B B C Four Sessions - The Christmas Session

- B B C Four celebrates merry midwinter in unique style, with an exhilarating blend of folk tradition and burlesque fun. Energetic 11-piece Bellowhead and Mercury-nominated alternative folkies The Unthanks get together with the impressive young singers Thea Gilmore and Lisa Knapp, plus other special guests.
Steered by genial host Paul Sartin, the assembled artists perform seasonal songs of their own alongside yuletide favourites, ranging from folk ballads and carols to parlour songs and carousing dance numbers, with everyone coming together for a final knees-up.
Filmed at the atmospheric Shoreditch Town Hall, the setting evokes an old music hall combined with a festive Victorian family parlour, bedecked with garlands, period lamps and fireplace. Even the audience are dressed up in old-fashioned finery and prove themselves ready to kick up their heels.
RIP Paul Sartin. An extraordinary talent, sorely missed.
RIP Paul Sartin 💔
Damn. So sad, will be very much missed (OK my knowledge is just online, but he contributed to so much that I love.)
An absolute classic. Watch it every Christmas.
Paul presented this so well, such a sad loss!
Watched it again this Christmas Eve. it is a very highly underrated show. the musicians are multi-talented with amazing voices. the song choices were perfect. only wish it was on longer 2 hours would have been good
By far the best Christmas concert ever I watch it every Christmas for 12 years in a row now magnificent
I have this permanently on my Favourites and watch it every year! When, oh when, are they ever going to release it on DVD, this is the best Christmas concert ever. I've said it before, but thanks Lee Nicklen for uploading it on UA-cam!
Bless, you are welcome. Thanks for your thanks! I wish they'd do another! Have a great Christmas and New Year! x
@@johndehaura I watch this most years on BBC4 at Xmas its brilliant after a few spliffs.
Popping up from 2021 me me bro and dad love watching this with a few ales and mead we used to watch it on the old sky box ever since owning a new one it was gone but thank goodness for UA-cam
Our Christmas would not be the same not starting with watching this
Absolutely love it
Lisa Knapp at 24 mins is one of the best live performances ever - we watch it throughout the winter festival season
Was EARTH SHATTERING when I first heard it. Appallingly beautiful.

You were appalled?
She is great they all are but the best performance that all the audience are clearly in awe of is Jim Moray O Come Emmanuel truly incredible
Thanks for taking the time to comment. All those people that make this possible - amazing people.
Genuinely amazed this didn't become a yearly thing, it was a cracking event that deserves it.
Back again for another festive listen
Know Christmas is near when I dust this off Shame they don't repeat it on the television
They did, last night. That's why I'm here.

Same for me too!
Interesting and much as I love it this is a product of academia in that they are products of some degree course in Folk Music, when I was studying for my degree I just sung and played music that I learned from my dad who was one of the pioneers of the folk revival in the sixties in Coventry.
First view of the year 2016 and my annual gratitude to Lee Nicklen for posting this - the best ever Christmas gig! I so wish I had been there. Paul Sartin told me the audience was invited guests only (he also said he only wished he was privy to the royalties from people watching this year on year) but he loved that people were loving watching this concert on UA-cam. I'm sure we'll be dipping into this again before the Christmas period is over. And as an added bonus it's a damned good work-out to dance to! X
Easily the best show on telly over Christmas 2011...Thanks so much for posting it here...
And yes the Coventry Carol was beautiful, but so were the Unthank's and Thea Gilmore's offerings...not to mention the ever-effervescent Bellowhead...
I play this every year, absolutely love it
Not Christmas till it's played a few times 😊😊

It's that time of year again for our annual outing to Shoreditch via UA-cam for this fab Christmas concert. Christmas just wouldn't be the same without watching this.
I completely agree with you. It's a wonderful gathering of fine musicians and people. Amazing work by the BBC and the engineers, lighting crews, designers, the cleaners - all who make productions, concerts and shows like this work tremendously well.
No problem. It was the best show over Christmas. The Beeb will no doubt have this taken down one day. :0(
If only Lisa Knapp would release her version of Coventry Carol
Here Christmas Eve 2021.
Watch this every single year.
Absolutely love it! 🎄
Thanks so much for loading this Lee. I really hoped BBC4 would show it again this year!
Lisa Knapp bringing us back to Christmas once more
I completely agree with you. Thank you for taking the time to comment. The wonderful people with their many talents that make these concerts possible. The audience look amazing too.
I'm not quite sure, Kazzy. It definitely should be in my empirical view. Have a wonderful Christmas break and a fine New Year ahead.

Watched it twice again this Christmas. Once on here and once on the dvd that a friend downloaded to. Definitely time to do another one. Emails to BBC methinks.

Nor why I'm watching and enjoying it in October! :-)
Unbeflippinleivable!
Lost our copy of this last weekend. Would love another . Anyone know how I could get one, BBC Version not available ? 20/12/21.
Lee, do you happen to still have the original file for this? I can't find my copy anywhere and was wondering if you could send me it if you did. Many thanks.
Merry Christmas from The Tweed Pig
Best thing on tv at Xmas especially if you've smoked loads of weed.
You could try searching Google for: "youtube to mp3". The rest is straight forward enough. Good luck!
It’s on its way again
The first tree in the greenwood it IS the Holly
just download a youtube ripper and then burn it onto a blank dvd
Quite poignant to watch this year with Paul Sartin as host, what a loss to the folk community.
When can I get an audio only file of this?
In the bleak midwinter Insaw a ventriloquist dummy in the snow, he was shouting at some mice 🐁 and telling them to go wawawawawawawawaww 🤸🏼♀️💃🏻🥳🥳
