I don’t know that I’d say it’s all greed from the property owner. NYC is greedy with its ever increasing property tax, insurance and water rates that property owners are forced to pay and in turn they pass it along to tenants. Rents across the board in NYC are off the charts. Not surprising why the working middle class is steadily packing up and moving out.
Nah it’s pretty much the times too. Not a lot of people go to butcher shops as in the past anymore. It’s not just the landlord but the customers base aswell that’s the problem. Cause if the people kept coming instead of going to let’s say Walmart and etc. it wouldn’t matter how much the rent was because they could afford it. Butcher shops now a days have to be in niche areas now to make decent to great money. Just sad honestly. Landlord prolly gonna turn it into something lame too.
Absolutely heartbreaking. I've been going here for 9 years and it has been a joy to have access to such high-quality food, in a charming store with a wonderful staff. People move to NYC from all over the world to have authentic experiences and enjoy small local economies supported by places like Morscher's. They are true institutions and should be protected by the city. Imagine something like this happening in Paris to a historic bakery or another food establishment? It would never happen. What a drag.
first of all, who are you to determine what "quality food" is ? we have legislation for that. we need to stop stores like that, if you want something just go to the supermarket.

Why do you need to bring differences in everything? It’s touching to see a family business crumbles because of greed. It’s human to feel for a situation like this but NO reason to bring religion, ethnicity or any differences into it.

This has nothing to do with taxes. The majority business owner and building landlord Siegfried Strahl spitefully quadrupled the rent. Herbie Morscher wanted to buy the building, but Strahl refused to sell it to him!!!!!!! That’s the real reason for the closing!

Rent for retail storefronts in queens is averaged at $44 a square foot a month right now and considering most restaurants or business places like this are around 1,800 to 3,000 square feet hes looking at about 80,000 a month in rent minimum. And if the landlord wants to triple that that means he would be paying over 240,000 a month in rent.
Tripling rent is criminal. Greed, pure greed.

One of the very last iconic places in Ridgewood. I've been going there for more than 40 years.
This should be illegal! WTH!?! Landlord can just triple their rent like this!?
Sounds like it's his own brother.
that's what i am saying too, it should be illegal for citizens to have food shops.
food shops should be state owned and state regulated.
