Should be in the HOF ... He was the best QB in AFL history. He had better stats and had a higher winning % than both Namath and Dawson & it isn't even close.
Didn't like him during his playing days which you gave the reason why, the Mad Bomber my opinion was the best at heavy bombing my favorite AFL team's in submission. I would've lost money betting he wasn't in the Hall of least the AFL Fame.
I was a Chiefs fan growing up and the rivalry between those two teams was legend. Football from that era will never be replicated and it will always be my favorite period of time

I've always been a Giants fan but the Raiders were my 2nd team just because I loved to watch Lamonica throw deep to Warren and Fred. I just wish they could've won more Championships with that team. This was a great video.
WOW, same here. I came from a Giants' family, but the G-Men were the laughingstock of the league from 1973-1980, so I had to pick a 2nd favorite team and that was the Raiders. Unfortunately, I only saw Daryle in his final years. Raiders were unbelievable in that they had 3 great QBs in succession.
Based on his tutelage under Coach Sid Gillman, Al Davis loved the long downfield pass. Daryle Lamonica was the perfect QB for him. By contrast, even though Ken Stabler was equally successful, Davis never really liked him since Ken's forte were the short, accurate passes, a la the West Coast offense. But what a fantastic combination: Daryle to Warren Wells or Fred Biletnikoff -- and sometimes to Charlie Smith! Lots of TDs there!
This is “Today’s NFL” - being played in the 60’s-70’s,...before they even merged. That’s really what makes this team & Lamonica that much more amazing! BTW - whoever cut away from that “Heidi Game,”...probably cut away from Dodgers stadium & the 1988 World Series,...as Kirk Gibson hit the game winning HR off Eckersley. 😂
What nobody remembers is that if OAKLAND won the coin toss they always kicked off first. They gave the ball to opposing team for first set of downs. When OAKLAND took over on offense, the first play was, and everybody knew it was coming, post pattern to Fred Billitnakof. NOW lets get down to playing FOOTBALL
Kenny Stabler used to be his backup quarterback:: don't ❤️ 1877 superbowl champion Oakland raiders & Jim Plunkett Oakland raiders superbowl champion superbowl team
@@lloydkline1518 Actually George Blanda was his backup initially. Stabler was the holder for Blanda on placekicks only his first 3-4 years in the league.
Lamonica would have thrown for 6000 yards in today’s game. He had a cannon and I don’t have to tell you about what he could do with it with that nickname. 💣
This could just as easily be called a Warren Wells/Fred Biletnikoff highlight package. What's the name of that groovy music in the second half of the film.
I wish some team would find a way to use a vertical game in today’s NFL. With today’s D-ends it almost impossible. But I’d love to see the Raiders try.
If Carr had a Warren Wells and a Fred Biletnikoff to throw to on the outside he'd never check down. Hopefully Ruggs and Edwards can begin to follow in the footsteps of #81 and #25 in 2021.
I always wonder if Lamonica had a good relationship with Raiders HC John Madden--it seems that after the AFL-NFL merger that Madden started to become disillusioned with Lamonica's ability to run the offense and started turning to first George Blanda and ultimately Ken Stabler
From what I've read it was more Lamoncia couldn't adapt well once everyone started running more zone defenses. Vs Man to Man he could just cut loose. But, what a trio to pick from. I would be wishy washy trying to pick who to start too 😃
Madden always wanted Stabler as his QB after the merger when things were less wide open than in the AFL with complex zone defenses dominating, but Davis wanted Lamonica. Many felt Stabler should have been the starter as early as midway through 1971, but he had to wait until 3 games into the 1973 season before Madden said enough is enough.
@@jonburrows8602 believe it or not there are still people today who are angry at the Bills (and their stupid late owner Ralph Wilson) for essentially giving Lamonica to the Raiders (the players they got in exchange didn't do much)-the Bills thought that QB Jack Kemp could still be productive and hence didn't think they needed to keep Lamonica

I'll never forget watching a Raiders game. The Raiders had the ball 3rd and short yardage which would seemingly call for a run or quick pass. Nah, that's no fun. Instead Lamonica dropped back and heaved a good 30 yard attempt that fell incomplete. I mean, they didn't call him the Mad Bomber for nothing.

@johnrauch5304 What you say about Davis has a ring of truth. Props to your Dad and the GM for picking Lamonica. Awesome choice. I sure liked those Raider teams. A real pleasure to chat with Daryle's ball boy. Thanks for the info.
Today's game is so boring compared to Lamonica's blitzkrieg attack. A 25 yard pass was a checkdown for him. Today's quarterbacks have no stomach for the long ball except for a hail mary at the end of the game when they realize they have squandered the whole game away throwing 4 yard passes on 3rd and 19. Bring back the long bomb! Make it mandatory! Penalize any team that throws more 5 yard passes than 20 yard passes in a quarter. Make man coverage compulsory on 50% of all plays. Require 10 to 12 bombs of 50 yards per game per team. Make the cheerleaders wear bomber jackets. And retire the number 3 from all teams for eternity. I am done.
