your make this so hard its easy take the span in your case 30 feet convert it to inches that is 360 inches now multiply it by the Sine of 22.5 ....360 x 0.3827= 137.772 now convert the decimal to fraction by like this 0.772 x 32 =24.704 in this case round up and you get 25/32ths of an inch so cut each rafter from long to long on 22.5 degree angles at 137 25/32ths of an inch and Presto you have perfect Gambrel roof
My requirement is a 60 degree slope on lower wall and 30 degrees on the top. This will be a metal frame to mount solar panels. The other video shows how to make that adjustment?
I was orginally interested in Gabrel Roof Trusses because they can be made onsite. HOWEVER I HAVE DISCOVERED, that you need to spend a lot of money on 14" wood I joists in order to support the floor, which defeats the purpose of saving money on DIY. The factory made Gambrel roof trusses have integrated knee walls which support the floor live load and allow a clear span of 36' or more.
I'm considering building a barn just like this but flat on the slab with no side walls. My question is, you show the rafters squared off at 10' 9 13/16" but after the angles are cut to fit will a 12' 2x6 be long enough? There is one just like this a mile or so from me that has stood the test of time and it looks like it would be inexpensive to build and it would be perfect for what I need. Wish I could send a pic of it.

I'm looking to build a 16'x12' gambrel shed and I want to run the trusses lengthwise (16') instead of the traditional way of width wise (12'). This would solve a lot of issues with the layout of the interior and the aesthetic of the outside since I would like to add a roof off one side to cover a boat. I want a garage door in the middle of one of the lengths sides of the shed and it double door on the other with just windows on the width. I found out from a different source it's possible and possibly even preferable with the layout of the doors, but I can't seem to find any plans for it. I can draw my own, but not being an engineer, I don't know how many trusses I would need or if there's anything else I need to factor in to make it structurally sound. Any help or feedback is greatly appreciated!
Can't you make the roof technically larger then the building to include a soffit and bring the knee wall closer to the outside wall and roof would sit on the knee wall by a crows foot?

I don't know if this is going to answer your question, but most of the time the circle will be drawn using a compass or in a computer aided design program.
Sure, that would work fine for drawing a circle on paper or on a computer screen. But the video says to draw a half circle with a 15' radius on a slab of concrete. I was wondering if there is a tried and true method to do that? I can think of a few ways, but I never tried it and I'm afraid my methods might not be very accurate.
@@SciPunk215Of course ‘we’ all have to start somewhere but it concerns me that you propose to construct a major structural component and yet have no idea how to lay out a circle… There’s also an engineering factor; confirming the top rafter to the gambrel legs angle so that spreading loads are equalized across the ‘floor’ joists without transferring vertical live loads to the floor joists is the critical element. I’m actually trying to refresh myself on those angles but that reference is missing from these youtube videos- including this one. While the design in this video is probably acceptable, the kneewall that is ‘engineered’ into “room trusses” aka storage trusses is significantly different than with constructed gambrels; a proper design requires no kneewall legs. This is especially important if snow load will be a factor. You don’t want the floor participating in carrying the live load. I ‘believe’ that the circle method with a ‘constant’ for calculating rake of the lower member makes a sufficiently strong 85# snow load. Other videos are crazy weak in design with scissor collapse failure highly likely.

If you look at the angles and loading for gambrels and plan to use traditional architecture… that building is going to be crazy tall. And need quite a few posts imho Talk to an engineer! 150’ 😲 Unless you meant 150 FEET long and 150 INCHES wide but that’s only ~1800 SF. ???

I think I did mention that I was referring to building gambrel trusses, and that stick framing a gambrel was different. I think I did a poor job explaining what I was trying to say.

Actually, I did understand. If you remember, I said the angles add up to 180 degrees (half circle). I just didn't go into much detail on that.

I don't know for sure what you're asking, but it is called a gambrel roof.
look a the bottom and he clealry shows the dimension is 15' radius or 30' wide altogether.

How do I know my trusses are strong enough?
Usually the truss manufacture can provide you with that information.
