Every time Gus says if only the cave was flooded, I picture him at the cave entrance with a fire hose like, "Yeah, guys we'll be able to enter soon. Just filling nature's swimming pool."
Gus; "what on earth makes you wanna go in there?" says the guy cave diving and probably 70% of the worlds population thinks the same seeing you go diving in a cave. 😁❤️
Right? You'll see videos of Gus talking about how calm and controlled he is during his dives. He doesn't panic, and he's self-assured. While he's saying all this, video plays of some of the most claustrophobia-inducing 100+ foot depth madness my brain can healthily digest without hyperventilating myself...But even before the first step in the Lost John's cave journey: "NOPE!" ALSO: in that same video, (I want to say it's when they're reacting to MrBallen + Mike Young...can't be sure), Gus mentions that it's critical viewers don't get the wrong idea that cave diving is ultimately too dangerous and therefore shouldn't be tackled. But in THIS video, he's all about the fear-mongering haha. My initial thoughts as to why this is: Gus places more fear in gravity and his own physical ability to defy it (climbing/repelling), over drowning, maintaining neutral buoyancy, calculating correct gas mixtures, planning spare tanks, placing 100% trust in maintaining connection with guidelines, decomp stops...it's bonkers to me, but he just needs more confidence. Not much, I'd say. Cave diving is fraught with dangers.
I feel same as Gus everytime I watch one of their cave diver react vids. You can go ahead and have fun squeezing through rocks in pitch black darkness just to go look at more rocks. I'm perfectly happy to sit at home and watch the video of it.
@@kabulbolan I know you need to do decompression stops, of course, but nonetheless you can go between the rocks without being forced to use ropes and risking your life falling down!
Gus is an instant dry-caver - just add water! :) Btw I get why dry-caving seems horrible to him. In diving you don´t have the risk of slipping and breaking an ankle, or breaking a foot, or falling into a crevasse. Also you feel weightless, you can move with much less effort. In a dry cave "ascending" is hard work/ climbing. In diving it is floating - which feels safer since you don´t have the feeling of " I don´t have the strength/ energy to do that and I´m going to get stuck". And yes I know, that swimming requires some fitness, and that (technical) diving gear is heavy and you also need at least some level of fittness to do it and move around cylinders all day.
Gus' pure hate towards 'dry caves' is the funniest thing I've watched in a long time!! I love when he looks at Woody with such a sense of disapproval like 'you cheating on me with those horrible no-good dry caves??'.. His face looks so personally angry at the caves the entire time.. I had to explain to my roommate why I was laughing so hard at a caving video it was pure gold!! XD
He looks fucking disgusted whenever he is watching the cave footage, like he has found better things on the bottom of his shoes than this cave... Lmfao! It's like the cave killed his parents or something, and its now his worst enemy for life
There are caving videos and scenarios that terrify me. Like the Nutty Putty cave incident, for example, makes me very hesitant to explore caves. But this cave is actually quite open and spacious, and contrary to Gus's prediction, this video makes me want to explore that cave. It's the caves where you are squeezing your body through tight passages for hours that make me want to avoid every hole in the ground.
Gus's reaction to the team rappelling deeper into the cave is great. Woody "it's a dead end, you can't just stop" Gus "what do you mean you can't stop? You could just not do this!" 🤣
@@electrictroy2010 you are kinda wrong, you actually can fall to some degree under water, there are pools and streams under water with a different density which could lead to "falling" / sinking :D

I know exactly why Gus refuses to go into such tight spaces, and I'm right there with him - I cannot imagine getting stuck in a situation where I'm not able to stab myself in the heart if I want to.
It's like the 6th point 5 amendement or something. The right of the people to stab themselves in the heart at their convenience, shall not be infringed.
Much like John Jones that got stuck in the nutty putty cave. I can't believe John Jones lasted 27 hours before passing away RIP JOHN JONES. but I seriously would've debated suicide if I was stuck in a 10 inch wide space upside down I would've had panic attacks and I would've been telling them to give me an overdose of morphine. Matter of fact if I was a spelunker I would bring my own concoction to off myself if I ever got stuck in a place for so long and it is evident I'm not gonna get out
@@electrictroy2010 there is a whole bunch of other fears people face when diving including many invisible ones, but im sure you know about them since you watch this channel. for example being sucked by a current is for sure worse than falling because you cant see it and it can go in every direction
Woody: "What do you right now if I break my leg from this point in the cave?" Gus, without skipping a beat: "Shoot you in the head and walk out. It's the only humane thing." LMAO By far one of my favorite videos from you guys.
LOL, Gus's commentary really made this video entertaining for me. He was sweating watching the cavers go deeper and deeper. One of the best parts was when Woody asked about a broken leg, and Gus went on to say what the humane thing would be to do. I'll be grilling and drinking on the surface with Gus for sure.
I love how woody is counselling him through when he’s stuck in the cave freaking out. Even though it’s a video. He’s naturally a great trainer. Aside from that, I’m with Gus ONE HUNDRED PERCENT. No way. No. Way.
Yeah, I could barely watch the part were he was stuck. I don't think I have the emotional regulation to handle situations like that. What a gift that seems people can keep their cool and support others.
Gus is terrified of getting stuck in a "dry" cave. Apparantly he has a tank as an excuse when he's on scuba. Woody you should get him all geared up...fins and all and take him into a dry cave. lol

Gus, Stick with your resolve, I've shattered an ankle before. One of the most painful breaks in the human body. Broke it when I was a kid playing in caves near my home. Required a couple surgeries and, 20 years later, the ankle is still not right. Secondly, after what happened at the Nutty Putty Caves, all my interest with, " just going a little further," into any cave was done!!!! Great show. Love you guys
Nutty putty and the boys and coach in Thailand, both remind me of why I would never go in another cave! I live close to Mammoth cave. Went there several times in my life. It has railings and electricity. And I would never even go back there. All it takes is one earth quake, and you are stuck. Me and my claustrophobia don’t need to be anywhere near there! Lol
First, 10/10 guest on this one. David is hilarious and you three have fantastic banter. Second, I know you're a scuba diving channel and I'm absolutely here for that (even though I'm not a scuba diver!), but any time you two pick a dry cave, it absolutely is a comedy video. I adore it! I have to regularly remind myself to remember to glance up-right to catch Gus occasionally looking horrified, shaking his head, etc. Gus and Woody, you two make for a fantastic channel!
I do scuba dive (just open water) and I think a big difference between dry caving and anything underwater has to do with the feeling of being weightless. It's almost like floating. From this perspective, I totally see the difference between wet and dry caving for Gus. The difference has less to do with claustrophobia and more to do with how much work it takes to crawl on your belly or get out of a jam in a dry cave versus wiggling and frog kicking while weightless. The two ventures do share a lot of commonalities -strong social communities -a necessity in being a team player -importance of proper planning and training -benefit to calming your mind and thinking "How can I" -an appreciation for the natural world that is only seen by a small handful of people
I fell down a rabbit hole a couple weeks ago of horror UA-camrs telling stories of caving and cave diving gone wrong. It spiked my anxiety terribly and I was so freaked out at the thought of walking in any confined space even in my home for a couple days. Then UA-cam recommended me your channel, and I love it. Your expertise that is approachable and your humor has made me fascinated rather than horrified with caving. You don't sugarcoat the risks but you're practical and realists with a good natured love for the activity. Thanks for this channel!!
I’ve been watching so many “something went terrible wrong” videos lately that I initially thought you’d fallen down a literal rabbit hole. I was waiting to read how you were rescued from the hole lmao
You’re scared of small places in your home bc of some UA-cam videos? That’s actually not ok😂 but I will agree I would never even think about goin in some shit like that
The reactions from Gus are absolutely hysterical!! I am literally laughing out loud and couldn’t agree more with how unappealing the entire idea of ever doing this would be!! Although I would never want to dive or cave explore I’m somewhat comforted knowing that people like you exist. What amazing drive and courage you all possess to willingly go into these situations!!
2 years ago I found a hole in the ground, under a cliff. Since all holes lead to adventure, I decided to explore it, expecting it to end after 5-10 meters. But it kept on going and going. After crawling for ~ 100 meters and passing through a squeeze were both my back and chest were touching the tunnel, I found a big room, pristine, with a 10 m high ceiling and full of speleothems. It was pure joy! And that's the beauty of caving (besides pushing your limits).
What would you have done if the back and chest squeeze didn’t open out, just got tighter? Is it possible always to reverse or could you have got into a sticky spot if it hadn’t opened into a cavern?
@@alanhillyard1639 It's a personal judgement call based on how tight it feels and what you see in front of you. If it gets tighter and tighter with no end in sight, that's when you back out. The most important part is to remain calm. In certain squeezes you may move centimeter by centimeter (literally), which is normal. There are 3 important rules when crawling through tight spaces: 1) have at least one arm in front of you (I always have both of them in front of me) so your cross section is smaller and you can use your arms to push/pull yourself 2) never enter head first in a descending passage 3) always tell someone where you are and where are you suppose to return
I really appreciate the thoroughness and explanation of what's going on for those of us new to this sort of adventure. Sometimes when pros of a certain field talk shop, they can sometimes use terms which aren't commonplace causing confusion for the average Joe. You guys do a great job of explaining what's going on so I can keep up. Love the content, always enjoy tuning in. ~ Brian
I do too! I absolutely love this channel and it’s inspiring me to shell out the dough and go for an open water certification. Plus, their on-screen chemistry/riffing is hilarious and endearing. Love this channel. Also-David, is that invite to take first-timers dry caving a genuine offer? Because I am SO in.
Yes! You put this perfectly, I'm interested in diving but have absolutely no experience, these guys do a great job of making me feel like I understand what's actually happening in these stories. Actually paint a very, almost clear I guess, mental image for me
That's one of the biggest issues with communication. You shouldn't use slang or field specific words, terms and acronyms around others that aren't in that specific industry or hobbies.
I could see Gus' soul leaving his body all throughout this video. Absolute gold. PS: I agree. This is horrible. My claustrophobia was triggered bigtime.
Watching these videos really make me want to go dry caving and cave diving but I'm 99% sure I will never go through a restriction. No way. Watching someone go through a restriction scares me more than all the stories of all the things that go wrong in caving.
Seeing the guy stuck in the end, I had to get up and walk around. Just watching this on video gives me a sense of terror. I do love this kind of content, as it scares me more than any horror movie ever could. I'd feel safer firing arrows strait up into the air, than doing this kind of caving.
Lololol the way you two interact is hilarious. Gus's reactions and cringing is so funny, like a kid just saying nope. That face and shaking his head @12:57 looked like a kid just refusing to do something. And Woody was like the dad trying to bribe his kid with burgers and cookout as a reward at the end. I'm still lmao.
The loveliest part of this video is how Gus is acting exactly how everyone one of us non divers acts when we watch some of these videos. To be honest from watching some caving videos this kind of cave looks pretty tame and apart from the repealing not to advanced.
@@lyndiwilson2334 not really, dry caves have gravity, that guy who died in the Nutty Puddy incident would be alive today if he was cave diving, because nothing would be pulling him down, as a matter of fact he would’ve inflated his wing and float up backwards. Flooded caves are safer!

Def Team Gus on this one! Found myself cringing and hyperventilating as the guy panted and tried to make it through the hole as water gushed in front of him. But if Woody absolutely needs him there, guarding the burgers and beer is 100% Gus certified :-)
I love Gus' reactions. I´m a scuba diver and I also do a bit of caving whenever I can, but I would never in my life think of mixing those two things. Underwater caves are terrifying!
"That makes it easier, when someone else has gone ahead, so you know you can do it" at precise moment the guy is getting hopelessly stuck Gus: "Oh, yeah?" 😏
The thing about dry caving is that you can push the extremes of tightness further, and that's what they do, making it way more claustrophobic. You don't "squeeze through" stuff in underwater caves because that will risk your equipment and getting stuck for even a while can be a death sentence already.
@@iAnxxiietty Bro, chill. You escalated that so quickly. lol. He knows its a compliment. Maybe you didn't notice, but he was agreeing with the original commenter while making a point at the same time. It's all good. No bad intentions here.
I'm with Gus on this one. There's extra factors to dry caving vs underwater cave diving. For one the hight and knowing you could fall down a huge drop. You can't fall in the water. Also the climbing, descending, ascending and "parkour" you have to do vs just having to swim is also another scary risky factor 😬
More people die in underwater caves than dry caves. You ain’t dying under ground in dry caves unless you knowingly make a mistake. Underwater too much can go wrong without your own factors involved. Too many mechanical issues could arise.
Agreed Gus, I'd hate that, no chance!! On the plus side, after living in the UK for 28 years I never felt or heard of an earthquake happening there, if there was an event, it's extremely rare!
This whole video Gus is thinking of his plan for the “Cave diver reacts to cave diver partner dies in dry cave” video of woody and this other guy’s next adventure
Honestly, I'm with Gus, I want to get more into diving and eventually get cave trained, but I like the idea of being able to swing back up, and not have to get stuck because of gravity or broken repelling equipment.
This takes a special kind of loco, when I was a kid I saw a clip of someone getting stuck in a cave, I've had nightmares that looked EXACTLY like this since then.
Gus is killing me tonight! First, I watched you guys watching the Unspeakable Horrors of the Deep Sea and now this one! ❤ omg, so funny and at the same time, I feel Gus' terror - NO WAY would I want to do this. I'm feeling anxiety watching this and yet can't stop watching, either. *shuddering* no freaking way. Gus" why not? at some point you have to reach the center of the earth." 😂 I don't know which is more terror inducing to me, these tight land caves or the deep scuba tight caves... both equally create nightmares. Can't stop watching, though!
I hope Gus now realizes that people who watch him and Woody feel the exact same way about cave diving, the way he feels about this "active/dry caving"!! I don't see how the risk to reward is enticing enough to scuba dive into a cave... Are there diamonds at the end? gold? NOPE! NO real reason to actually be in there except the "fun risking your life" I guess...
It's one of those things if the risk wasn't there. It would be super neat and interesting to explore. But with the risk, it just isn't worth the experience. Especially if you have any sort of anxiety or claustrophobia as you're just not going to enjoy it, and likely make the risk even higher with rash heat of the moment decision during panic.
At 27: 00 ish when he gets stuck I felt so uncomfortable watching this. I was isolating a cabin from under it last year. And it was so tight that we couldn't turn around once we crawled under it. So sometimes I went in on my belly and I could do some work that way. And that wasn't so bad because I could still raise my head and see outside. But sometimes I had to crawl under it on my back and I got so claustrophobic I just had to get out right away. I have never experienced claustrophobia like that and I was shaking in my whole body once outside. And that was on ground level and like 3 meters to get out. I was never in any danger what so ever, but my brain totally freaked me out. I can tell you that I would NEVER do what these guys are doing. Not in a million years.
The way these guys casually poor peer pressure on Gus as if he's almost not even there he's absolutely hilarious. Gus' protests to their peer pressure is even more funny lol
I loved it, I’m small enough to fit through all of it however, I’m a little claustrophobic. I’ve went crawling through a cave on my knees and climbing over cave walls but to be on my belly crawling I don’t think I could do it. But awesome video!!! Love your energy!

Caver here. That looks like a great and fun cave! Apart from the basic safety precaution, and planning. The one thing we usually worry and pay attention is flood flash, that can turn the situation into dangerous really really fast. I live in northern England and have visited Lost John’s on probably at least ten occasions. It’s located in the Yorkshire Dales. It is a superb cave system with multiple routes including some dry fossil routes and some active, wet routes. It’s graded at 4 on a scale of 1 to 5, 5 being the hardest, but some routes only get a 3. It’s also fun in winter especially if there is melt water cascading down the pitches. On an aside this is quite a big cave and there are much tighter systems than this, one that springs to mind is Hammer Pot in which it once took me over half an hour to cover about 100 feet of passage.

While he's saying all this, video plays of some of the most claustrophobia-inducing 100+ foot depth madness my brain can healthily digest without hyperventilating myself...But even before the first step in the Lost John's cave journey: "NOPE!"
ALSO: in that same video, (I want to say it's when they're reacting to MrBallen + Mike Young...can't be sure), Gus mentions that it's critical viewers don't get the wrong idea that cave diving is ultimately too dangerous and therefore shouldn't be tackled.

Btw I get why dry-caving seems horrible to him.
He looks fucking disgusted whenever he is watching the cave footage, like he has found better things on the bottom of his shoes than this cave... Lmfao! It's like the cave killed his parents or something, and its now his worst enemy for life

My thoughts exactly
There are caving videos and scenarios that terrify me. Like the Nutty Putty cave incident, for example, makes me very hesitant to explore caves. But this cave is actually quite open and spacious, and contrary to Gus's prediction, this video makes me want to explore that cave. It's the caves where you are squeezing your body through tight passages for hours that make me want to avoid every hole in the ground.
Gus's reaction to the team rappelling deeper into the cave is great.
Woody "it's a dead end, you can't just stop"
Gus "what do you mean you can't stop? You could just not do this!" 🤣
I had to go replay the part right after this because I was laughing so hard I missed it 🤣

Nutty putty is a nightmare
Not Nutty November
Nutty Putty story have me the creeps for longer than anything else I can think of. I'm with Gus on this one.
The two ventures do share a lot of commonalities
-strong social communities
-a necessity in being a team player
-importance of proper planning and training
-benefit to calming your mind and thinking "How can I"
-an appreciation for the natural world that is only seen by a small handful of people
I fell down a rabbit hole a couple weeks ago of horror UA-camrs telling stories of caving and cave diving gone wrong. It's as idiotic as cave diving. Humans don't belong underwater and underground.
Don’t do that stupid shit again.
There are 3 important rules when crawling through tight spaces:
1) have at least one arm in front of you (I always have both of them in front of me) so your cross section is smaller and you can use your arms to push/pull yourself
2) never enter head first in a descending passage
3) always tell someone where you are and where are you suppose to return
HE’D BE STUCK THERE like so many other cavers that went to tight spaces & couldn’t reverse

I'm with Gus on this one. There's extra factors to dry caving vs underwater cave diving. For one the hight and knowing you could fall down a huge drop. You can't fall in the water. Also the climbing, descending, ascending and "parkour" you have to do vs just having to swim is also another scary risky factor 😬
yet cave diving has more deaths percentage wise
I mean at least air is sufficient for any amount of time
More people die in underwater caves than dry caves. You ain’t dying under ground in dry caves unless you knowingly make a mistake. Underwater too much can go wrong without your own factors involved. Too many mechanical issues could arise.

I’m always so excited to hear woody introduce himself🤣 his happiness is contagious and I always find myself laughing or smiling lmao
I just watched this video a couple weeks ago. I was kind of hoping you guys would react to this but never thought it would happen! Great work keep it up 😁👍
That cave looks awesome! Leave it to gus to be so dramatic! 🤣
Also, I never knew there were so many caves so close to home! I was so excited to hear about the TAG area and the plethora of caves up there.
I love the content. I'm soaking up all the caving diving knowledge I can from you guys, and dry caving, (Thank you woody!). I've been open water diving once and love it. I know a commercial diver here in Savannah and anytime he sees me he pushes me to get my certifications and taunts me with stories of dives to springs in florida as well as some of the reefs along the east coast. Finding your channel and digging into all your videos is definitely lighting a fire inside making me really anxious to get out there! Keep up the awesome work!
Gus I love how you are reacting to this. These are the exact reactions I have to a lot of the diving videos.
In a cave you can fall & die. Underwater you cannot fall, so it’s better for people afraid of heights
.
what is worse than going through a tight, dark cave? fill it up with water so you cant breath without bulky equipment with multiple points of failure
I like how Gus is trying to take this seriously and Woody and Dave are just having a good time winding him up haha
