Abandoned Amatol Speedway

  • During the last years of World War I, a new explosive was invented to help stretch the depleting stores of TNT. It was called Amatol, and in 1918, shortly after the United States entered the war, a munitions plant and adjacent factory town were established in New Jersey named after the explosive they manufactured.
Amatol, New Jersey, was built on 6,000 acres of land in the Pine Barrens. The planned community was short lived: After World War I ended that same year, Amatol became a vacant town. The homes were deserted and the plant shut down. Because most of the buildings were built to be temporary, they were dismantled and little was left behind. The factory was eventually demolished.
The structures that were left behind were made out of concrete, and if you make the hike out into the woods and look closely you can see the remnants of the former munitions village: piles of concrete that were once houses and concrete foundations where structures once stood.
You can also see hints of the racetrack that was built in 1926 on the site of the former munitions plant. The Amatol Racetrack, also known as the Atlantic City Speedway, was the biggest raceway on the East Coast at the time. Made out of wood, it was a 1.5-mile oval track, about 50 feet wide. You can still see the oval outline of the old speedway via Google Earth, an eerie glimpse of where the raceway once existed.
On Feb. 2 2020, myself and Revenge of the Apocalypse took the journey to check out this location and few others as he spent his childhood in this area and had been back in these areas as a kid. He wanted to show me some of the cool things he got to see growing up and share his childhood memories. We stopped at 4 locations and all though the first stop was a bust due to recent No Trespassing signs posted, we respected that and took some pictures from the road and continued on to this piece of world war and racing history. Please enjoy this look of our exploration of the Amatol Speedway.

That brown bottle (1:15) looks like an old Schlitz 40 oz. from the 80's. That knife you found was pretty funny. 🤣 You could fight off a bug with it.😄

The lack of graffiti was refreshing and suprising! Sorry about the knife find let-down 😂. I know a guy that can make exactly the knife you need, lol. Never heard of this place, so thank you for the historical find! Really neat! 😊

RJ I can not imagine Cliff drunk. lol Jersey Devil. I forgot all about him. Seems you two have found the remains of of his dump site. Call CSI. Kind of creepy don't you think? You two are finding the strangest things like the bottle and shot glass on the tree.

I have not seen cliff dring an adult beverage yet so i can't imagine him drunk either. He definitely is responsible when it comes to that.
