    Residence card / carta d’soggiorno
    All foreign citizens who intend to apply for the issue of the Residence Card (i.e. the EC Residence Permit for long-term residents pursuant to art. 9, paragraph 1 of the Consolidated Law of 98/286)
    must pass an Italian language test certifying the A2 level of the Common Framework of Reference for Languages ​​proposed by the Council of Europe.
    Requirements for the issue of the document
    1. Regular residence in Italy for at least 5 years
    2. Possession of a valid renewable residence permit
    3. A permanent income sufficient in relation to the composition of the family unit
    4. Passing an Italian language proficiency test.
    The following are exempt from the test
    ➡️Children under 14 years of age
    ➡️Persons in possession of a certification issued by a public health facility, which attests to serious deficits in their ability to learn languages ​​due to age, pathologies or handicaps
    ➡️People in possession of a certificate of knowledge of the Italian language certifying the A2 level issued by certification bodies recognized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the MIUR
    ➡️People who have attended an Italian language course at the Provincial Centres for Adult Education and have obtained a qualification attesting to level A2
    Persons who have obtained a secondary school diploma from an Italian educational institution, or who are attending a course of study, a master's degree or a doctorate at a state or legally recognized Italian university
    ➡️Foreigners who have obtained, within the credits accrued for the integration agreement referred to in Article 4-bis of the TU, recognition of a level of knowledge of the Italian language not lower than level A2
    ➡️Foreigners who entered Italy pursuant to art. 27, paragraph 1, letter a), c), d) and q) of TU 98/286.
    The request to take the test must be submitted, electronically, to the territorially competent Prefecture. The foreign citizen will be summoned to take the test by the Prefecture within 60 days of the request. The summons will indicate the day, time and place of the exam. To pass the test, based on the comprehension of short texts and the ability of the candidates to interact, it is necessary to achieve 80% of the overall score. If the test is not passed, it will be necessary to repeat the test and make a new electronic request (without additional costs if the test is taken again within and no later than the 4-month period).
