It is also imperative that those struggling with depression/despondency have a safe place to be vulnerable and open, and not have that vulnerability and openness be mocked and belittled. All that will do is create more defensiveness and needless suffering at the hands of others.
It seems like the church fathers already knew the modern psychological techniques that the secular world uses. Figured it out through the greatest teacher christ, and not through an over reliance on their own mind.
... unfortunately, depression is very characterized as absence of strenght of will, ...the will of depressed person id weak, that is why they need suport and help of others, ....😢and especially prayers, and finaly exorcism...
Sadly, this is part of a general misunderstanding of mental illness and depression in Orthodoxy. We could be a hospital for the sick, but we are not for many reasons. Those of us with Bipolar Depression are 22x more likely to take our own lives. If you would actually like to learn about depression so you can share the truth with those who hear you, please contact me. I am too am Orthodox and would be happy to assist.
I’m depressed and this is good advice. I have the choice everyday to be productive but I choose not to. Don’t listen to the mental health industry over the Church
I've been thinking this too. I am a new convert. Although I find the practical life in the Church quite healing, there is a strong lack of understanding of what depression is. I certainly wouldn't categorize the illness as egoism!
@@MadsenAltamiranoI think you may have misunderstood what he means. He did classify depression as egoism. But that our sense of self pride, which we may not actually be able to notice as it is so subtle in many aspects of our life, causes depression. It is a spiritual cause that he is speaking of. It is easy to miss and misunderstand his point as it takes revelation and time to see it. It is related to self emptying. Philippians 2:1-8 "Therefore if there is any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and mercy, fulfill my joy by being like-minded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind. Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others. Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross." If one thinks himself not proud, then he is proud. As C.S Lewis said. Truly it is the most difficult illness to trace as it is within ourselves and others cannot see it. We must be honest with ourselves and God. Also the video spoke about socializing and getting up and doing things. This is very true that it is critical in getting out of oneself. And socializing meaning sincere socializing, not online nor idle talk. There are several layers to this topic that I cannot cover right now as they are woven within other topics however I just wanted to clarify that his point about egoism and pride are not wrong, they just need to be waited upon for understanding, or at least ask God to show you how it is related and why. Things don't always seem as clear as we may think when we don't understand them right away, but don't expect to understand everything immediately in its depth, lest you assume there to be no depth at all! God bless you and be with you 🙏

Partly true it's not a purely illness with mind. There are physical elements, which needs medical help
You don't have the slightest idea of what a depression can be.
