    That salamander is called an amphiuma. They can get quite long and have a nasty bite. People have reported needing stiches after receiving bites from it. They are also a favorite food for red-bellied mudsnakes.

    Amazing footage! That looks like a large (a fully grown one? salamander/eel/fish the bird caught!
    The salamander was struggling, but the hungry Heron managed to fully consume (alive?!) it all okay? It looked like the unlucky thing was still desperately wriggling going inside too!
    I wonder, does the large sea creature stand any chance of escaping if eaten in that condition? Maybe it can turn around inside the elastic throat/stomach and has a chance of survival here.

    • @MichelleSiefkenPhotography
      @MichelleSiefkenPhotography  Рік тому +1

      Thank you so much! It’s actually an amphiuma salamander, I’m guessing it was about 2 feet long, one of the smaller varieties. I think by the time the night heron swallowed it the salamander had passed…the whole process took nearly an hour. I don’t think there’s any chance of something once consumed escaping, or at least I havn’t seen it yet! Thanks for your interest!

      Night herons have huge, widely separated eyes which give them superior vision over a variety of natural light levels. They also have a flexible neck that can extend and widen significantly when catching prey. They will take their time making sure prey is incapacitated before swallowing whole. Birds have higher metabolic rates than humans which means they can digest faster. Herons have a flexible esophagus and a loose and stretchable stomach. They have strong digestive acids that dissolve bones that make their feces white and limey with dissolved calcium. They have a pancreas and liver that releases bile, insulin, and glucagon to aid in breaking down food and providing necessary sugars for energy.

    Great camera work! I watched a small alligator catch and eat an amphiuma at Paynes Prairie a few years ago. I had been watching some gators sunbathing on a tiny island. Then one of them jammed its jaws into the muck and hauled out a squirming aphiuma. It ate it fast because its lazy siblings woke up and moved quickly to see what it had!

    • @MichelleSiefkenPhotography
      @MichelleSiefkenPhotography  3 місяці тому +1

      Thank you so much! I had a feeling I should follow this night heron...it was so close to me and I thought that was strange to begin with, since they're so shy especially in the daytime. I was glad I had the camera running when it pulled out the debris with the amphiuma wrapped around it. At first I had no idea what it was in all that mess! How interesting that you had a similar experience with the gator. That must have been fun to watch! 😁
