They are influenced by Black Sabbath and King Crimson, but Wajima's slide playing technique of the guitar comes from the technique of shamisen, you know the instrument by songs of Wagakki Band. Ningen Isu is the band of Aomori prefecture, known as one of the center of shamisen playing in Japan.

There used to be 2 videos on UA-cam, unfortunately there down now and the only way to see them is a a few reactor channels. But it's a video Shinji the guitarist and Kanami on a kids show. They were had speakers under a price of plexyglass and little paper figures. They were having a battle to try and knock over the figures by playing. Even though it was supposed to be competitive you can tell they were just having fun and respected each so much. Maybe this is a cultural thing but just seems like everyone in the Japanese metal and rock scene are so good about checking their egos at the door for the most part.

  • @minamihideki7123

Recently, the reactions of NINGEN ISU have almost decreased, so I am very glad you did it. Heartless Scat is the most popular, but there are quite a few people who prefer this song. They are a really rare rock band who have loved British hard rocks and progressive rocks since their debut, and have created their own expressions by incorporating Japanese things into them. Since the 2000's, Japanese music has been exported to other Asian countries, and it seems that the music, that is conscious of Japanese elements, has been created. But before that, I think there were almost no rock bands in Japan doing such like this. I think because they were longing for western rock music, so it was the first important for them to imitate western music. Even from such period, they have been active in music for about 30 years since the 1980s. I love NINGEN ISU. Please react to them more. Thank you from Japan.

The extra instrument might be a theremin, they used it in other songs and also on stage before. Although it could also be a guitar. The guitarist makes a lot of his own pedals to get all kinds of sounds.
There is a subtitled video of him explaining his setup, if you're interested: ua-cam.com/video/CVYORMwCzMs/v-deo.html
Recommending albums is a bit tricky, they went through different phases over the years.
Lately I've been going through their discography to get a better grip on them, so hopefully I'll be able to pick out a few that give an overview of the band. Will take a few days though.

Love these AARP member musicians but this LIVE is even more wicked (ua-cam.com/video/rUvKusi05MA/v-deo.html) no need to review but for your own appreciation I am sure you will love it and the stage presence adds to the song. These guys have worked their butts off for decades to get to this point and they are still together, my friends marriages should of lasted this long (LOL). I love the Lovecraft vibe as it fits the Sabbath and late 70's metal sound. They are old school and in your face and totally unapologetic for it!!! If you play the same guitar as Angus Young you have to be good but all three of these musicians are fantastic and together they produce a sound long lost to metal fans unless you still have the old LPs collecting dust as I do.

Namahage is an interesting Japanese tradition. Demons visit people's houses around New Years, making eerie noises, looking for lazy children to scare. It's an unusual subject for a rock song.

OK, since you asked for album recommendations, it's essay time 😅
First, pretty much all of their music is completely in Japanese and has Japanese names, so it might be a bit hard to navigate.
Luckily their English Wikipedia page has romaji and translations of the album and song titles: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ningen_Isu#Original_albums
If you want to find a particular album (e.g. on Spotify) and identifying the kanji is a bit hard, you can copy the Japanese names of the albums below and search for them.
If I were to simply recommend their best albums (without picking from their best of releases), I would simply pick the last few they released, because I prefer their newer music.
If you want to get a better overview of the band, I think you can sort of split their discography in 4 parts. So I'm going to pick one of each part 😄
Generally, I would say that they don't really have bad albums, so you can listen to any of them without being disappointed.
    tl;dr these are the albums:
1995: 踊る一寸法師 (Odoru Issunboushi), Dancing One-Inch Preacher
1999: 二十世紀葬送曲 (Nijusseiki Sousoukyoku), Requiem For The 20th Century
    2006: 瘋痴狂, Hoochie Koo
2013: 萬燈籠 (Mandoro), Ten Thousand Garden Lanterns
Here is why I picked those (with a very short and incomplete history of the band):
The first album is the trickiest to pick.
The band started with Shinji Wajima and Ken-ichi Suzuki who were friends since school. The band formed in 1987, when drummer Noriyoshi Kamidate joined them.
Early on, in 1989, they had a bit of luck and got on a sort of band competition TV show.
There was a label associated with that show which offered the band to record their self titled debut album/EP "人間椅子" (they call it their 0th album). Unfortunately that album is not available anywhere as far as I can tell.
That went OK and in 1990 they released their "first" album, "人間失格", under a different label which sold pretty well.
However, sales of their subsequent albums weren't great and they couldn't make a living with their music.
It was quite common for them to have to look for a new label after an album was released.
Similarly, drummers kept leaving them and there were several times where they didn't have either a drummer nor a label.
So the first 10 years after their debut were a bit chaotic and there isn't really any one album that represents that period.
    The one I chose is:
1995 踊る一寸法師 (Odoru Issunboushi), Dancing One-Inch Preacher
This was the first album recorded with their second full time drummer, Iwao Tsuchiya.
It was also the first of several albums they produced themselves.
It's a bit of a mixed bag with different types of songs.
Some of the fans don't think too highly of it, but the band seems to like it and many of the songs on this album can still be found on their latest concert setlists.
It's probably not the best introduction to the band, but I can't think of a better one for that period.
1999 二十世紀葬送曲 (Nijusseiki Sousoukyoku), Requiem For The 20th Century
This is the second of 5 albums they recorded with drummer Masuhiro Goto as a proper member of the band (he worked with them as a substitute a few times before that).
At this point things became more stable and especially the last 4 albums with Goto were more consistent sound wise.
It's hard to pick between this and "怪人二十面相" which was released a year later.
    2006 瘋痴狂, Hoochie Koo
This is the second album they recorded with their current drummer, Nobu Nakajima, who also sings.
They finally got permanently signed to a major label and there was no more changing drummers and labels after that.
While they still weren't successful enough for all of them to be full time musicians, things were going better.
After Nakajima joined and especially starting with this album, the chemistry of the band improved. They also matured as musicians and people.
Another interesting thing is that it was around this time that they adopted the look that they have now. Before that they went through several different stage outfits, some of which were quite weird.
On average I like everything they've done since this album better than the first half of their work (which is still pretty good of course).
2013 萬燈籠 (Mandoro), Ten Thousand Garden Lanterns
This album was released a few months after they played at Ozzfest Japan 2013.
Playing there was a big deal for them and a few years after that all of them were finally able to make a living with their music alone.
In a way it was another debut album for them and it also marks another slight change in their sound, they became a bit heavier.
It might actually be a good introductory album for someone who never heard of them, it has the perfect opening track.
Again, I think all of their latest albums are especially good. One that stands out is "怪談 そして死とエロス" from 2016, I was really tempted not to mention the first one and instead add this one to the list...
It turned out to be more than 2-3 recommendations, but that's how these things go 😁
