San Juan was my favorite port on my recent cruise. Because of my back pain I can’t walk as far as I’d like so I took a one hour trolley tour for $15 of old San Juan that was wonderful. I was amazed to learn they celebrate Christmas until January 23. Our ship was there till 10 PM so we got to see all the lights in old town which was beautiful. I am having back surgery in a couple weeks so hopefully after I recover, I can walk around San Juan to the beach next time. I’m definitely keeping this in my saved cruise video file. Thanks so much Kevin for your beautiful videos!!!
Oh, this is going to be great information. This is what I'm always trying to figure out when cruising. I love when there are ports where you don't have to book an excursion to enjoy the area. Thanks, Kevin! Safe travels
Great video! San Juan has been my favorite place since my parents took us there in 1967. I love the people, the food and especially the music! Have visited ten times. But never from a ship!
You did such a great job showing how it is to arrive to our beautiful island and how gorgeous it is. Hope you had a great time and tried our delicious food. Safe travels!
Aww, I've visited the island many times! Shopping in the old San Juan! Don't forget the rain forest! Tour the Bacardi ! Catch a ferry, ride the trolley! Visit the casinos, golfing and the best food found everywhere! Visit where my parents lived. Enjoy as much as you can!
You didn't mention El Morro. I need to visit there every trip. It is like a time machine - A massive fortress made of stone with cannons and tall walls from a different era protecting a port town. It is wonderfully preserved and they let you explore it all. Young boys love it.
It made me nostalgic to see old San Juan. I would go every Sunday for a 4 or 5 mile walk or bike ride. Thanks for the video. I have been in Florida for 5 years.
I live there 3 years. The Pina Colada was invented there, maybe 10 minute walk from the port. Go to tasters and get the daily special. 2 minutes from you there
The piña colada was not invented in old San Juan. That bar (BARRACHINA) is a fake tourist trap for gullible tourists. The drink originated at the Caribe Hilton hotel in the Condado section of the city.
Next time you get to San Juan, there is a famous and iconic arc of white sand beaches called "isla verde" - an easy cab ride or bus ride to the east. Enjoying your videos!
Great video! My husband and I will be on a cruise in August that will be stopping in Puerto Rico. We didn’t want to do an excursion so your walk off POV is perfect for what we want to do.
Mofongo is amazing! My Puerto Rican mother-in-law makes the best! We had stuffed mofongo in Old San Juan, that was an absolute treat! Enjoying your journey. Thanks for sharing!
Such a great video. When visiting on a cruise in Old San Juan that is the best beach to visit and the one I go to all the time. The name is El Escambron. Sadly after Maria the food areas were ruined and won't be fixed for a few more years but there are clean bathrooms and outdoor showers until 5pm. It is also the surf beach in that part of the island. For a cruise visitor there is WAY MORE than that to do when walking off the ship - for a first time visitor always go to the EL MORRO historical site which is run by the US National Parks and Service. Work your way back to the ship from there. Mafungo was a great choice for Puerto Rican food! Glad you like it and def something visitors should try.
I knew someone who ran the library on the QEII cruise ship and when they refitted there was a lady who suddenly had to move out as she'd been on the ship for 22 years in the same cabin!
LOL! That's my ship in your video. The Oceania Riviera. We'll be setting sail on her next month for the first time, and we're super excited, because she was just refurbished last December. Oceania is a upper-premium cruise line owned by NCL. The Riviera is currently the newest ship on Oceania for a few more months until the Oceania Vista sets sail in May. Btw, NCL also owns Regent Seven Seas, which is their ultra luxury all inclusive cruise line.
The last time I was in Old San Juan I did a food tour with Flavors of San Juan Food and Culture Tours. We made our own Mofongo at one of the stops. It was a nicely paced tour that we also learned about the architecture of the area as well. Enjoying your videos!
Water is beautiful! That dish looks unique! It looks delicious! You'll be getting off the ship now every time you're in PR to get that again! I love trying new dishes that areas are known for!
The old historical building that you mentioned is called "El Capitolio" the capital building. Right next to the capital building is "El Morro" the fort. As far as the bike lanes, that is only in the old San Juan area where the cruise ships are.
Thanks for the nice travel logue of my hometown. Had you walked a few more feet from Casa Luna on Calle de la Luna you’d have run into my building, right in front of Plaza Barandilla with the big steps. Mofongo is made with green (unripe) plantains. Hence the lesser sweet flavor. The white “government building” is no other than our state Capitol, currently under renovation. Cheers.
New video is a fun surprise for my morning coffee (just regular, not frou frou 😄). With all your navy time and travel it seems unexpected this was your first time in San Juan. I was there on my only cruise a million years ago. Looks different, much nicer. The Castillo and setting reminds me of the one in St. Augustine. Thanks for bringing us along!
Cool. Definitely following you for this year boating/cruising. I would like to be a solo cruiser too. I am very comfortable talking to people, but I enjoy my own company the best. 😁
Ha ha, the cars going backwards 😂 Loving all these videos from you. I guess it came up on my feed because I’m going on a cruise. You give great detail. Good job!!
Thank you for another great video. I guess I am going to have to make a spreadsheet, cruising bucket list. I prefer to walk, and local food is always on my list. San Juan, is beautiful. Your walking speed is likely 2xs the average. I think there is a way to adjust or fine tune your walking speed in Google maps settings... I can't wait for your next video. Thank you again for taking us along on your adventures. Safe travels.
I've never been to Puerto Rico, but I'd very much like to visit. Some day, I hope. Thanks so much for taking us on a walk. Looks so nice, clean, and it didn't look crowded! Love the colorful facades on the buildings! And of course, the beach! Like the foot bath tide pool! 😂 Food! Can't go wrong at a place called Casa Luna! I've never tried Mofongo, I'd very much like to. I have 4 plantains right now, getting ripe. Maybe I'll look for a recipe from a reliable source and make that happen. Of the pictures I've seen of Mofongo, yours looked so fancy and wonderful! If you get a chance to try Mofongo elsewhere, do so! I believe it's one of those dishes that everyone cooks differently, so taste and presentation can vary a lot. Ask if you can order a tiny portion. Onward to new sights!
Good tip, Friend Chris. :) And, Kevin, holy moly- the beauty of that shoreline. And you just walked there. Awesome! Good stuff. Thanks for the video. Keep ‘Em coming. :)
I live here in San Juan, so if you ever come back to SJ, happy to take you around to see stuff. VSJ (which you can easily walk to) is easy, but happy to show you other stuff (El Yunque? old Navy base?)
Great video Kevin great dish also I agree with the owner having it with meat, seafood is awesome!! San Juan is a nice place been there a half dozen times glad to see you eating 😀 looking for to seeing more great food
You are so living your best life! I've done one cruise around my own country (New Zealand) and across to Australia, however what I most enjoyed was when the ship emptied out during port stops and I had most of the ship to myself. Having already visited most of the stops before I wasn't missing anything. I'm definately an 'enjoy the journey' traveller too!

That building is the puertorican Capitol and next time you are in PR go to Raises thats a great restaurant and get the mofongo with churrasco flank stake amazing and also go to the condado area also don tello restaurant is in Cataño area you have to get on a little ferry right next to the cruise port get of the ship and turn left is in the same side of the ships won’t regret it

Love the update. You really have me interested in trying out a cruise but to keep your costs down how do you have internet while on board to edit videos, etc. That can add up quick and also the gratuities tacked on? How’s the interior cabin going, I guess since you are a former sailor your quarters are luxurious compared to your military time at sea.😂
I do use internet and it is a little pricey. But pretty soon I will be a high enough status to get 50% off on Princess. So that will be good. And yeah, the quarters are much better.
Love Plantain, really great as a mashed potato option, mixed with peas garlic, etc PR heard they are known for roasted pork in a certain specific method??...Next time pork???

I mean, don’t get me wrong, I lost two great aunts in the camps. I’m all for anyone that wants to honor them, as well as the other people that were lost. Good on the people of San Juan. But…does Puerto Rico have some big Holocaust connection that escapes me? Did they take in refugees or something? Just seems so random! Anyway, gorgeous vlog. Food looked great! And the buildings kind of reminded me of Greece.
The monument is in memory of soldiers who died in world wars...reminder Puerto Ricans are American citizens since 1917 and fought for the United states in all their wars except the Spanish American war.
Great video and don't know that we ever gave a name to the sunny rain shower...but should have had a rainbow somewhere. At least it was the battery camera recording issue. I learned a long time ago crossing Lake Geneva (Lac Leman) for a daytrip in Yvoire FR that the USB battery that will charge 3 or four phones is an absolute travel necessity. In my case it wasn't the camera, but my return ticket was on my phone. I had less than 5% battery to show them as I boarded the boat. Lesson learned and now carry the battery with me.
Have fun and pretty cruises you look like you having lots and lots of fun do what you want to do have fun live life to the fullest cuz life is too short not to so have fun cruises stay safe hope your mom is doing okay and have fun traveling💜🙏🤠🛳

The other ship is the Oceania Riviera! I have just started watching your channel and it’s great!
Awe thank you Saundra for the answer and for watching! :)
Yeah, that is definitely a good lesson learned!
You’re too critical of yourself dude, and that area around the restaurant was super cool!
Thanks brother. Yeah, super cool neighborhood!
