  • The 2000 NAPA 500 was known for a lot of things, but one of the most known storylines was that this race was the final Cup start for 3-time Cup champion Darrell Waltrip. DW led the field under the pace laps, then high fived every NASCAR crewmember and official on pit road, with the fans in the grandstands saluting DW with 'Thanks DW.' Darrell had an uneventful day, finishing 34th, 7 laps down. But, at least he finished the race in one piece.

Then Darrell Waltrip drove most of the race with tears in his eyes he said later. The tribute meant a lot to Darrell but it was time, Darrell admitted himself he enjoyed being at the track and driving but he was not competitive, and Earnhardt asked him when he was going to quit and encouraged him to do something else. That something else was broadcasting which allowed Darrell to spend more time with his family and still go to the track.

Even though the only time he came close to success in the #66 car was the outside pole at Indy, it always had one of my favorite paint schemes back then. To me it looked more plain when Todd Bodine took over; I liked this version better.

If DW had stayed with Jr, or any top tier teamz he would have had 100 wins and more championships.
