Joblot of Broken PowerA Nintendo Switch Controllers - Trying to FIX

- Hi, in this video I attempt to repair a job lot of broken PowerA Nintendo Switch controllers purchased from eBay.
They have a variety of faults.
My PO Box for faulty items for possible videos is:
PO Box 2597,
WATFORD,
WD18 1HT
United Kingdom
Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things. I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things, so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series. Many thanks, Vince.
Spoiler Saver & Riddle
A 20 foot rope ladder hangs over the side of a seaworthy boat. The bottom rung is level with the surface of the water. The rungs on the ladder are one foot (12 inches) apart, the tide rises at a rate of 6 inches per hour.
How long will it take until the 3 bottom rungs are under the water?
Riddle Answer Spoiler Saver 😁
It would take as long as it takes for the boat to become UNseaworthy. i.e. until it sinks. 😁
😂😂👍👍 Well done Steve!
The boat wont sink if its seaworthy😉😉
It would be nice if you learn to edit out these sounds in the background.
The Flying Dutchman never sinks..!!
Great video, nice fixes!
Tip tinner is really a last resort utility. Very handy if your tip gets oxidized and wont take solder but not something you want to use regularly because it is acidic and will eventually eat through your tip coating.
To prevent oxidation tin your tip with some solder before you put it to bed.
Thanks Micro 👍
Awesome repair job. I love seeing these things saved from the landfill.
Nice amount of unnecessary waste kept out of landfill. Good job.
these controllers are ewaste. they need to be trashed. they weight 1 gram that is not a joke they are insanely light they weight less than 1 joycon.
ur pfp reminds me of this old tony
Vince that's not tip cleaner it solder paste basically tiny balls of solder in flux normally used in stencil work for BGA chips. For tip cleaning use cheap plumbers flux and dip the tip of hot soldering iron in it or a wet sponge or copper scourer much cheaper.
I beg to differ. Although it may well be a mixture of solder paste and flux it is sold and used for tip cleaning. Search for "tip cleaner" to see what I mean
It will put a new layer on the tip that solder can attach to - long continuous use of tips turns them blue/oxidised-
That's corrosive tip cleaner. Most people aren't going to have the solder paste that's used in electronics manufacturing.
These almost seem like they've become routine for you. It's great to see the progression over the years. Great job mate.
You've inspired me to look at the R bumper button on my Wingman Rumblepad. I'm gonna pick up a not-totally-garbage soldering iron that's small enough for the job (my current one works but is a 140w automotive soldering gun so huge tips) and get at it!
The wireless was probably the most interesting fix, just for the jumper wire. But good to know that repairs on 3rd party lots are relatively painless.
Well done, great job again. I bought one of these cheap controllers from Argos when on discontinued line offer. I had no idea how cheaply made they were.
Madcatz who used to do 3rd party xbox 360 controllers used that same mechanism. I hated it trying to take it apart used to annoy the hell out of me . Great job vince as always.
Nice one. You fixed all the possible ones. All saved from the Pile!
It's times like this where I wish I knew what I was doing with a soldering iron. Those were relatively simple to fix, if you have the tools and the know-how.
Great vid 🙂
I have a PowerA Xbox One Controller I use for me PC, I'm very impressed with it for the money, has a good solid feel, doesn't feel like a 3rd party controller. I never knew about the programmable buttons I just assumed the Xbox one controllers had those extra buttons! I have seen a fair few broken PowerA switch controllers on eBay and have considered buying some but I honestly can't think of a use case for a wired Switch Controller!
I'm using my wifes spare PowerA BOTW pro controller on Steam. Makes my golf game much better.
@@TechGorilla1987 I have PowerA enhanced switch controller it’s rechargeable
@@faclonx6275 Me too. It's a legit Nintendo one with the BOTW skin. I love it frankly.
Items nowadays are made to work, not made to last. Good job
Interesting stuff once again, Vince. I wonder why Nintendo would officially license something that had corners cut during manufacturing?! Still, you made them better than factory, for sure. Very nice 👍
@Fix it Phil Hi Phil! You could be right, but if you look at 00:51 you can see the Switch logo and the Nintendo seal on the boxes. Although I guess they could have the logo on and still be fake. 😬 But yeah, i reckon your Chinese one will be very similar inside to these ones 👍
@Fix it Phil👍 Vince mentions Argos (a UK shop) I've just had a quick look and these controllers are indeed listed for sale on the Argos website as officially licenced!! 😬 😳

You're probably the only person sad to see a perfectly working product in a for parts lot lol
Little tip for you: Heating the solder mask while curing it speeds it up by a whole lot. I usually set my hot air station to 100°C for this
Really like these videos cause my son keeps breaking his pad and watching your videos has give me the confidence and knowledge to fix them ..... So I think my son owes you a pint the amount of money 💸 you save him 😂
brilliant and interesting video to watch you not only fix them but make them better from manufacturers missed soldering mistakes cool to see man and only vince can buy faulty for spares (didn't mention repairs) and get a fully working one in there lol :)
Lovely fixes =D Surprised that the stick mounting points aren't soldered on some of these =O Great idea fixing that whilst there!
Yes all companies try to keep everything to the bare minimum when manufacturing the product , I worked at a factory that made power tools and the grease for the gear box was measured in 1/100 of a gram , every coin saved per unit adds up when they make thousands of units daily
That potentiometer solution to make the triggers act like analogue switches is exactly the same thing you'd find inside an Xbox 360 controller for instance and also inside the original Xbox's controllers, albeit the latter one has a different structure than the controller you show in the video. The one you've opened up is really similar to the Xbox 360 one.
very good idea soldering that sticky one, i had a wii u controller break loose maybe our daughter or something no idea how that happened. there are certain things companies cheap out on that ends up costing them more in the end. although this may not be one of em. person thinks they were too rough with it, buys a new one. little piece of tin or copper could jump it as well
I love the way he says "Stremph" for "strength" :D :D
Very nice repairs great work
Thanks so much for the content, followed the video and fixed my a button was not working, thankfully it just needed cleaning.
i have the same problem with my board except mine broke. I managed to solder rz and rb. Where would you solder the 3v3 to. Much appreciated. Keep up the good work
Wow Great Video Vince your really good at fixing things
Hi Vince, you could buy a pipette to dispense the alcohol in a more controlled manner. Coupla pounds off ebay or Amazon.
Vince, you should do a repair video on your creaking floorboards.
I have 3 of those Power A controllers for the switch everyone of them suffers from stick drift brand new out of the box they are not made very well. Great video as always
Mine developed it not long after purchase, the potentiometer was grimy and I know I didn't spill, nor did my friends. Came that way out the factory.
Didn't know about those till now... thanks mate
Hey Vince, nice fix on the controllers. Are you going to keep all of them? Because I am interested in buying that Pikachu controller for my Switch. I hope you see this comment.
great video vince👍👍
Good vid. I have an issue with Switch controllers . 1 broken. Broken analog but it's a cable version where I cam not see screws to unscrew and a cordless controller where I can see screws to unscrew . Can you shed some light on the issue..
Excellent channel and some fabulous retro electronics
Hello from The States
👍👍
Get those floorboards sorted out you can hear the mrs trying to be quiet 🤫 lol
Great vid as always, what soldering iron do you use please?
Nice vid vince quick question vince I have a Samsung qled tv and it’s starting to flicker on right side sometimes is it the ribbon cable needing cleaned?
Not sure if anyone has mentioned it but the trigger set up you mentioned is the same as an xbox 360 controller, i assume that's where they got the idea for the poteomitors.
Vince, could you please post a video that you teach how to track down a voltage on the Nintendo Switch Lite?
Mine doesn't power on anymore and nor does it charge :(
I get 0A on the meter, it's pretty much dead.
Hey vince what was the music at the end? U never label ya songs lol nice vid mate keep it up. M

Hello, I've been watching your videos for a long time now and I find them excellent!
I am worried because I have a problem with a device bought recently on the net and I would have liked to know what you thought of it?
Is there a way to contact you?
Thank you in advance.
Xbox 360 controllers have potentiometers for the triggers too and now I'm curious to see how Xbox one controllers replaced that way to give us analog triggers.
hay Vince , just a quick question. what controller wire do you using in this video as I brought a PowerA controller and cant seem to find a wire that fits into its weirdly strange slot?
Slightly O/T, but I really like the fabric on Vince's couch at the start of the video.
Homey feeling right? :P
Thank you for fixing my switch man
Would it be possible to reverse the A & B buttons on any of these controllers? I don’t see individual buttons being wired - I guess these are “digital” controllers instead of analog?
I’d love to figure out how to swap the A & B button functions on these third party controllers, since Nintendo only allows re-mapping via software on their 1st party controllers.
I'd definitely wear my mate Vince merch if it said on the hoodie "IPA = 99.9% ISOPROPYL ALCOHOL"
Vince you should do it mate!
yip - im dissapointed if he doesn't say it in a video, if onli i had a pound every time he said it
@@stuartty1 😂😂😂 Vince does need merch though
@@adsjones1984 yeah defo - honest good guy, deserves the youtube money glory
Amazing work
just a thought vince, would that xbox controller connect to your pc / laptop via bluetooth? i have a cheap wifi bluetooth combo card in my pc and 1 connected to it no problem.
once again an amazing video
The Controllers of the first Xbox also use that method for the shoulder buttens
Part of the fun of these videos was trying to remember the names of the mmv massive in order. Please go back to showing them when you say them instead of the movie credits style
do you know where to get parts for the powera switch controllers?
I fix my own drift problems just tear down clean up control sticks then blow out with compressed air add very little silicone lubricant on moving or plastic sliding parts and put back together. for me tests out 100% effective.
as expected they use the old xbox 360 controller way for LT RT on that xbox one controller
He Mr Vince do yu think is it possible to install vibrating motor on the fake Nintendo switch controller cause to me it looks like they don't brings an yu know can yu pin point where to solder the vibrating motors on the board
I was wondering if you can fix my controller for my Nintendo switch it’s a power, a controller I’m a truck driver. I accidentally set my bed on the controller and broke the left thumb pad.
Vince, you feeling ok? Hands are getting shakier by episode.. making use of they espresso machine?
Interesting how for the cost of buying a new one you could save your old one and prevent waste
Hi Vince, ive got a PowerA Controller too and the problem with mine is, that the Joysticks move (in-game) in directions i dont them to go, e.x. the left stick gives an up signal, although i dont move it.
Any ideas on how to fix it?
That sounds like stick drift, there are quite a few guides on that. You might get away with just cleaning them more thoroughly but you might want to have a look at the potentiometers, I think that them getting dirty/the contact getting worn is the main cause.
But of course look up a guide don't take my word for it I was just summarising from poor memory lul
Tronicsfix did a video about this. Just search on youtube how to fix analog stick drift.
@Sketchy @Naku thx
I think there's something wrong with the manufacturing of the power A controllers. I have a grookie green power A controller, like a few days ago, white powder came from underneath where you place the batteries. I thought it was my batteries, changed them and never worked again.
Damm that was easy, my controler is buggy as heck, basically the a b x y dont work no more, and the dpad is doing the a b x y , so basicaly the normal buttons swap with the d pad
My issue with my PowerA wireless controller is weird. After charging for awhile, the controller wont turn on unless plugged in. I'll open the case, unplug the battery from the board, plug it back in, and the controller will work normally again. Is it possible to overcharge these things?
Sir do you know how to fix the issue of this type of controller not working wirelessly without the usb cord??? I use to play with it wirelessly every time. Please help me I can not figure it out and I feel I’ve done everything I can I believe.
love your videos mate but can't you please replace the blue mat my ocd can't cope hahah
This was super useful
Almost thought I found a fix for my ZL button (cracked trigger motherboard) but I have no soldering stuff :(
Very usefull, I repaired my controller in one night
Great Video
I have the mario classic wired one its awesome when I'm playing overwatch I can just see 1-1 right in my hands
Nice job
Beautiful!!! 😀😀😀💖💖
I wouldn't call these Controllers 'fake' - like Hori they're officially licensed by Nintendo and Microsoft but as you can see they've cut corners to cost less like wired only or no rumble.
Doesn't the Xbox Controller work with the Xbox One's RF like the older Xbox One Controllers?
I would contact PowerA's support and ask for a replacement dongle.
Man i wish i had watched this video before i spent 3 hours REPLACING the same broken ZR chip issue.
Where did u get the blue mat? Amazon?
What tools do you need to clean the controller ?
Hey vince, i watched ur video on megadrive tv connection and when i plug it in it just says no signal
I try to avoid cheap 3rd party controllers because majority don't have the amiibo capability or don't work with likes of animal crossing
amiibo isn't a big deal for me, and if you do have amiibo, your joy-con can already do that
can I send you another PowerA super mario controller to get fixed? my joystick does move but doesnt stay put
22:27 the xbox 360 Controller used this method aswell
Nice to see.
When u said that the analog hadnt been fully soldered thats the same with the xbox one powera controller
Any know where to find a faulty iPhone 13😁😅
Wete did you get that blue parts Teay parts Pad
11:47 A classic case of "If it ain't broken, don't fix it.". I was fine before, so just leave it alone!
Hey, are you from What Happens When?
The last one would have been perfect use for a cut leg of a tht capacitor. :)
Xbox 360 controllers have the same trigger setup as that aftermarket Xbox one controller
Hello there is there any way to contact you I would like to ask you to fix one of my powerA controllers i would Fix it myself but I don't have the tools to do so I understand if you don't want to help of so I would like to talk
at least it wasnt a water damaged switch!
These controller really are junk on the inside, worse than the afterglow ones I've seen in the past. No wonder there's so many broken ones on eBay!
Luckily these three are broken. Yay!
And this is why you NEVER buy cheap 3rd party controllers.
Are you talking about these controllers?? These are actually nicer then the crappy joycons that come with the switch.
@@sharkofthecovenant1647
I still have my launch day Joycons working perfectly! as 99% of the time I use my pro controller
Great fixes but seem very cheap controllers
Nice this good video controller
How can I put back the rubbers back on a switch power A enhanced controller???
Can you fix the the AXY and beat buttons on my pikachu controller
there sticky
I can not get the batter out of my power Lynel vs link controller
