- Опубліковано 14 сер 2024
- Ed German grew up in Brooklyn and volunteered for the USMC when he was only 17. Ed served in Vietnam with Bravo Company, 1st Bn, 27th Marines, and Bravo Company, 1st Bn, 4th Marines. On May 10th, 1969, Ed was wounded along with 3 other Marines by a sniper while on patrol. When Ed returned to “The Real World” no on ever asked him about his service and time in Vietnam. Eventually, Ed started writing and publishing stories about his experience in Vietnam and in 2013 published “Deep Down in Brooklyn”, a memoir of growing up in Brooklyn, the Vietnam War, and beyond. Ed is currently the host of “The Urban Jazz Experience” on WLIW FM 88.3.

The BEST interview I've ever seen. He is a master story teller. Great story and a true hero.
I was thinking the same thing, master story teller. Tough SOBs.......
Great story thank God you made it through that hell ade are back respect and much love from my heart
@@edwardtyloch918yu😅je😅i
Just WOW!!
Amazing, so glad he made it and seems to have lived a good life.
No offence to the Seal Team, Rangers, Delta, DEVGRU Operators who get lots of screentime, but men like these that have a fraction of the training and still put their life on the line is amazing. These men are just as much heroes. I salute you, Sir.
I have a special love for Vietnam vets. These guys weren’t appreciated enough when they got home. Thank you sir for your service.
Yeah same with the Korean War. When have you ever seen a movie about the Korean war? People act like it never happened. Its very sad

Thank you Sir, for this interview and your story. Proud to call you my Marine Brother as I served from 71-75 in the Corps (E-5) and P.I. grad. I lost my High School friend 9-16-70 over there. His name was L/CPL William Franklin. You Sir, are a true American! Thank you for your sacrifice! I'm thankful you made it home!! Semper Fi!
@vallephoto Hope my Marine Bro is well and making life good for you. Go Air Wing!! Had to escort a few to the Brig there back in the day! Semper Fi!
at the 9:19 mark of the video...he says he gets fixed up with the youngest girl in the bar...then a few seconds later he says he does not know her age. Talk about ego.
😊😊aa😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊@@charlesmiddleton3247
@@danielbrown3461how do you associate this detail of the story with ego. What it sounded like to me was this girl he was with was quite impressionable on him that he cared enough about her to remember her name. Not sure many other guys would be able to do the same. Perhaps he mentioned that detail because whereas many of the other women who were older this one was closer to his age & for that he established a connection with her versus many of the other men who didn't🤔

Hey Ed, You still look like you're in good shape, not
surprised.I don't know if you remember me but I worked with you in the Vietnam Veteran's Leadership program, I believe in the 80's. After I finished working there,I tried Real Estate for two years and then enlisted in the US Army. Because of my Marine background they gave me a shot at Special Forces, Green Berets. I made it but it was a long haul. I did about 9 years 2months and then finished up, tried to get back into the fighting but my luck had run out. Now I'm retired, living in North Carolina on a disability, 80% stress and 20% unemployability. Even though I had both hips replaced from parachuting and humping that ruck I'm still able to train, doing weights, martial arts and shooting. Ok Ed I'm glad to see that you're well, I wonder what happened to Glenn? Take care and God bless. Semper Fi, Denis C. Berte'
You should try for a job at the VA. I mean, you could ride it out with part time desk job❤ thank you for your service I hope you will forge on by advocating for yourself by highlighting your sacrifice and courage as you have hear ❤
@@madfoxcityemnau6414 I really appreciate the kind words and encouragement, it truly made my day. Right now I'm 100%, 80% PTSD and 20% unemployable, which means I am not allowed to work any jobs again. When I worked in the civilian world I don't think I managed to stay at any one job more than a year, sometimes weeks and even days. What a strange world it is, isn't it sir? If I'm on the battlefield I'm alright, but if I'm in the civilian world during peacetime the boredom for me is like a slow death. Everyone is different, from different backgrounds I guess; I was born into the military so for me at a very early age the "die was cast." All I can do now is stay combat ready and help the people around me, so that I can make my life count for something, for the guys and gals who didn't make it back. So simply I will "Charlie Mike," continue the mission! And for me the only people who count are my buds to the left and right of my and good citizens such as yourself. Again thanks and God bless. Denis Berte' USMC/SF
Thank you for fighting for me, my family, and our country.
Hey brother, I served with Charlie Company1/4
I lived near the NAVAL hospital in st ALBANS Queens near LINDEN BLVD back in the 60s ! I use to take the Q4 bus 🚌 home ! Leans Horn , James Brown and other black entertainers lived in STALBANS QUEENS BACK IN THE 60S AND 70s
I tried to get a JOB at the NAVAL HOSPITAL BACK THEN !
THAT WAS A LONG TIME AGO !
IM 67 YEARS OLD LIVING IN CALI
@williamulrich4358
I was a combat engineer but I was in 75 to 77 ! Ft Campbell kt and fort lost in the woods Missouri !
I went to the CORRECTIONAL CONFINEMENT FACILITIES FOR 2 PDS OF WEED !
It didn't make sense how the government tide the American's hands and would not let them fight to win the war, but it made perfect sense to the South. Vietnamese, who were fighting for their freedom and were thankful to have the Americans by their side. South Korea is still free because our government did not pull our troops out of there. South Vietnam fell to the communists once the Americans left.
The protesters we're not protesting war. When you look back at it, the agitators were pro. Socialist and pro Communist. They were pissed that we were trying to stop the spread of communism..
This guy looks great for his 70s! Amazing storytelling, I love all the veterans, but sometimes they speak in a dull, monotone voice. This guy had energy and passion. He definitely needs to do more interviews maybe even start a podcast!
Agree on all points
@@jond181oh, sorry if talking about our experience is dull. If you two c0ck gobblers can do better, feel free to sack up and then regail us with your stories about buddies being turned into hamburger. A** Holes.
Looking good at old age is a gift be stowed to black folks from God. 💪🏾
Hope I look as good as him when I am his age

Spoken like only someone from Brooklyn, New York could do it. So very proud of your service fellow Marine. Semper Fi and God Bless you and your family.
Thank you, Mr German. Indeed each generation has fantastic people.
This Jarhead is the real deal! Clearly, he's proud of having served, but he's not going to play the super patriot.
I respect that. Jarhead myself.
He also has a brain. Double the respect.
Real Marines just go about their business and don't need to be tatted up with 9000 flags. Those guys were usually pogues or shitbirds. Mr. German is like most real Marines. Accomplished and as a matter of fact. No BS bravado. Semper Fi to all of us who need no fanfare.
Errrrrrr
Many Marines asked the same question...why are we here?
Respect recognizing everyone we lost in that war point taken
Thank you Sir for your story. My Dad served USMC 66-69. Badly wounded in 67 and passed due to Agent orange exposure in 92 at age 46. God Bless Our Marines, Veterans and Service members.
Lost my uncle in 1997 due to agent orange. He was 51.
RIP Lance Corporal Fred Logan Reeder
Great story of this man’s heroism. I could listen to him all day. He is a great orator. Thank you for your service.
You’re a hero.
Oh my Lord. incredible. Thank you so much for your service and welcome back home.
Great ability to tell it like it is. Kudos to you Sir!
What a solid, honest interview. Thanks.
Ed’s coming home and getting such a welcome from his family was the best part of the story. I surprised my Mom while she was at work and got the same reaction. Welcome home Ed.🇺🇸
Thank you sir. I love hearing real vets experiences. You are not taken for granted

Dang guy is alright. Respect. Thank you for doing your best and helping the South Vietnamese.
This mam is a Great American and l am proud to be his fellow New Yorker... from Astoria Queens!
SEMPER FI. Thank you and all Vietnam vets for your service.
Thank you for your story! As a young child born at the end of the war, 1973, I had family members who served. They were very quiet about their experiences there. I watched how my favorite Uncle Thomas struggled upon the return back, and assimilating once back and into later life. These stories I watch really help to put things into perspective about what my family similarly went through, as well as other GI’s. An important part of our history that shouldn’t be forgotten. Thank you for your service and sharing sir.
A profound tale of the American Experience , Thank You Marine !
Thank you so much for your service, never forget.
Awesome work.🇺🇸
Thank You as well. Wishing you peaceful and Happy Holidays and stay safe.
Thanks for your service!! Everyone please remember the ones that didn’t make it back home!! Thanks
Excellent story and you're a great story teller. I was in Vietnam the same time you were. I left in Sep.69 and was in the Army down in Saigon by Tan San Nhut.
Top notch Man and a great narrator. May God continue to bless him.
Thanks for your service. You’re a great soul. I could listen to you talk for hours.
THENKYOU FOR YOUR SERVICE AND THANKYOU FOR SHARING SEMPER FI
Great video. This man is a great storyteller and he shows no signs of PTSD or anger or arrogance. Some guys can get past bad memories and some can’t. Great guy and great video. Thanks for interviewing him.
I was born in 1963 and grew up during the Vietnam War. I remember watching coverage of the war by Walter Cronkite on the evening news with my Grandfather. I had 1 cousin do 1 tour there. I always had the utmost respect for our Vietnam Veterans, and still do. I believe seeing and hearing their stories as a kid influenced me to join the Army when I turned 23. I served 23 years and retired as a First Sergeant.
Thank you for your service, Mr. German. Your recollection of events is superb. Always makes me think of my father-in-law, who was a marine, serving there, in the same time period. Returned home after two purple hearts awarded. Love the patriotism...2 thumbs up, from Arkansas
I also am a Vietnam veteran and agree that the war did not make sense. I was in the Air Force at Da Nang as an air traffic controller during 67/68 and learned a tremendous amount about my job and was able to save lives.
Thank You Sir and God Bless You. We were young and kind of innocent, but we loved America. Happy and Peaceful Holidays and stay safe and well.
This is a great story. I need to read his book.
Loved this story. This dude has a good memory for details. I'm in my 50s and have already forgotten my General Orders and drill instructors names. I plan on getting this guys book
I listen to a lot of the interviews.
There is something about this Marine that makes him one of my favorites to far.
Love the stories about RNR and the vivid details.
Semper Fi my brother!
This guy is brilliant, handsome, brave and kind. He narrates his story well too. wow
Mr.German you are a Great American...Thank you for what you did..and what you became..Honest n True !!!!
What a great interview. Ed is a hero. Thank you Mr. German.
What a human being! Think of it! So expressive in telling a most difficult story. A high school drop out, a wounded combat veteran from an unpopular war yet look at the fantastic surroundings of his home. They tell a story! From a Viet Nam veteran, combat Marine.
What an American!
This is a great episode! Thanks for presenting Ed and letting him share his experience during the Vietnam war.
Thank you for being there for us, Sir. What a story. We need to listen to more exoeriw ces of our elders. Long live R and R!!!
