I lived and taught English ( my husband was a photographer) in the late 70’s there. First child was born there as well in the local hospital. ! Oh the memories!! I still miss the pastéis de bacalhau , grilled sardines and especially the warmed pastéis de nata tarts. If you ever are brave enough to try making the football like cod tarts make sure you soak the dried cod really well to soften and get rid of the abundant salt. Ours turned out inedible as the salt mostly remained!!!😅 After two years we moved down to Sintra and then Carcavelos, but Covilha still visits me in dreams. Hope to return in the next couple years.
Hello Friends from Oklahoma! Months ago I picked out Covilhã as a place to retire in PT- due to the beautiful mountains ( I have mountains all around where I live now), Mediterranean weather, and University. I'm so happy now knowing that I could possibly meet American friends there. Can I ask- what are you doing there? Did you come for a job? You moved your whole family there? What will all members of the family do there? Enough for now. Hope you're all well & I look forward to catching up with you on the next video. PS. Oh, please have a live session on YT. That would be so much fun.
Hello! Yes, Covilhã is an amazing place to be and we absolutely love it...our calves and glutes are learning to love it too. So hilly. Thankfully there are lots of elevators and funiculars for the truly unclimbable climbs :). We didn't come for a job, we came to be in Portugal in a place we love. I (Kim) am working remotely and the kids--who are full grown have their own things going, but like still living "at home." One a student, one a disabled dependant who we love having at home. Let us know when you land in Covilhã, there's only one other US family we know of so far, but that's part of its charm :). It's a truly international city because of the Uni here, which you might've already surmised. No complaints whatsoever so far. And ... embarrassed to say that I never even thought of a live session before... will look into how to do that :). 💚❤️💛
Thanks for reccomendations. We came into Covilha via the main road one day and didn't hang around the flats/apartments being off putting. I kind of knew I'd made a mistake. Thanks for the reply we will return and look around. Good luck with your move.
Bem-vindos, I just want to welcome you to Portugal. I saw some of your videos here and i realy liked them. You chose a very good place to live. I went there This summer and realy liked. In winter is realy cold and snowy. Good Luck and hopely everything will be as good as you hope for or better.
I'm sure you will pick Portuguese up very quickly. I learned Portuguese years ago, although I learned the Brazilian variety rather than the European Portuguese. I was able to converse and understand within about 3 months, due to the fact that, where I was, nobody spoke English, so I literally had to speak Portuguese all day, every day. The single best thing you can do is just to speak with Portuguese people as much as possible, if you're watching TV or movies, try to watch in Portuguese and resist the temptation to put English subtitles, and read newspapers and books in Portuguese too. I even speak with our little Yorkshire terrier in Portuguese. It's one of the most beautiful languages on the planet.
We liked the travelog format bit more interesting than what we did on our plot today. What's the name of the restaurant in the video please. Hope your settling in well best wishes
Thank you, yes, we really enjoy it here. We usually get coffee and nata at The World Needs Nata or one of the park cafes. But there are many good restaurants in Covilhã, lots to explore :) The Michelin Star restaurant in town is called Taberna A Laranjinha. Our personal favorites are also Alkimya and Paço 100 pressa. So good!
Congratulations! Parabens! 🎉 You’ve reached a major milestone just getting to PT. Hope to follow soon in your footsteps. I have a ton a questions-mostly since I know virtually nothing about Covilha so I’ll limit my Q’s to a few. 1. Looks like you rented a car for your first few days. Correct? 2. Is Covilha a walkable town? 3. Do you feel you’ll need a car for those logical errands or is it possible to walk everywhere? All the best. 👋🏻
Hello and thank you for the well-wishes. To answer your questions: 1. Yes, rented a car because of a train strike (which we support because of workers’ rights). And we hope to buy a small “beater” car soon so we can do quick errands and short road trips.
2. Covilhã is very walkable depending on your (shopping) needs. All the essentials are in walking distance in the Old Town and Downtown. The level of walking should not be underestimated as it is a very mountainous town. There are a lot of elevators, funiculars and escalators to help navigate the terrain. We will eventually buy a car to be able to visit surrounding towns.
Thanks! She doesn’t own any other properties, and sorry to say I don’t know of anyone. It is difficult to find rentals in Covilhã. It would be worth a visit to meet people and ask around and make sure you like it (we love it!). We found a place by asking around, rather than through the many realtors we also called.
BEFORE YOU DECIDE WERE YOU GONE LIVE IN PORTUGAL 🇵🇹 CONSIDERE TO VISIT MADEIRA ILAND, ITS AN ILANDO OF PORTUGAL CLOSE TO NORTH OF PORTUGAL. PARADISE ILAND, GARDEN OF THE ATLANTIC, LITTLE PIECE OF HEAVEN ON HEARTH. SO THE NAMES SAYS EVERYTHING. TAKE A LOOK, THE WEATHER OS CALL ETERNAL SPRING, IT HAS BREATH TAKING VEWS, SO MUCH TO SEE AND VIEW. ALSO CALLED THE HAWAII 🌺 OF EUROPE.
Hi guys, I see that your video is already few months old. Do you still like it in Covilha? We are from Quebec (yes these strange French-speaking Canadians) and planing on (maybe) moving to either Covilha or Castelo Branco. Any thoughts on the subject? Cheers!
We have sooooooooooo Much expats here that contribute to The salary degradation of our country due to The higher salaries that you have. Of course you are welcome here, but The more american people, canadian people we welcome, as well as english ones, The more we portuguese live in poverty. Everyone wants to come to Portugal and there will be a time where Portugal Will be TOO expensive even for strangers to live here. Why not trying France or some North country in Europe? Sight.

Yes, the “downtown” area near the mall is definitely not the whole story. Be sure to come up the hill to old town next time, it’s lovely!
Bem-vindo à sua nova casa. Feliz Páscoa para si e para a sua família.
Obrigada!
I’d love to hear more about how you got your dog into Portugal! We have 2 dogs and 2 cats who we want to move there with. One dog is blind…
Hi, we are moving to Covilhã at the beginning the next year. Thanks for your videos, maybe we get to know in the 3D word.
Enjoy Portugal and the rest of Europe :) . Welcome to this rectangle by the sea.
Thanks so much! 🤗

Btw, nice use of parabens!! (Keep forgetting that expression, still!)
Beira Univ offers language classes.. in luck.. close by.
Yes, we feel very lucky and will take those classes as soon as possible! 👍
Awesome video🙏 I'm looking at Covilhã. Do you recommend your landlord or anyone for a lease agreement? I'm coming on D7 visa from Canada
