This is an introduction to Asheville abstract artist, Jonas Gerard. Produced by Blind Lyle Films, this is the first of 2 videos for Jonas. www.BlindLyleFilms.com
My wife and I went to his gallery today and were fortunate to meet and spend time with Mr Gerard looking at his art and listening to his comments, We were blown away by the feelings inspired by his art. I had never felt anything at all before today when looking at abstract art. Looking at his overwhelms me.
dear Jonas, Im an new "graduated" Artist from the college of art in Toronto, Im trained in "clasical art", but I totaly anderstand your art and I LOVE IT!!! it realy is beautiful the way you play with colors it is magical!!!!! keep painting, u r a gift to the world! Alfredo
Jonas, Your work is great so this was a treat to see you actually painting. One day I am still hoping to get to the Smithsonian to see your historical perspecctive painting "We The People". K
I love the unique approach Jonas Gerard. Although I will never be as expressionistic as you, and although my art will never be as full as yours, I will keep going because you have motivated me. Thank you.
Jonas has my undying interest because he changes with the wind, the music, the life. A life well-lived and and loved because it surprises us. The world is being blown out, moment by moment, by Vishnu's saxiphone. He hears.
The narrative IS there in abstract, and the function is to emote feelings, good or bad as in every style of art. It's ALL there for you to discover....perhaps not in an obvious way. But it is all there..speaking. Abstract speaks to whoever is listening, to whoever wants to hear.
I'm thrilled by this way of painting and what I call the zen-approach of "wu-wei" or letting go of every benefit by just being the medium of something that comes out of Nothingness. You showed me the path, approach, ... I have to follow while painting. Thank you, Jonas.
PART 2 OF COMMENT: I have the greatest respect for the more "literal" artists. Many of these artists works simply floor me. I can appreciate their extaordinary talent and do also enjoy viewing and feeling this type of art as well. However, my home has nothing but abstract art, because, as much as I can appreciate the talent of the other artists I feel true joy having abstract art around me. Art is expression, it's feeling, it's freedom.
JONAS, YOU ARE A GIFT TO THE WORLD, THE UNIVERSE! I THOUGHT I WOULD NEVER BE ABLE TO OWN ONE OF YOUR CREATIONS BUT I JUST PURCHASED A DIGIAL PRINT AND TILE!!! MERRY CHRISTMAS TO YOU AND TO ME!
You are a angel expressing the wonders of Gods gift to us while you paint. My dearest friend long time since Asheville. My husband and I think of you often and now live in Los Angeles and want to represent your work. I need to get in touch with you wonderful vessel of the heart and hand of our father. Shalom! Your gift is needed for the world to view. Love you, Marquita and Earl Usheroff
the 1:58 picture and 3:08 and 3:51 it's upstanding...really awesome...i love that combination...it's so many expresion in it...it's make's you cry when you see that contrast...really awesome...i love your gift sir...your art are amazing...
Wow, your paintings have a lot of depth. I enjoyed watching the process. You have a good point about painting quickly. I also agree with Lindaslasberg's comment too. :)
I hope one day i will have enough money to buy one of your amazing paintings..Or i will start painting again so maybe i will be able to express myself in a similar way..When i see some of your paintings i see my soul ..Thank you!
Your outlook on abstract art is quite interesting. I also paint abstracts and I can definitely say that because no subject matter is present there is no need to critique the art - much like Minimalism. Art is a language, but the language varies as the style varies (abstract expressionism, pointillism, realism, etc), at least that's how I see art. The best abstract art exercise is to turn on some non-lyrical music, take a piece of paper and a pen/pencil in your hand and start scribbling.
Tonight's the night. It's going to happen again and again. Has to happen. Nice night. Miami is a great town. I love the Cuban food and pork sandwhiches, my favorite. But I'm hungry for something different, now.
Jonas has been painting for 60 years, and has perfected many styles. This is just what he is doing now, and it is DEFINITELY NOT about perfection. Did you listen to him speaking in this video? Have a look at his websites and look at the different styles- He did portrait painting for 30 years for example. And btw, you could have 18 different art degrees, but they mean nothing when it comes to truly understanding what art is and stands for.
PART 1 OF COMMENT...poxy, it's not necessary to "understand" art. All artists have their own perspective, abstract or otherwise. An abstract artist views things differently than someone as pragmatic as yourself. I have always loved abstract. I don't know why. I don't care why. I just know I enjoy looking at it, feeling it. I don't find the need to critque it. If I like it I like it, if I don't then I don't.
LOL, yeah, he does have a very subtle feminine/gay movement about him. My guess is that he's the "wife" in a relationship. And to IDoMyThing, no, using "flamboyant" colors(those were flamboyant colors?) doesn't indicate whether or not someone is a homosexual. His gay mannerisms do. Oh well, not a big deal if his door swings the other way.
Love the work and would be interested in your feedback on my artwork if you get a second. Just google my name or click on it below. Good luck with it all. Russell Scott-Skinner

Ive never heard an artist articulate one's expression as well as him. He is truly in touch with who he is and unafraid to release.
I didnt understand Jonas's work for a long time,,, but now i can totally see it!!!

Thank you very much! I really like your freedom to work and your vision of the color.

Has this guy come out of the closet yet? He could start wearing his feather boa out in public and not have to lie and say it's because he lost a bet.
