- This is a pretty fiddle tune that I learned from the playing of dulcimer master Don Pedi and fiddle master Bruce Greene, who learned it from fiddler Welzie Chrisawn (1906 - 1988) of Yancey County, North Carolina.
Tuning is DGD
During Welzie's life, He worked at sawmilling, brickyards and farming. His father, John William Chrisawn (B. 1872) played the banjo in the old overhand/knocking style. Welzie was largely influenced to play the fiddle by his uncle Charles Chrisawn, who lived on clear creek of the South Toe River. The Chrisawn name was attributed by older generations to either Native American or French origin, depending on who one talked to.
Like many other old fiddlers, Welzie learned to play in his youth and played solely for his own enjoyment. In fact, many of his family members didn't even know he played the fiddle! He was a wonderful, archaic fiddler who knew several unusual yet charming tunes like the one I play here.
Bruce Greene met Welzie at the Burnsville Fair and played music with him for many years, and he visited him and his wife Alice often when he came to town.
love your joyful Dulcimer sounds, Ben.
Happy dulcimer sounds, thank-you!
I always love the mandolin, and this tune is really 'light' and refreshing. You should have your own radio show- a mix of folk history, songs, and pure skill.
I enjoy this version and your playing.
Very Nice 😊
Very pretty, and unusual. Thanks, Ben!
Nice to hear your dulcimer
Pretty tune ..!!!!
Wonderful in DGD ,too 🎶
Great to hear dulcimer
Sounds good.
You’re a good hand at dulcimer. I’ve got an old homemade one but I was never a good hand at it.
Love to hear the dulcimer again! Not an instrument I hear much of but it's becoming one of my favourites
