  • The Junior Master Gardener® program is growing good kids by igniting a passion for interactive learning and community service through gardening.
In Texas, there are JMG programs in approximately 160 counties in both urban and rural areas. We visited San Antonio in Bexar County where the program has had a real-world impact on the students, teachers and community of Lockehill Elementary School.
Interested in starting your own school garden with the JMG program 🪴? Visit us at jmgkids.us/! There you will find information, resources and trainings for teachers to help you start your garden journey!
JMG offers different curricula to help teachers engage with their students in both the traditional classroom and the outdoor classroom. Training is also offered to help teachers get started on the AgriLife Learn platform tx.ag/ALLJMG !
The Junior Master Gardener® program is an international youth gardening program of the university cooperative Extension system created and managed by Texas A&M AgriLife Extension. JMG engages children in unique, hands-on group and individual learning experiences that help grow a love of gardening, develop an appreciation for the environment and cultivate the mind.

I love this initiative! This type of teaching is so important for our children. They all learn in many different ways and going outside to care for a garden allows them to absorb the teachings at their pace. Touching, smelling, tasting, hearing is the best way to make those brain connections that will last forever. Ask a child about a topic who just had a lesson using a worksheet vs one that was out in the garden and see the difference in how they explain what they learned! They can learn both ways, but which one made that long lasting brain connection and positive experience?
