  • Save hundreds of dollars building your berkey water filter out of stainless steel stockpots. NOTE.. 1/2 HOLE WILL WORK FOR BLACK FILTERS BUT NOT FOR CERAMIC FILTERS. ceramic filters have a larger nipple tube than the black filters. I installed black filters on this one and it worked perfect.

    Best I've seen yet, Very clean and simple and I like the stainless.. It would be nice to see a glass fill level indicator incorporated.

      Ricky Parker RE: Would be nice to see a glass fill level incorporated:
      All you have to do is order one, and install it. Something like:
      Berkey SG-7.5 Glass Water Level Spigot for Big Berkey and Travel Systems
      www.amazon.com/Berkey-SG-7-5-Spigot-Travel-Systems/dp/B00BWIX0JW
      Point of this video, vs the hundreds of other videos showing DIY Berkey type gravity fed type water filter systems is that easily obtainable low cost 304 grade stainless steel pots ($26w tax) are used vs plastic buckets.
      (2 Plastic buckets cost around $15 with tax)
      For me the extra $11 spent using 304 grade Stainless Steel makes for a end product that:
      A: Looks 1,000,000 times better than (2) Plastic buckets stacked on top of each other. EG: You could put in your kitchen and use it everyday and not have to hide it when company comes over.
      (Additionally if you did have it in your kitchen and did NOT want company or prying eyes to notice it, turn pots around so spigot is hidden and it just looks like (2) pots sitting on the counter.)
      B: Takes up less vertical space.
      C: When using plastic buckets you have to use the LID, so upper bucket has something to rest on. Something else to clean, PLUS those lids once on are a PITA to remove... especially for older persons, those with less strength.
      D: Is EASY to disassemble.
      E: Can be sterilized in a autoclave if needed.
      F: SS 304 does not leach chemicals into the water.
      .

    I just made mine with the same 16Qt pots from Walmart works like a charm.... thanks man!

    BTW people when you use low cost Stainless steel pots and build your own Berkey type water filter in areas with extremely dirty water you could use a 3rd pot containing a 2nd set of filters to pre-filter, or "double filter" the water.
    (You could also build a 3rd pot with a different filter type... Cost? $13 for pot, plus whatever filters you want to install. Mix and match as needed)
    Oh, another advantage of BUILDING vs BUYING is pots are cheap and easily replaced if they get damaged, PLUS you can buy components as your budget permits, and MIX and MATCH components for various manufacturers to get the best of everything!

    So I ended up getting two pots at Wal-mart for cheap. Just drilled two holes, and added two ProPur filters (slower then Berkey, but I live in CA so cant have them shipped here). I added a red dye...seems to work so far, but slow drip while filtering. This is great if it ends up working. Now I need to find a metal spigot and drill that in. Thanks, hetcer, for this post. Solid work, bud.

    I did the same thing but used 2 white 5 gal plastic buckets and 2 ceramic filters by BRITISH BERKEFELD from ebay.
    I'll copy yours, looks so much nicer than plastic and STAINLESS too.
    Remember, the more filters you use the faster the "catch" bucket fills.

    Thank you for the brilliant idea! We found our stainless steel pots at Walmart for $16 a piece. While in the store we tried fitting different pots until we found two that fit nice and tight along the seam. We also went with a stainless steel spigot as well as four AquaCera CeraCarb filters. I had a terracotta gravity filter for many years in the 90s that took one ceramic candle. The housing began to erode over time but I really miss the taste of that water. Looking forward to this new one!

      KuroiHato69 $16 per pot sounds GREAT!
      Any chance you might still have the Walmart receipt which shows the item number, the UPC NUMBER, any chance there is any labeling on the pots you got?
      PS: How much the stainless steel spigot, where did you get the stuff?

    • @KuroiHato69
      @KuroiHato69 9 років тому

      I don't have the UPC symbol (sorry) but they were the basic Mainstay Or Bradshaw pots. (We took the labels off so I can not remember which ones we grabbed).
      The spigot came from Amazon. Search for stainless steel spigot and get one that is designed for dispensers (about $13 - $16 dollars). The Ceracarbs also came from Amazon. Search for them. We are SO happy with our unit and it is being used daily! I wish you all the best!.

    • @maitlandmoore6426

      There is , you have to find glass containers or any combo , as long as the lower one can support the upper , fabricate a lid or ? Where they join. But first get your self a glass bit , 50 bucks or so for your drill and drill the lower jar ? Be very careful , maybe have someone who's drilled glass before do that part . Its doable

    I was looking to build one with pots that fit as well . But after watching this I've changed my mind ,
    The reason is if you use the sit on the lid system you ( like shingles ) can keep contaminates out of your drink , but just sitting them together it seams condensation and ? That accumulates on the outer upper will / possibly drip into the inner lower , especially when you separate them . I think now the lid can capture that and can be cleaned beforehand . What do you think .

    I made this same system about two years ago. The problem is the aluminum rivets leach into your water which is way toxic.

    • @jurchix
      @jurchix 10 років тому

      How about stainless steel stock pots? Or do you better recommend plastic PP(5) containers instead of aluminium/stainless steel stock pots?

    • @WeAreNotAlone69
      @WeAreNotAlone69 9 років тому +1

      Onsen I cannot see the exact timestamps of Mowmanslawncare's posts but he is saying he drilled out the aluminum rivets that were being used on the stainless steel pots he used as he was concerned about aluminum leaching into the water. I don't see this being a problem unless you are filling the pan too much. As a work-around consider getting a spigot which has a water level indicator and keeping the level below level of the rivets.
      One thing I see as being a potential problem in using stainless screws is how to seal them, if anything I'd prefer SS rivets but the problem there is I would assume they are made out of alot harder material than aluminum rivets so you really have to wack them to get them to compress, and they probably ARE prone to leakage more so than aluminum rivets.
      ***************
      Below pans nest perfectly.
      Rivets are aluminum
      Pan/lid are .55mm 300 series (non-magnetic) which is good because it's made for long term contact with water / rusts very slowly.
      *SS does rust btw.
      300 series /304 is what is advertised as "Food /Surgical Grade IIRC

    I found these same two stainless steel thin gauge 16qt stock pots at Walmart for something like $6.98/ea. I then ordered for the top section 2/ea KX MATRIKX Whole House Pb1, 10" Length (9.75" Actual), Extruded Carbon Block 0.5 micron Water Filter Cartridges, 06-250-125-975 for $17/ea - smallest particulate filter I could find. Then ordered for the bottom section Berkey PF-2 Fluoride / Arsenic Filter (Set of 2) for $48 & a spicket for $6.88 on ebay saving $172 vs Berkey. Add UV to kill bacteria.

    Did you use the 1/2 inch bit to drill an opening for your spigot also? Where did you get your spigot? (people mentioned that the plastic spigot that comes with the full (expensive) Berkey looked pretty cheap... one person said it looked like it had come from a dollar store, ha.
    Thanks for your video; really helpful. Clean water is crucially important. I'm in school, and funds are really tight, so this could be a more fiscally responsible option.

    • @chord972

      The Berkey spigot is EXTREMELY cheap. Mine leaked water onto the floor! Berkey was very poor in responding to my complaint, and only after posting repeatedly on various survival forums, did I get a quality Berkey replacement sent to me! My opinion is that Berkey tanks are completely overpriced and I support making your own tanks to use with the Berkey filters.

      Julie Martin I just made mine last week with the black filters. More expensive but you get what you pay for. Just get 2 filters and fill it at night. Missy Rabbit You will note the filters are laying on the table in the video. After drilling the holes you unscrew plastic retaining nut on threaded stub on bottom of filter, stick the filter thru the hole and "GENTLY" hand tighten.
      (I've read that the threaded stub will break if tightened down excessively.)
      Spigot is installed in similar fashion...
