times today Still have a million things to say Guess I'm better off this way 'Cause I know she'll never love again Be my ex until the end And I know I'll never feel this way again She's just my ex Nothing more, nothing less But she's still my ex And I, and I Could never kiss that face goodbye 'Cause I, 'cause I Never stop to wonder why She looks so pretty, she looks so pretty And I know I'll never feel this way again She's just my ex Just my ex She'll always be my ex She's my- She's my ex!
I think there’s a preference for the Descendants because we hear Milo sing Bill’s songs with Milo adding the expected face to the message. When you hear anyone else sing Bill’s songs it seems like Milo should’ve sung them and it doesn’t feel right.
How have never listened to this band? Seen their albums in the punk section at the record store a thousand times, but never payed any mind. Bad call by me I'd have to say.
Its like Pep Talk to me. ALL never love again. She's just my ex. I don't care. She Still doesn't change there ways. I don't want them back again. Always less than me and never again.

I agree 100% my friend
I couldn't have said better !

They only was because Milo went to college. But this tune was a huge floor Filler at our Disco and all the parties we had.
I loved this song as a kid. What ever happened to this band?
This is such a strange, beautiful, almost forgotten era of punk rock.

@@RobOtic I like this comment a lot. I'm forty and fondly in remembrance.
amen
this is the definition of classic gem that somehow never got noticed.
WORD!!!!
ALL in a nutshell.
One of the greatest songs ever written! Bill Stevenson is a genius of power pop/pop punk.
Anon Nymous right on
amen to that David.
These guys are great, Descendents are my favorite band, but ALL still kills it
Shreddzz the descendents ARE ALL only wihout the vocalist because he wanted to be a scientist
I mean, its just the descendents with a different singer. Makes sense that the musicianship would be on the same level

Love.....a violent claw inside the body .....and a ghost of toxic mist in your brain.....that aside Love is wonderful.
There's this nice 80s sleaze in the drums and guitars here that I just love and well, they add on quite well.

The Orupturetan I get what you mean. It works here like it did for the Replacements album Tim. This song sounds ad if it could have been on Tim, IMHO.

Rebecca Berttoty ya
Taking me back to some good times
It’s wild listening to a song that at 14 means the same at 30. Different girl, same feelings.
*lyrics*
She's my ex
I can't cross her from my memory
She meant everything to me
She meant every word she said
When she said, "I'll never ever love again
Be my ex until the end" 'cause I know
I'll never feel this way again
She's just my ex
She's my ex
She marks the spot where I'm the weakest one
I can't expect she'll change her ways
Can't accept the things she's done
She's just my ex
Nothing more, nothing less
She's just my ex
She's my ex
Nothing more, nothing less
But she'll always be my ex
She's my ex
Don't cross her path, she still belongs to me
She'll be my ex 'til I say when
'Til I get her back again
'Cause I know I'll never love again
Never need another friend
And I know I'll never feel this way again
She's just my ex
Nothing more, nothing less
But she'll always be my ex
She's my ex
She'll cross my mind a thousand times today
Still have a million things to say
Guess I'm better off this way
'Cause I know she'll never love again
Be my ex until the end
And I know I'll never feel this way again
She's just my ex
Nothing more, nothing less
But she's still my ex
And I, and I
Could never kiss that face goodbye
'Cause I, 'cause I
Never stop to wonder why
She looks so pretty, she looks so pretty
And I know
I'll never feel this way again
She's just my ex
Just my ex
She'll always be my ex
She's my-
She's my ex!
Siri told me this was the best song of all time.
Guitar intro is to die for. Bass lines are grat too!
You can tell he used the good ol fingers on the bass. A pick would kinda ruin the song imo but i wouldn't be upset about it lol.
This song is so.. frinkin good , would like to hear Milo sing it ,that would be even sicker .
Such a good song. Kinda like a cure song
Hearing for first time and I love it.

Makes me think of the Mex-Econo in Nags Head.
I always thought Hold Me Up era GooGoo Dolls would have done a great version of this song.

The only true ex-girlfriend song ever written in my opinion..
